[U2] [UV] Assignable SYSTEM() functions

2007-04-17 Thread Ray Wurlod
Has anyone compiled a list of SYSTEM() functions in UniVerse to which one can
ASSIGN a value of 1 or 0 to enable/disable particular functionality? I'm
looking at avoiding reinventing the wheel more than anything here. But if this
looks like a request for a list of undocumented options, then so be it.

Here are a few other ASSIGN settings that might be useable? All the
others
are for QA debugging purposes.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(1) sets number printer channel active. Like
PRINT ON number, i.e.
  ASSIGN 5 TO SYSTEM(1) ; * set to printer chn5
PRINT THIS GOES TO PRINTER CHANNEL 5
PRINT AS IF I DID A 'PRINT ON 5'
ASSIGN -1 TO SYSTEM(1); *set back to crt display
  PRINT BACK on TERMINAL

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(225) changes current USERNO to number.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(1008) changes current printer channel width to
number. Use in conjunction with SYSTEM(1) to set current printer
channel.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(1009) changes current printer channel depth to
number. Use in conjunction with SYSTEM(1) to set current printer
channel.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(1010) changes current printer channel top margin
to
number. Use in conjunction with SYSTEM(1) to set current printer
channel.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(1011) changes current printer channel bottom
margin
to number. Use in conjunction with SYSTEM(1) to set current printer
channel.

ASSIGN 1 (or 0) TO SYSTEM(1017) changes how Type1/Type19 records are
read/written. Setting to 0 will result in all LF chars converted to @FM
chars on reads, and @FM chars to LF chars on writes. Setting to 1 will
result in no conversion, so reads and writes will retain LF chars.

ASSIGN number TO SYSTEM(2101) results in a LIST.READU display.

At 06:45 PM 10/30/01, you wrote:

One that IS documented is the ability to assign to SYSTEM(3001) through
SYSTEM(3005) to fire counters for the Windows NT performance monuitor.

You turn off ssh through the services function. Which unix are you using? If
you don't mind, why would you want to turn off ssh? As far as sendmail being
used by Datatel you will have to ask them or someone a little more

Re: Spam:Re: [U2] RE: [U2C] U2 / Cache

2007-04-17 Thread Jerry

Dawn,
One thing I don't think you mentioned is the file structure. Tell me if I'm
wrong. The file structure is not like U2 at all. Unlike U2, and all other
PICK environments, which have separate files for each table, Cache has one
file that contains all of you tables. The one big problem with this file
arrangement is that if you get a broken table your whole database is broken.
You can either scrap the whole thing for a backup, which means all of your
tables are old or you can attempt to fix the broken table which may or may
not work. The file that contains all of your tables is not dynamically
resized either. You have to keep a close eye on how much room you are taking
up in this file (MUMPS.DAT). Because, when you run out of room for data you
have to allocate more room to increase the size of your file, otherwise you
hit a wall and your apps stop working. Because of this file structure you
also have a problem with maximum file size due to operating system
constraints.
We have an OpenM system here which is the forerunner of Cache and that is
the experience I have had with it. Once we ran out of space in the file and
everything stopped working. We had to call and have the allocated space
increased just to get in and cleanup logs and statistics tables that were
growing. I have to constantly keep an eye on the file space to make sure we
don't hit the limit and remove older statistics when it looks like we are
running short. I have batch processes that prune the log files for anything
over two weeks old. One time we hit, what I think, was a bad spot on the
disk within the allocated space. This broke one of the tables. Luckily for
us the table that got broken was one that wasn't used often and when
Intersystems (or it may have been Ontario Systems, our VAR) dialed in to fix
the file they were able to link to a backup we had to recover the data that
got damaged after they fixed the broken table. The only other alternative
would have been to bring back a backup which would mean we would have lost
statistics for the time period between.

/sbin/service sshd stop will stop the sshd service. To stop it auto
starting on reboot it depends on perhaps what rellevel you are running on
and how it was started originally etc

you can just remove the link from /etc/rc{rellevel}.d The link will be
something like s55sshd
Or you can use your menus in the X gui to do it.
If you have it started in your rc.local (/etc/rc.d/rc.local) you can delete
the line out of there that starts it.

First, turning ssh off will depend on your OS. If it's Linux (Redhat
specifically) run:

service sshd stop

though why ssh would be turned off, I can't imagine. If you are having
trouble with attempted hacks, download sshblack and get it running.

sendmail is an MTA. mail is a client. They are not the same thing. To find
out what mail server is being used, do:

telnet host.ip.add.ress 25

and it will 'answer' with the name of the server, unless some 'wise' IT
person has modified the answer-back string so it's 'generic'.

Now, if your system is AIX, then you would need to use:

stopsrc -s sendmail

if you have verified whether sendmail is the MTA (mail transport agent).

Hi Jerry -- I started responding and decided I wasn't certain about
some points so I passed your question along. I will get back to you on
this when I get a response. What I do know is that the file structures
look the same to any application software, but different to the OS.

I can also pass along that I talked to several people and it
definitely seems to be true that there are even fewer hours spent in
sys admin each month with the approach they have, as there is no file
resizing and the like to be done. I asked many questions of both the
vendor and their customers and did not hear about the apps hitting a
wall, so I'll see if I can find out about that. Thanks. --dawn

You might try asking Anita Panda of your own organization. Or do as was
suggested to her, read the documentation on IBM's web site, take a

[U2] [U2C] U2 / Cache

2007-04-17 Thread Jerry

Dawn,
I will elaborate a little more. Unless they have changed their file
structures from the OpenM system this is what you will have. When you log
into their environment you will have all of the tables and program files and
they may look the same as working within the MV environment. But from the
operating system side looking at the file system you have one file that is
humongous with a few log files outside of it. This one file, in our case
it's MUMPS.DAT, is where all of those tables are and where you have logged
into. It makes it convenient to back up, just back up the one file. However,
the problem comes if you have a broken table (UV file). Let's say in UV you
have a customer file, a client file, a vendor file, a parts file, and a wip
file. If your customer file becomes corrupted in U2 a quick fix would be to
rename the file from the operating system side to CUSTOMER.BAD and load the
customer file from your last backup then enter any new customers since the
backup. You're back in business. With Cache if the customer table becomes
corrupted you can't just change the name of the table from the operating
system side because it is in this black box. There may be ways from inside
that box to load that one table but I am not at that level of guru on Cache.
If one of the program files was damaged or if I didn't have the knowledge to
reload the individual tables I would have to wait and rely on Intersystems
to fix the problem. In any case there is a possibility I would have to
rename the black box and reload the whole thing from backup. Then I would
have to re-enter all of the Clients, customers, vendors, parts, and wip's
since the last backup. Then close out any work-in-progress (wips) that had
been completed. Only then could I let the users back on the system.

Thanks. --dawn

I'm

wrong. The file structure is not like U2 at all. Unlike U2, and all other
PICK environments, which have separate files for each table, Cache has
one

file that contains all of you tables. The one big problem with this file
arrangement is that if you get a broken table your whole database is
broken.
You can either scrap the whole thing for a backup, which means all of
your
tables are old or you can attempt to fix the broken table which may or
may

not work. The file that contains all of your tables is not dynamically
resized either. You have to keep a close eye on how much room you are
taking
up in this file (MUMPS.DAT). Because, when you run out of room for data
you
have to allocate more room to increase the size of your file, otherwise
you

hit a wall and your apps stop working. Because of this file structure you
also have a problem with maximum file size due to operating system
constraints.
We have an OpenM system here which is the forerunner of Cache and that is
the experience I have had with it. Once we ran out of space in the file
and

everything stopped working. We had to call and have the allocated space
increased just to get in and cleanup logs and statistics tables that were
growing. I have to constantly keep an eye on the file space to make sure
we

don't hit the limit and remove older statistics when it looks like we are
running short. I have batch processes that prune the log files for
anything

over two weeks old. One time we hit, what I think, was a bad spot on the
disk within the allocated space. This broke one of the tables. Luckily
for

us the table that got broken was one that wasn't used often and when
Intersystems (or it may have been Ontario Systems, our VAR) dialed in to
fix
the file they were able to link to a backup we had to recover the data
that

got damaged after they fixed the broken table. The only other alternative
would have been to bring back a backup which would mean we would have
lost

statistics for the time period between.

RE: [U2] [U2C] U2 / Cache

2007-04-17 Thread Tony Gravagno
Jerry and others, I've been hesitent to respond here because I'll just be
duplicating material in my blog and from my series of articles in Spectrum
Magazine on all of these business and technical topics. I will say that
you need to consider that Cache' revenue is almost equally split between
new licenses and support fees. For a company with over $200 Million in
annual revenue, this means InterSystems has a lot of happy clients and
they're constantly getting more. I think it's reasonable to assume that
file management is at least adequate if not entirely stable, considering
the number of sites using this software and the high-profile nature of
these sites, including U.S Veteran's Administration, Department of Defense,
and critical healthcare and government agencies all over the world. The
database hasn't been hit by a GFE-type error in years. It simply works,
and doesn't require constant tuning. Our personal familiarity with such
things prompts the reasonable questions, but in that world the issues just
don't exist.

There are essentially two file structures, the traditional Globals, and the
MV files which are Globals too, just structured like dynamic arrays. MV
accounts in Cache' have files just like U2, in-line files and DIR files
(type 19). There is reportedly no performance lost in working with MV
files vs globals.

Someone expressed the sentiment that what's old is new, etc. Cache' is
built on generations of MUMPS like Universe and Unidata are built on their
predecessors. Considering the very similar histories of these products, it
will be very difficult for MV people to stick their noses up at Cache'
heritage. What should be more important to decision makers than heritage
is that the DBMS works very well and is supported by a very large and well
organized company. For all of the reasons why people use U2, they should
also seek to understand Cache'. I'm not even talking about migrations
necessarily. In today's world of SOA (big on the IBM agenda) a U2 site
that can integrate with Cache' has a definite advantage over a site that
does not, whether via Java, .NET, Web Services, SOA, or by other means.
For business reasons anyone integrating with a site (or trading partner or
business prospect) that already has Cache' should understand it - and it's
just a bonus that MV code works in Cache' itself.

Yes, that was my reply -- that I thought that the app that does or
will manage all such calls is UniVerse. I do not recall the exact
response, but my impression, which could very well be wrong, is that
it is UniVerse and it is going to be Cache'. I would like to know the
actual situation on this, however. It just seems like a terribly poor
business decision for IBM to write a new application with a database
product from another company when they want to claim that they have
the best solutions (or perhaps that is not their claim?) But if it
really is the case that IBM will be writing new software with Cache',
then I will say that I understand why. I had to evaluate database and
tool solutions for my own project and I came to the conclusion that I
would use Cache'. Maybe IBM and I think alike afterall ;-) I gotta
think that such a decision by IBM could have implications for getting
more resources to the U2 group to add the types of features and
quality benchmarks (24/7 approach, for example) to the own products so
that at some point perhaps they can migrate back to U2??? Or do I
have this story completely wrong? Inquiring minds...

Kind of you to share your investigation with the group.

This give us lots to think about, when the time comes.

Please note that I really wanted U2 to be the right answer as I do not
dismiss loyalty from project requirements easily. But for the sake of
my company, the case was too compelling and I felt I had to choose
Cache' over U2. It wasn't ONLY that I like to attend a lively
conference with folks working with the same technology platform ;-)

All the best for your new venture.

Below is what my sales engineer said when I asked him this question:

quote
There are a couple of assumptions about this premise. The fact that the
multiple files is some how more reliable has the major flaw that you
are reliant upon the Operating System for database integrity. This is
seen by the assertion that things DO break i.e. the very construct of
broken table as a common concept indicates this problem. We have
addressed this fundamental problem by decades of constant improvement to
the foot printing portion of our engine. With us tables don't break.
And for the unbelieving among us, we have backups, AND we have the
ability to export any sub-set. When anything DOES break, you will ALWAYS
be at the mercy of the 'last back up'. We go to great lengths to make
the database integrity something that you CAN place peoples lives on
(and almost 80% of all clinical data in the US DOES just that!) Can
things become corrupt, certainly they can, just as the file structure at
the OS level can become corrupt. Storage hardware CAN fail. Multiple
files does not lessen this at all, and the pay back in both performance
and reliability that comes from putting the entire foot printing under
our control more than (in our opinion) out weighs the perceived 'risk'.
This is really just a mind set shift that needs to happen.
/quote

He then makes a comment about whether one has more faith in the OS or
the DB in the MV world. In the next info, the term global is what
we would call a file.

quote
For me, I have more faith in Cache then the OS'es we
run on (and btw, both Cache OS faith is VERY HIGH). Plus with what we
call Subscript Level Mapping you CAN put separate globals (or subsets
of global values) into different databases (CACHE.DAT files) all
mapped to the same Namespace. So, in MV terms, Each Account CAN in fact
have multiple OS level footprints. We don't default to doing that, since
there is admin. to setup and manage the mappings, and we don't force the
assumption of WHICH globals or global sub scripted value ranges make
sense to have separated. So in practice, you have MORE flexibility than
the MV model of a file HAS to be in a single file. We default to
everything, but offer a finer granularity, should a data layout dictate
that it makes sense to break things out, therefore this is a non issue.

Our disk footprint IS allocated more space as needed dynamically, but we
do NOT reduce (dynamically) the footprint. Once we have the image on
disk, we only reduce that through an overt compact process (should it
ever be needed). If you DO fill up, then YES we will (to keep from
corrupting the footprint) halt. But monitoring how much space is being
used is just common sense for a DBA. As for the maximum disk file size,
YES each OS'es file structure does have an upper limit per file. But
since the Namespaces can point to multiple CACHE.DAT files (I haven't
seen them referred to as MUMPS.DAT files for decades)...the maximum
live data set
can be be HUGE!!! At 32TB per database and 16k of subscript level
mappings possible, the upper limit is 576,460,752,303,423,488 bytes of
live data (1/2 Exabyte)

RE: Spam:Re: [U2] RE: [U2C] U2 / Cache

2007-04-17 Thread David Jordan
One thing to be careful with Cache is that it does not have the same
transaction processing as U2. With U2 modifications made in a transaction
block are not visible to other users until commit, as I have been advised in
Cache those modifications are immediately visible to other users.

Re: [U2] Multivalue Column

2007-04-17 Thread Dawn Wolthuis

Laughing.

Yes, you get columns in tables where there are rows, but attributes or
fields in files with records or items. A multi-valued column is a
mixture of terms. On the other hand, a multivalue column could be a
multi-valued attribute (let's call it MVATTR) in an sql-ized file in
U2 (we will call it THIS) against which one can write SELECT MVATTR
FROM THIS; --dawn

Hi,

Suppose, I have a multivalue column. How can I get the sum of all
the values ? If I want to create an array of the elements present in the
multivalue column, then how can I do it ? Please give me some examples.

Thanks,
Sanjeeb

Re: [U2] [U2C] U2 / Cache

2007-04-17 Thread Dawn Wolthuis

Dawn,
I will elaborate a little more. Unless they have changed their file
structures from the OpenM system this is what you will have. When you log
into their environment you will have all of the tables and program files and
they may look the same as working within the MV environment. But from the
operating system side looking at the file system you have one file that is
humongous with a few log files outside of it.

Yes, I think that is the case as the default, and you can make changes
to have a many to many relationship between OS files and Pick files.

This one file, in our case
it's MUMPS.DAT, is where all of those tables are and where you have logged
into.

I think that what is different is that InterSystems has made
significant enhancements to their product, to reliability and
scalability as well as features like AJAX, in the past decade or so,
with many of these enhancements now available to Pick folks too. I
have not seen another MV implementation put the time, money, and
creativity into their products, giving them the same level of uptime,
scalability and features that Cache' has. I don't need to be their
sales arm here, and I am working with my
before-I-do-real-things-with-it information, so you might want to ask
me again in a half year or so.

I did ask around regarding supporting the sys admin and their
customers don't seem to think about broken files at all. Their 24/7
support desk sounds like it is top notch from the standpoint of
customers.

I gather that you would instead restore a namespace and then
potentially apply the transactions that were entered since that time.
This would keep the referential integrity too. They explained how
their backups work to backup the database while it is running. It is
really very impressive. I don't think I was the only one who made an
audible wow type of sound after hearing the specifics from the tech
folks. If you are interested, I'm sure they would be more than happy
to chat with you about it. If you want to write up a specific
question, I can pass it along.

I am not so smitten that I think that everything will be honkey dory,
however (am I sounding like an old lady or what?!), as I'm certain
there will be plenty of why did they do it like that moments as we
get into the details. But I'm very impressed so far. Cheers! --dawn

Thanks. --dawn

 one
file that contains all of you tables. The one big problem with this file
arrangement is that if you get a broken table your whole database is

I'm pretty sure you are right about that, David. We had them explain

If there's anyone in the longitudes who is usually in the middle of REM

I'd be happier with anytime from 07:00 - 22:00 Aus EST (21:00 - 12:00
