another name change is going to create additional challenges, but, Susie and

Re: [U2] Change is a coming!

2009-09-15 Thread David Jordan
This company provides OEM software to IBM. This does not mean IBM won't
continue to sell U2, this is still to be explained. In this crisis companies
like IBM are looking to focus on their core business and U2 is a different
beast. This does not mean its good or bad, just different to everything else
they are doing, hence I would see this as a strategic move rather than a sell
off.

I would not take the view that Rocket is just sustaining technology, they have
modern products and are developing new technology. They don't seem to have a
list of old solutions.

What I would say to management at the moment, is that they are more secure than
most other platforms with a guaranteed path of continuity. There are several
mv vendors out there who are successful and growing. It is not as big a task
to move mv platforms as it is with RDBMs. The mv market is a vibrant market,
well established in banking, distribution, ERP and MRP with leading companies.
U2 business has still been growing double digits for many years now.

IBM was great for brand name, but it was restrictive for U2. Rocket does not
have the branding, but it will be more dynamic. Any organisation, has one
focus and that is to make money. If Susie puts a business case and shows a
return, then Rocket will pursue and develop the business.

Informix and IBM never bought U2 as a product, it came with the baggage.
Rocket has made a strategic decision to buy U2.

Whilst being cautious, it is too early to say that this is negative and there
are reasons for optimism. Like anything in life, it is what we make of it.
Informix and IBM were both staggered at the passion of the U2 community, and if
we present this to Rocket, they will be too.

So at the moment, I have cautious optimism to the future of U2 and as a user
group we can hopefully make it successful.

Regards

David Jordan

Re: [U2] U2 being sold!

2009-09-15 Thread Dawn Wolthuis
I, too, wish the best for the U2 team in their move to this new
company. Some of these folks in Denver were part of Unidata, then
Ardent, then Informix, then IBM and now Rocket Software in the span of
13 years or so (not looking it up right now). That is a different way
of changing what company you work for than going the route of having
to switch desks too.

While I don't know enough about Rocket Software to have an idea
whether this will be good for the future of U2, just seeing IMS
mentioned on their web site, gives me pause. While I have fond
memories of my time spent working on IMS CICS COBOL apps, that is not
software that gets enhanced. Your (Tony's) impression on that point is
similar to mine. Is this a move for U2 to thrive or more related to
survival than growth?

I can't help but feel like I dodged a bullet on this one with my
emerging software company, but have colleagues and an occasional
client using U2 so I still keep a toe in this world and care where U2
heads. When weighing platforms earlier, the biggest plus that U2 had
for me was that it was IBM (also that I knew and liked it and did feel
some loyalty). I went with Cache' for features (AJAX integration with
MV with no php, java or other middleware required, for example),
however. I imagine there are folks who stuck with or moved to U2
because of IBM. I am feeling their pain in this.

This new company has grown from 200 to 700 employees quickly, it
appears, through acquisitions, if I am reading things right. I am very
curious what their interest is in U2. I look forward to hearing what
Chuck and others find out after scheduling a call with them.

Although I am not working with U2 regularly anymore, I sure hope that
Rocket Software can assure U2 customers that they will not do to U2
what Raining Data did to D3. --dawn

Dear IBM U2 Database and Tools Valued Customer,

IBM today announced plans to sell IBM's WW U2 Data Servers and Tools
assets to Rocket Software. As a global software development company,
Rocket Software's R&D platform will enable us to better focus our
efforts on developing U2 products that help you grow your business. As
valued customers, you understand that our dynamic data record store, Web
services capabilities and low total cost of ownership make UniVerse and
UniData the right products for building flexible solutions that can
capture new markets.
This change in ownership is intended to benefit U2 products, customers
and business partners and will not affect your current relationship with
the U2 business. We will strive to make the change as seamless as
possible. I will continue to lead the business with my existing
management team.
The people with whom you have been working will continue to be your
primary contacts. The number you call for Product Support remains the
same. No pricing changes are planned, our email will continue to work
until we move to a new company network, and we will make sure you know
how to contact us throughout that process. Most importantly, the
development team will remain focused on the existing product delivery
schedule.
We will provide you with as much information as possible as the
transition progresses. Many of you have been our customers since the
days of Unidata and Vmark, and have seen the succession through Ardent,
Informix and IBM. We look forward to continuing our strong relationship
with you as our new company extends our reputation as the best software
infrastructure provider for easily customizable, high transaction, zero
administration web applications.
Thank you for your continued use of UniData or UniVerse. It's going to
be an exciting time for our current and future customers!
Sincerely,

I'm banging my cup against the bar for what Tony just said about Susie and her
team, Here here !!

They've done a dang good job over the years, given the ball field they had to
play in.

The best news we've heard in all this is that she and her team are staying on.

We have to also say that the product offering is still strong as any MV
offering out there. None of these things have changed.

Maybe the U2UG will have to bring to fruition the plans already laid to
increase market share and name recognition, like the learner packs, and
incubator projects.

Maybe we've each 'come to the kingdom for such a time as this'. We may not
like some of the aspects of this, but we can each help shape the outcome.

One thing Rocket probably hasn't ever experienced in all their acquisitions - a
user community like this one. I trust they will come to understand that this
is one of the greatest of the U2 assets they acquired in the deal. We know the
U2/MV story, and we have each been telling it longer than IBM. We will teach
it to Rocket.

Thanks. Have a great day,
-Baker Hughes

That's not a trivial point. Of the companies who have bought
into U2 or stuck with the databases through their adventuresome
history, I'd say a significant percentage have this platform
rather than an MV competitor's because of the branding rather
than the feature set. I'm sure most companies will stick with
the platform to avoid the pain of migration, but some soul
searching is in order for those who like to associate themselves
with large and stable names.

I've always felt the perception of the significance of IBM
branding has been much higher than the actual benefits derived.
That is - it would have been nice if IBM were as good a business
partner to U2 VARs and end-users as they are to their DB2
channel. It seems U2 vendors (and end-user IT people who have to
sell their technology choices to their upper management) have
continued to play the Big Blue card, even though at times it
seems IBM Corporate was unaware that these databases even
existed. This could be an opportunity for some market expansion
with a more flexible and nurturing vendor/partner. But I'll say
up front that the profile of Rocket Software fits the "acquire

Maybe it's cultural thing and it'll go down fine in the USA, but I think

On the other hand, maybe we'll get more emphasis on integration with

Hi

Having had a chat with a U2 IBMer, I am very excited at the possibilities for
growth, of both the products and the market, under this new
structure/ownership. IBM never gave U2 the recognition it warranted and the
policies made it difficult for the U2 team and customers to forge forward in
the way they wanted. I feel we need to give this the backing it deserves as it
still has the same team driving it, just with more freedom and scope to grow.

Thanks, my 2 cents worth.

This could bode well for Susie and her group if they are given more latitude to

Looking at their website, from the number of offices that Rocket has, it
looks like they grant some autonomy to the Product/Groups they purchase.

This could bode well for Susie and her group if they are given more
latitude to do what they need to 'to build a better rocket'.

Re: [U2] U2 being sold! {Unclassified}

2009-09-15 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
You can indeed say you now have "a Rocket in your Pocket"

And I'm afraid that this rather exactly illustrates the damage to the
products' image that will be done, or has already been done, by this
disposal.

How can anyone take a firm called "Rocket Software" seriously*?
Sorry, but for me it's instant Zero Credibility for a DBMS vendor.
Maybe it's cultural thing and it'll go down fine in the USA, but I think
it'll go down like a 'cup of cold sick' in the UK & AUS / NZ / RSA
markets

On the other hand, maybe we'll get more emphasis on integration with
mainstream (= Microsoft) products and less on IBM. For example
* MSMQ instead of MQSeries for reliable message handling,
* SQL Server for EDA instead of DB2,
* Windows Server 2008 the first and principal port of a release,
then Linux, then AIX & other niche O/Ses?

Regards

Mike

* OK, I'll concede it might be an acceptable name for a missile guidance
software company, but this ain't them

Works under UD 5.1. Can't speak for UV. I will say that CONCURRENT is
INCREDIBLY slow, e.g. 30 minutes vs. 10+ hours in one test I ran. YMMV

[U2] [UV] BUILD.INDEX CONCURRENT trustworthy? (was: Indexing)

2009-09-15 Thread Charles Stevenson

Are there any testimonials from anyone using it in production?
We're like a flock of penguins waiting for the hungriest one to dive in
first and not get eaten by seals.
If there's no blood in the water, CONCURRENT is a welcome tool for high
availability.

It's not IBM technical documentation, but several years ago I published a

an article for the OSDA Newsletter. The prose is dated, but the techniques
aren't. It's at: http://www.rossmorrissey.com/uv/rossmorrissey_indexes.pdf
