Interesting thread. Even though I don't really have much to do with
UniVerse these days, I still enjoy reading (and learning from) these
forums.
I've been a long time user of both UniVerse and SQL Server. Developed
many things using one, the other or both db's as data sources. I
would say
I've used vmware for development work and as a means of converting
data from one system to another. Works very well if you run it on a
machine with dual core's, adequate memory and more than one hard
drive. Works best if you can put the vm's files onto their own hard
drive.

Sounds alot like the current system I'm working on. It's Informix
compiled down to c++ and then run on a sql 2005 server. The front end
is done in vb6 and the web servers are a patchwork of asp and vb.net
and c#.net.

This guy wants low cost equipment. If they have been running on a 486
box up until now, speed is certainly not an issue. I'd suggest
browsing ebay for a 1-2 year old dual core server or workstation.
You'd be surprised at how cheap they are once they come off lease.
I do this myself every

Best way to quickly test/fix this is to login to the account at the
TCL level. If you get the offer to make the directory a UniVerse
directory, then those files were missing and responding to the offer
will fix things up with the default set of files.

If it's speed you want, go with a text file dump of the data and then
an SQL bulk insert job. I did much the same thing (though with fewer
records) and improved performance dramatically. Sometimes the good
old tools really are better.

I use MS Reporting Services, but I put a subset of what I want to
report on into a SQL server first. Using the good old fashined method
of pumping ginormous text files accross our network. This keeps the
locals from abusing our accounting system during the day.

Micro$oft (you will be assimilated!) does this the right way. You can
download a copy of Visual Studio 2005 (free) which comes with a
personal version of SQL server 2005 (free). Applications built with
this can also be distributed (free).
Hard to compete with that.

I've found it's a lot simpler to just manually create an ADO.NET data
structure and then populate it myself with UO.NET. I have to type a
little more (perhaps not much more than if I were to use XML) but I
get exactly what I want.
I have a couple of examples if you'd like to take a look.

I can't confime anything with xml stuff! I started using .Net when it
first came out. There were no xml functions at that time. So, I've
always just done it the hard way. I'm fortunate to have full access
to both ends of the process though so it's not so bad.

With a multiprocessor box (dual core Opteron's, Yes!) you can set SQL
Server to use only a set number of the processors for itself. The OS
and UniVerse would then share the remaining. Aside from that and
tossing lots of memory and disk into the box you should be OK.

I'm attempting to make use of a program called mpack which requires
some command line arguments to be quoted. While doing this, I'm
getting some over quoting and things are not worked as they should.
Is there another character or technique (aside from writing the
command out as a script and
mpack is a neat little utility that will encode an attachement, add a
subject line and then mail the whole lot off to your smtp server.
With some help from the others on this thread, I've been able to rip
out 80+ lines of code and replace it all with a dozen or so lines.
And, it works with

You can also use the full path to the account instead of the account
name. I usually put the full path in for the account name.

One of my hits here is an application that can extract the contents
of an invoice from our U2 system and produce as an Excel spreadsheet
with multiple tabs. The main users of this appliation are our billing
and collections staff. They love being able to send a client the
spreadsheet
We hit an issue with CR 8.5. We found there werer times when the
changes to a crystal report could not be saved. Loading the latest
series of fixpacks from the crystal reports support page fixed this
problem.

found that it's much faster to use bulk loading from DTS (or a stored
procedure). Here's a sample of code (without the DTS part which is

the letdown of running a large query against their spanking new uber

I've seen similar issues with Dynamic Connect and Wintegrate when
running them on XP machines that also have the microsoft spyware
scanner. It usually works, but every so often the spyware gums up the
works and then DC or Wintegrate simply don't startup. You get the
splash screen and that's it.
Take a look at SFU 3.5 and rsync. Your copy job will run a bit
faster. SFU is Micro$ofts repackage of some unix utilities for
windows.

life as an Ultimate application. Since that is all I've ever seen in

serial or parralell interfaces). This would allow the spooler to
know much more about the status of a job than the more modern
printers that are network attached (and deal with complete print jobs
in one fell swoop). For a
HP-UX has some examples on how to integrate their ldap with Micro$ofts

This all seemed to coincide with my screwing about with pam.conf so I
suspect in my case it's self inflicted. Until I get a chance to sort

We run our UniVerse application on HP-UX, but we use a number of sql
servers running on X86 type hardware.
Our standard setup for a database server (Micro$oft SQL for us) calls
for a dual processor machine with at least a gig of memory depending
upon the size and number of users.

I've used a 2 user licensed (NOT pe) UniVerse 10.1 on Gentoo, Redhat
and SuSE 8.2 during my testing. As others have said, I've found it
works just fine with just about any linux distro out there. I'm also
betting that IBM would support it on most any of the mainstream
distros as most of them
with the ability to trash the integrity of the
organization's financial information; a rude awakening awaits!

I'm going through this right now. I changed my password on an HP-UX
system and uniobjects stopped working for me. I created a test
account and it works with that, it also works with the other users on
the system.
My original login still works with the new password. Sort of seems

are no firewalls between you and it that also block this port. On an
HP-UX machine this is port 31438. Have a look at the services file in
/etc and make sure this line is in there somewhere.

program to run much faster, simply putting the select list into a loop and
reading one record at a time runs noticeably slower. I didn't have this
