Re: [U2] [UV] Is anyone up on UV 11.2 ?

2014-01-28 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
We just discovered that connecting to secure web services (https://) that are
using SSL certificates with the SHA-2 hash algorithms will require the new
crypto libraries that are provided with UniVerse 11.2.

There are also new licensing options in 11.2 that will help us in certain
situations.

Because of this, we are working out our upgrade path to 11.2 for development
and testing, then finally releasing it to customers.

Hi friends,

Its time to rev a few UV instances here and I wanted to ask if anyone is
running on UniVerse 11.2.x ??

If so, what can you share?

If you considered it but decided to stay with 11.1.14 or something around
there, why? Any issues that are yet to get worked out?

What ARE you waiting for -- is there some enhancement that you've heard is
about to be released, or something patched that you feel is essential?

Thanks, from [unusually] cold Texas (yet not as cold as Chicago).

[U2] UniVerse Training

Does anyone know if the UniVerse internals class is being offered anymore? It
something that I've always wanted to attend, but I was never able to get
approved. I think I can get it approved now, but it seems like the course
isn't being taught anymore. If it's not available, is there any option to get
the course materials? I've tried reaching out to

gotten any response.

On a somewhat similar topic, does anyone know anything about U2 UniVersity?
The information on their web page (http://www.rocketsoftware.com/u2-university)

Well, I'd like this to run from a Universe server, running on either

RE: [U2][UV] Up casing Login IDs {unclassified}

2007-08-27 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Have you tried looking at the way your username is stored in windows.
The easiest way I know to do this is run the "net user" command from
windows, or "net user /domain" if it's a domain login. All of our
network logins are in lower case, as is the same for most of our
customers. We did have one customer that entered their logins in mixed
case. Apparently, windows is case-insensitive when checking to see if
the login is valid, but when it returns the login to Universe, it
returns it in the original case that was entered, which for that
customer was mixed. UV.LOGINS would not work as we had expected.
Ultimately, checking "net user" showed that they were in mixed case.
The way that I knew of to clean this up was to delete and recreate the
login in windows, or possibly rename the user. Once the user is fixed
in windows, give Universe a reboot to clear it's user cache and it
should be fixed.

Good luck.

Subject: RE: [U2][UV] Up casing Login IDs {unclassified}

Thanks Dave,

I tried it out but, unfortunately, the problem is occurring before the
UV LOGIN voc is invoked. And, to add insult to injury, it is only
happening to my login ID, not to the login ID of anyone else who has
access to the server.

If their UV.LOGINS record is AUSER10, they can enter any case
combination they like (AuSEr10) and UV passes AUSER10 to the UV.LOGINS
file. I use any case combination of my user ID and UV passes asuer14 to
the UV.LOGINS file. Somehow UV knows to upcase all telnet login IDs
except mine.

I suspect it may be because I installed something whilst logged onto the
server as myself, rather than as administrator. However, I did install
UV itself as administrator so it's not that. Possibly UVDK? However, I
have installed UV & UVDK on dozens of servers (Unix and Windows) and
have never had this occur before.

Also, I would rather not maintain separately formatted records for
myself throughout the DB. It would have further consequences in the
management of my records on what is the main payroll database.

Has anyone else encountered this problem before?

Cheers,

Andy

RE: [U2] UV install - internal vs. external

2007-07-06 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
There are files at the root filesystem: /.uvhome /.unishared /.uvdlls
The spooler typically installs into: /usr/spool/uv
The spooler area could be moved elsewhere if you modify
/uvconfig

I think that might be it, including the files that start UV
(/etc/inittab) or /etc/init.d depending on your release.

Subject: [U2] UV install - internal vs. external

As part of our DR configuration, our database is loaded on an external
RAID
array. We have the ability, should one server crash, to present the
disks to
other servers and be back up and running.

The question has arisen as to
whether we should do the same with UV itself.
Currently, it is loaded on an
internal drive, and therefore has to be loaded
on any failover machine. If
we load it on an external drive, we would be
able to present that disk to a
failover machine along with the database.
This would also allow us to only
have to do UV maintenance updates, mods,
etc.) in one place and not have to
worry about keeping multiple servers in
synch.

The down side is that it
appears that when UV installs, it doesn't put
EVERYTHING into /usr/ibm/uv (or
whatever directory you choose for the
install). For example, the uv.rc
script gets installed into /etc, and the
/etc/inittab file is modified to
call it. Our concern is that there are
other pieces strewn throughout unix
that would be missing if we didn't
actually do the install on every server.
Does anyone know if there are other pieces of UV that don't go into the
install directory - or if this is the only one?

Thanks!

[U2] Example of connecting ASP.net to U2WDE (Redback)

We've had problems with 10.2 on Windows 2000. We installed it right

Our problems seem to be:

Frequent persistent group locks on the voc file to group 0.

Inconsistencies between LISTU and uvlictool user counts.

I'm close to rolling back to an earlier release of UV, probably 10.1.23

Hi guys,

I am messing with Visual Basic Express edition. I was hoping to use
UniObjects against my Universe Database. The examples in the UniObjects
Developers Guide are a little outdated. How do I get the UniObjects to

Basically what I am looking for is a 'quick fix' for the 5 minute
program example in the Developers Guide that has already taken me beyond
that time frame.

Thanks

RE: [U2] How to connect file remotely

2006-06-25 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Bill,
In Universe, you can put a UNC pathname directly into a VOC
pointer for either the data portion, dictionary portion, or both. The
key is to have ALLOWNFS in the uvconfig file set to 1. It will use each
user's credentials to access the share, so if the user does not have
permissions to that share / folder in Windows, then they will not have
access from Universe.

Kevin:

I'm not sure this is even true. For instance, I have UV on my notebook
computer. I have access to a "shared" Windows folder on another server.
I've "mapped" this shared folder to my local UV notebook computer using
the
"Z:" drive letter.

I now have access to this "shared" directory through Windows but __NOT__
via
UniVerse. There are several steps I need to take to gain access (note:
this
is not UV/NET access which is another story). These steps, in UniVerse,
are:

1) In UniAdmin select "Configuration Editor" and change the "ALLOWNFS"
parameter to "1". This is the "critical" piece and escaped me for days
until someone suggested it. :-)

2) Get to TCL in UV and execute the following:

   DOS /C"net use Z: \\Server\Share Passwd /user:Server\U2Admin"

"Server" is the name of the remote Windows server.
"U2Admin" is the Windows user who's logged in.
"Passwd" is the Windows password for the "U2Admin" Windows user.

3) Create an "F" item in the VOC that looks like:

U2TEMP
   0001 F
   0002 Z:\Temp
   0003 D_VOC

This will allow UV to access shared network resources without UV/NET.
In
UniData, as I understand it, one only has to create (VOC) pointers such
as:

U2TEMP
001 DIR
002 \\Server\Share\Temp
003 D_VOC

If this is not accurate (or the least number of steps to achieve this)
I'd
sure like to know.

Bill

[U2] Filepeek usage to find internal file version

2006-06-21 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
I would like to find the internal version of a Universe Dynamic file.
Can someone give me the correct syntax of the filepeek command (or any
other command that would work) to find this information. Is there also
a table of the different versions and any changes made to the file
version?

Where I'm going with this is that I have a customer that is experiencing
frequent broken files. Most of their files are Dynamic. They're
running AIX 4.3.3, Universe 10.1.12. I'm fairly sure that they've been
upgraded over the years, but the files have not been resized or rebuild
since any upgrade, so I suspect that the files are an older vintage.
I'm hoping that this is contributing to their file corruption, but I'd
like to build a script to find the version of all of the files on their
system and report on it.

Thanks in advance...

[U2] Windows UV & host based printers

2006-04-20 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Windows Server 2003
Universe 10.1.11
Printer: HP Color LaserJet 2600n

>From what I've found on HP's website and some other research on the net,
it appears that this printer uses a 'host-based printer driver' or
'host-based printing'. Does anyone have any experience with this
specific printer, or more information about host-based printers in
general?

The problem that we're having right now is that we can print a test page
from Windows and it prints fine. When we try to print from Universe,
nothing comes out on the printer. We've paused the printer and printed
from Universe and I can see the job hang in the queue waiting to print.
We then unpause the printer and still, nothing prints.

It appears from the documentation that printers are being made with less
intelligence now. They're taking the hardware out of the printer that
does the formatting (converting from text to raster) and they're now
building it in to the driver in windows. I haven't tested it yet, but I
know that there is the GDI option to the SETPTR command that might work
for us. Does anyone know if I will still be able to pass PCL codes
through with this mode of printing?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

[U2] [UV] Gigabit NIC

2006-03-15 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Hi all,
I remember seeing something in the list a while back about Gigabit
NIC cards and Universe but I can't seem to find a reference to it and
the search still seems to be down. Does anyone know exactly what the
problem is between Universe on Windows and Gigabit NIC cards? I believe
that it had to do with the driver for the NIC card and I know that
replacing the card with a 10/100 MB card was one solution, but that
doesn't sit well with me or my customers. It's getting hard to tell a
customer that their new fancy server with it's blazing Gig NIC needs to
have it's network card "downgraded" in order to not have problems with
our application. Can I simply change drivers? Do I need to upgrade or
downgrade the driver?

Thanks in advance...

RE: [U2] [uv] Windows printer setup

2006-03-14 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Dianne,
In your SETPTR statement, if you specify the printer name as a
UNC printer (\\server\printer) then yes, you can print to a remote
printer on a separate server or workstation. The user that is sending
the print job needs to have permissions to print to the printer, but
that's normally the case.

Hello wise ones! It has always been my assumption that Universe on
Windows can only deal with printers which are mounted locally. Is there

a way to spool to printers on a separate printer server, other than
mounting each one locally on the uv server?
Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: [U2] Hypothetical question about switching server frontends to SAN w/o reinstalling Universe

2006-01-26 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
So the OS between the two servers is still RedHat, just the difference
between 32 bit and 64 bit, correct? Are they the same release, same
glibc, same kernel?

It doesn't surprise me that it would work as Universe on RedHat is 32
bit, not 64, but I wanted to get more details if possible.

Thanks!

*Extremely* preliminary testing indicates no problems moving from a
X86_64 based SunV20z to an x86 based IBM x345, and from the RH 64 bit OS

to the 32 bit OS, works fine. I'm not going to be able to do any testing

further in depth because we need to reallocate the qlogic cards,
unfortunately, but at least in a trivial way it worked absolutely fine.
System came up and all the custom software I tested worked exactly as
expected.

Many thanks, Mike & all, this is heartening.

RE: [U2] Hypothetical question about switching server frontends to SAN w/o reinstalling Universe

2006-01-23 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Peter,
I've had experience with the same setup. We have used SANs for
High Availability environments as well as Disaster Recovery as well. We
have used this in quite a few environments that want to be up all of the
time. We haven't ever tried to use different OS releases as the purpose
was to keep the system highly available or be back online as quickly as
possible. One of the advantages of a scenario like this is that you
don't need to purchase additional licenses for other servers. If your
application goes down for any reason, you fail the disks over to another
server and bring up the application from there. In other scenarios, you
either purchase hot-standby licenses at a percentage of the full price,
or purchase a small user license, then replace it with the full license
if you have a disaster situation.

SAN w/o reinstalling Universe

Hola all -

We've got our UniVerse installation (RH AS 3.5, U2 10.1.4) on a SAN
partition, /usr/ibm is mounted entirely from there and that's where
everything was installed to. On a hardware testing server, I had the
opportunity to test out pointing an entirely different front-end system
to that partition (well, a copy of it for testing) to see if U2 would
come up, and it did indeed after I:

1) copied uv.rc, S999uv.rc, .uvhome & .unishared over to the new system
2) linked .uvlibs appropriately
3) restore spconfig & the whole spool directory from a backup
4) added the RPC port into /etc/services

Is there anything I missed here that would be helpful and/or necessary
to proper functioning? I'm looking at this as an extreme disaster
recovery scenario possibility, but theoretically it could substantially
ease upgrading the system as well (although ours is pretty recent so
this likely wouldn't come up for some time) with minimal downtime.

Thoughts/comments? Would OS differences matter at all here, i.e. if one
was RH 3.5 64 bit and the next system coming up was 32 bit, or a jump
from the 2.4 kernel to the 2.6 kernel (presuming the release of U2
supported the 2.6 kernel)?

Thanks very much for any input.

For too many years in the U2 Community, we have been laboring with a
single
line editor. Whether it was ED or the improved AE we have been pretty
much
stuck in the 70's and 80's. Others have produced a lot of full-screen
editors, but they take a telnet license for every session. We have a
solution for those who need to edit from multiple accounts, machines and
databases simultaneously in one editor environment.

U2Editor works on workstations such as Windows, Linux, Hp-UX, AIX,
Solaris,
and Mac OS X. U2Editor is built on open source development tool called
Eclipse as a plug-in. By using the Eclipse platform for the open source
community, U2Editor can be updated automatically or manually via the web
using Eclipse Update. Those using U2Editor will always have the most
up-to-date copy of the software.

[U2] Universe GCI on Linux

2005-05-04 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 4)
Kernel: 2.4.21-15.EL #1 SMP
Hardware: Dell PowerEdge SC 1425
Universe: 10.1.4

I've finally gotten UV 10.1.4 to install on this server by installing
the 32 bit version of libstdc++ and libstdc++-devel. Now, I want to
compile in a GCI routine (Blacksmith) and I'm getting error messages.
I'm not a C programmer, so I'm having some trouble with this. Is anyone
else in this situation? I've tried rebuilding UV with no external C
routines and I get the same error messages. Any ideas? I've opened a
case with IBM support, but so far, they haven't gotten very far. I
suspect that it's related to the OS being 64 bit and Universe being
compiled under a 32 bit OS. I've also removed and reinstalled UV a few
times to make sure that I haven't added anything strange.

Here are the error messages that I'm getting:

[U2] Monitoring file changes

Universe 9.6.2.1
Dec OSF1 V4.0F

In our payroll application, we've got a file, EMPMAST which is indexed
(Blacksmith Index for those that are curious). Occasionally, records
are disappearing from the file, but not from the index. The only way
that this should happen is from TCL. I've checked the file for
corruption and it doesn't seem to be corrupt. It's a dynamic file, but
so are most of our other files and we don't have any problems with
those.

Is there some way that I could monitor the file to see who deletes or
changes records? Is there something else that I should be concerned
about?

I'm not sure if it will help, but I'm including an ANALYZE.FILE EMPMAST

[U2] RE: non-admin groups access to universe nt

2004-07-28 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Kevin,
When you changed to 'any directory' or 'any account', what
happens after you enter the password?

You should see something like this:

[Connection opened]
Welcome to the IBM UniVerse Telnet Server.
Enter user name: mikep
Enter password:
Account name or path(uv):

Once that comes up, try attaching to the UV account. Do you get any
error messages? Can you get to TCL?

Thanks for the input Amy...actually, I have already changed the
networking option to 'any directory' and/or 'any account'...it didn't
seem to help. Any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Kevin

RE: [U2] UV on Red Hat Linux

2004-07-03 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
Sara,
You should look at the /etc/xinetd.d/telnet file. Make sure
that disabled is set to no (or commented out). You want to also look
for a line that says only_from and comment that out. Run
/etc/init.d/xinetd restart and you should be good.

Subject: [U2] UV on Red Hat Linux

We are missing something obvious here - can anyone assist by pointing me
in
the right direction (we have even read the manuals - but haven't found
the
vital key)

We obtained a copy of Red Hat RHEL 3 from IBM to test moving to this
platform. It is installed on a test PC and forms part of an isolated
network with a W2003 PDC and an NT4 workstation. UV 10.1 is installed
and
running.

Problem: We cannot telnet to this box from our NT4 workstation. We can
ping the box but a plain windows NT4 telnet session gives a Connect
Failed
message.
We can telnet into UV from the Linux server (to itself) and we can
telnet
out from the Linux server to the NT4 workstation (where we also have a
version of UV running from a previous test), but not from NT4 into the
Linux
box.

Any suggestions would be very welcome - on or off line.

[U2] Crystal Reports / ODBC

2004-06-14 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
I've heard rumors that newer releases of Crystal Reports do not play
happily with Universe ODBC. Does anyone know why that is, and what
version(s) of Crystal do not work?

Thanks,

RE: [U2] [UV/Windows] Authentication / encryption issues

2004-06-07 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
LeRoy / Bill,
We are interested in the same thing, as are other people, I'm
sure. If instructions do appear, would you be so kind as to post them
to the list.

Thanks,

LeRoy:

Could you please tell me the procedure to get wIntegrate to access
uniVerse
(or anything for that matter) using SSL (or where to find it)? Am I
required to request, pay for, and install an SSL certificate on my dbms
server?

One reason I like AccuTerm is they use SSH, which is normally installed
with
Linux. So, it's just: check the SSH box (instead of telnet) and proceed
as
I normally would.

Bill

P.S. I read a major league "futzing-around" procedure to connect to UV
using
wIntegrate via SSH. Not exactly point'n click. :-)

[U2] Debugging code with #INCLUDES

2004-06-04 Thread Mike Pflugfelder
I've got a customer that is having some problems debugging his Basic
code. He started using the #INCLUDE statement to include code from
other files. He's running the code with the TRAP option so that he gets
dropped to the debugger on non-fatal errors. When the program
encounters an error that comes from the #INCLUDEd file, he's left in the
debugger, on the line where #INCLUDE is. When he tries to step to the
next line, it seems to run the rest of the code in the #INCLUDE, then
puts him at the next line in the main program.

Does anyone know how to tell exactly what line in the #INCLUDE is
causing the problem? Are there any $OPTIONS that could be set to change
this behavior?

Thanks!
