I have the same problem with knot 3 of edgy i386: it does not save the
gateway address when using the Networking pane.
Workaround that seems to work for me: Close the Networking pane and
don't open it anymore. Then add the following line to the corresponding
interface in the file

This is a problem that seems to appear on latest vmware-player ubuntu
package. I use it every day and everytime I suspend my laptop I have to
close vmware-player and do:
$ sudo /etc/ini.t/vmware-player restart
Only then I can start vmware-player again and have working network on
it.

I can confirm this as I've just upgraded to Edgy and had to use the
above to get my PC discoverable. :-(
I also don't know if this changed in Dapper or Edgy as I'd not tried it
since Breezy, sorry!
