I obviously am not able to provide a copy of the original menu.list file
(since the update changed that one thouroughly).

The ATI's lousy binary drivers don't coexist nicely with other drivers.
However, fglrx is more accurately represented by linux-restricted-modules, so
changing package there. Xserver-xorg-video-ati is the open source driver. Of
course, there's little that can be done in Ubuntu before AMD/ATI
Seems to be solved in the last update of gnome-applets.

Ok, so I did
1) ctrl+alt+F1
2) type in username + password
3) sudo reboot
and this is an error I found:

My processor is an Intel Pentium D 805 processor, as well.

I think this should just have a name change. A simple File - Export
Package List would be better than Save Markings. Since this is exactly
the wording of the various requests I've seen towards this. I know this
