Yes, this is a known bug in KDE's pager.
I added a link to the upstream bug. There were some fixes to kpager in
the latest KDE version to work better with beryl/compiz but evidently
there are still issues.

The latest version of gstreamer 'bad' plugins contains the VCD plugin ported
form gstreamer 0.8. This will be mostly included in Gutsy. So this VCD problem
will settle once for all.

I get the same as Kerouac (Thinkpad T60, Feisty): Fn + F7 doesn't work, but
brightness control switches to external monitor. ?!
The laptop display is switched off while the external monitor is on. Is the
weird keyboard issue just a misconfiguration in Feisty? How does one fix this?

The problem is still there when using the profile I attached earlier. I
tried renaming downloads.rdf as wombat suggested, but it made no
difference - same symptoms, and a new downloads.rdf file was NOT created
by firefox.
I don't think downloads.rdf is the cause of this problem for me.
