A follow-up to my observations of the SCSI address allocation. It looks

You may be onto something there. I have not had any crashes in Gutsy since
I initiated the restricted drivers. Interestingly enough, I was using
restricted drivers with 7.04, and that was still giving me freeze issues.
It wasn't until I made changes suggested by |V|isterX in the Ubuntu forums
When the save dialog pops up, if you right-click on an entry in the
right list box, a popup menu appears with the option to hide the files.
After that is deselected, then close the dialog and reopen it.

ok, I see there are lots of other reports on that.. switching to 16bpp
instead of 24bpp works for me, although it used to work on feisty with
24bpp, but I have bad eyes anyhow so I probably won't notice :)

The only people who need Xgl to run compiz are those using the fglrx drivers.

Yes, you can try to reinstall packages with: apt-get install --reinstall
package
And use the locate command to find files with for instance nvidia in the
name. Maybe you have stuff in /usr/local?

fine, and everything looks OK. I can open firefox, and it still runs
fine, but when I change URL, the whole computer locks up. Num-lock and

Yeah, the Windows ones are supposed to be (channel, target, lun) or
(controller, target, lun).
I would have thought logically they would all have the same controller,
but maybe SATA is handled differently.

primary slave, IDE
