This is the chip info: Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)
On 8.04 I had to manually download the linux drivers and install them, they
worked quite well (except the frequent disconnect)
On 8.10
No issues with Pidgin in Intrepid.

bug in KDE itself, since we were including the dataengine. And since

I have uninstalled Vmware and kept an eye on the logs.
After Vmware has been remove avahi reveiled that it had put the vmware
networking devices in it's mDNS grip:
