After some more testing (and numerous rebooting) I found the culprit. My laptop
(a HP6710b) came with Windows XP professional pre installed. HP added a
credential manager and HP protecttools, after removing them I'm able to use
Windows without corrupting the MBR.

The problem was I've never change the theme since I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Beta
on this laptop.

Also, another tought I had is to leave Gconf keys for setting
postiion/orientation/gravity of notify-osd.
This way I think that everyone is going to be pleased. Newcomers would
enjoy the results of Ayatana guidelines, and advanced users can aways
use gconf-editor to change the default behavior. In
I did rm -rf ~/.hplip and tried again, but still have the same issue. I
will try with system-config-printer and see if that works.

Todays updates brought a small improvement for me,
about -5 sec using stopwatch, and -10 sec using bootchart...
Maybe the developers are on the right way...
For those interested tuxradar dot com has made a boot-race between Vista,
Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10.

Summarizing..
running the generic kernel.. with 4GB installed 3GB visible, observe:
choppy sound in virtualbox XP under Ubuntu 9.10 just after upgrade.
In order to install the alsa backports pkg I chose to install a kernel
backports package. I chose the kernel image-pae backports just because
