Ok, I _finally_ have an update on this. I put another hard drive into
the system, booted an Ubuntu 16.04.1 live DVD I burned today, and
installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 on this test hard drive. When I booted the
live DVD, the video issue occurred, so I re-booted and specified the
"nomodeset" parameter.

drive, just the eliminate any one-time glitches that might have
occurred.
Also, only Ubuntu and updates through Software Updater have been
installed. No
I also have the same problem reported by the OP: I have an original xbox
360 kinect and when connected to a box running Ubuntu 16.04.1 and kernel
4.6.0-040600-generic, it keeps connecting and reconnecting.

I first installed Ubuntu 32-bit desktop some years ago (I believe 11.04)
and have been upgrading it every six months. I am now up to 16.04 and
have not ever experienced this shutdown problem.
Since Chrome no longer supports 32-bit, I have downloaded 16.04 64-bit
(and verified the sha256).
