Maybe this should be an enhancement request then. I don't want to touch
my hard disk. And if the live CD ISO can boot from a USB stick, why
can't Ubuntu itself not launch from an USB stick?
Also, if it is not supported, why can I select this option in the
installer as if it is supported?

trying to install the boot loader on the very same USB stick as the live CD.
This is not what I was trying; I did the following instead:
* one SD card with Live CD
* one empty USB stick to install Ubuntu on.

Please do not suggest to install third-party packages, even if from the
upstream developper. It is a very bad idea in almost all situations.
The real problem is how to distinguish those situations from the ones
where it might be OK (for the ordinary user). Thus, the normal user

thanks for the ping I didn't see the bug before.
For me things worked right out of the box, but I could reproduce by
uninstalling the gir1 package that was mentioned before.
