ok, I take that back. Rebooting to -36 after reinstalling nvidia gets a
successful boot, but does NOT get working displays. Looks like this is
an nvidia driver issue, and NOT a kernel issue.
Though I was getting lockups on the same setup without the nvidia

And to help you Fix these ISSUES for not me but ALL Ubuntu enthusiasts,
especially for newbies, as these workarounds are really only for those like
me who try very hard to solve problems!
Ubuntu will never get to mainstream unless it is (IDIOT Proof)
So here is my workaround which INDEED,
GNOME Software might be the wrong package, the MATE Software Boutique is
a different app. A quick search suggests that it might be part of the
MATE welcome center, but a look into the package couldn't confirm that.

I haven't seen this issue since I filed this report, and I have no idea
how to reproduce it, so it may be best to close this. If I spot the
issue again, I'll perhaps have a look at the source code, and see if I
have any suggestions of what it could be.

Software Boutique window suddenly shows Welcome window and looses all
Public bug reported:
Burnt latest ubuntu 18.04 iso to usb using etcher.
Installed onto brand new Samsung disk and got this error and asked to
