default repos) and the problem still exists. So I'm without a
workaround. If there is a fix other than default update, can someone

This sounds crazy, but this seems to happen much more frequently when I
have, or am interacting with, a terminal or emacs in the second/external
screen. The resolution of the display is huge, so these windows tend to
be a small fraction of the display.
Also, I think it's actually only the
(sorry.. continued:) For instance, it happens quite often exactly as a
close a terminal with Ctrl-D in the external monitor!

Yes, I read that. But these instructions, with customized text, seem to me
incomplete and awkward. They don't tell you how to use the key. The linked page
you mentioned has another link ("Read about installing") which

following error, and a system problem (apt) dialogue box:

Launching ardesia from the command line gets me drawing nicely, but the
vertical white bar that appears has no buttons. It's all white.
Mouseover shows me the tooltips, and clicking on some seems to work
(changing colour, for instance), but the buttons are not rendered.
