using this in my xorg.conf resolved the problem and gave me the right
resolution (1600x1200) :

I did the 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' thing but I end up having
some kind of virtual desktop in 1280x1024 (the screen slides when the
mouse touches the borders).
I tryed to do 'sudo ddcprobe | grep monitorrange'
wich gave me

There are actually two workarounds WORKING (I did test)
So yes system boots fine after you use one of them.

keyboards but no image to show the key placements.
system is 6.10 x86_64, upgraded from a 6.06 with the 'gksu' command,
worked on 6.06, forced to reinstall the gnome-control-center package to

update done today, switching to kernel 2.6.15-26-amd64-generic.
No change:
-Will now halt
-black screen but power remains
-motherboard starting to beep after a while (you have to completely remove the
power cord or press reset to restart cleanly)
