I personally can confirm the issue. I first noticed it with another
Linux distro (a rescue distro) that loaded menu.c32 by default. From
syslinux 3.53 to 3.61, the bug existed. The last patch (to the syslinux
core/) before 3.62 resolved the issue. 3.62 and later work without any
known issues
this is a duplicate of bug #114079 . I have been waiting for the fix for

JUST an FYI to Alberto and anyone with an older NV11 or so GPU, I
installed the Nvidia driver that was posted in this thread late last
week(96.x), directly from the nvidia web site per the instructions that
were posted here. then Alberto strongly suggested that we wait for the
ubuntu deb package,
Ii should clarify my point, in the past the 96.x drivers would not
install or enable on my GeForce2 Go laptop, so I was forced to use the
71.x drivers. This time however the 96.xx drivers installed without
complaint - even if it was directly from the Nvidia web site using the
Nvidia installer. So,

guess I'll have to wait for Alberto too, no clue how to grab it and get

actually I posted at the same time as the post with instructions above,
new drivers are installed and working just fine for a Geforce2 Go. One
little issue, compiz will not enable ( desktop effects ) but I believe

I did lots of searching on the net regarding this problem, what I found

removed from the repo until they do not present this condition. but
thats just my opinion. this test was preformed on a dual-cpu 2.0 ghtz

hu, I'm not sure I agree. As I stated above, I have seen this high

I'd like to take one minute to make sure that I am not giving out the
wrong impression, I'm simply trying to get to the bottom of the 100% CPU
racing condition on screensavers. I'm not knocking any code or anyones

Tom at System76 support mentioned that the bug may be related to
dynticks enabled in the 2.6.24 and later kernels. I've experienced the
computer shutting down with no warning several times due to the faulty
battery reading and GPM. Luckily, this computer has only been used for
testing.

Fix doesn't work on Hardy beta 64-bit with kernel 2.6.24-15. Same wacky
battery meter readings.

Has anyone else encountered this bug? Basically, video preview only works
prior to recording the first video. Then, the image freezes.
On a separate note, I've also noticed that the video box lags behind the window
box frame when moving it around the screen. That may be related to my graphics
Follow-up: I haven't experienced the sporadic and annoying brightness
bug since Hardy beta (64 bit), but unreliable power readings through GPM
still remain. In fact, the laptop erroneously shut down on me in the
middle of working due to a faulty reading--battery was actually just
charged.

Same crash occurred today 3 Apr 2008 on Hardy beta with all updates.
