Looks like this was something specific to my system: I had two console- kit-daemon executables, one in /usr/local/sbin and one in /usr/sbin. I removed the one in /usr/local (together with ck-list-sessions etc) and now things are almost working. However, console-kit-daemon does not start on boot.

Yes, the DNS server in my DSL modem does not support IPv6 (A requests ?). I am wondering why 'host' does a IPv6 (AA) lookup after receiving a valid response on IPv4 (AAA request). I try looking into the debug printouts, but did not learn much. I can post the debug-output if it is helpful.
