One easy change that seems to largely fix the problem for me is to
increase the Edge Reveal Timeout to 1000 (one second). This pretty
much eliminates Unity jumping open when I don't want it, at the price of
a small, occasional wait.
The main bad thing about this is that it's poor user interface

I'm not that crazy about code that relies on $PWD, either, but
nonetheless there's quite a bit of it out there that does.
The reason I'm thinking of this is a bug is that virtually every
environment in which you can run a program under Linux will include a

variable in the 'sudo' environment.

wishlist item. Either $PWD belongs in the sudo default environment or
it does not. If it does, this is a bug, it should be fixed, and
probably that won't be very difficult to do.

I'm also seeing this (w/Inspiron 1420), starting recently. I guess in
the past it's worked most of the time--I suppose 2-10% failure might be
what I'm seeing, too.

doing a half-assed job of sticking with the standards (when

be due to updates or maybe it's intermittent.
[I do still have an occasional interruption of audio during disk
activity (e.g., app swapping back in), but this is a different problem,
and I guess not that annoying.]

After upgrading my system an hour ago, I notice that sound (rhythmbox w
pulseaudio) is extremely choppy. On a hunch, I disabled normal visual
effects, returning to none. This provided immediately relief. I

I also had this problem, which I worked around using 'alsamixer -c0' and
unmuting things.
This is particularly pernicious because the default sound control that
Jaunty provides doesn't have these mute buttons, at least for my
hardware, nor are they apparent when I run just 'alsamixer'.

Another wrinkle. I'm on intrepid, and have been seeing this bug. I
just booted a Jaunty live cd (alpha 2) to look at another bug. This bug
is also fixed. *However*, when I rebooted into my Intrepid install,
but bug was also fixed (i.e., bad behavior is not occurring).

Feisty boot fail can't access tty IDE SATA
Ubuntu new with Feisty is trying to do more things in parallel to
speed up boot time.
If this parallel system is active at the point when the error occurs,
this suggests another possible cause. Perhaps the startup dependencies
