I'm currently experiencing this problem in maverick. I've added the
/etc/udev/rules.d/85-lvm2.rules file with what's been suggested above
(i.e., without 'ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}==lvm*|LVM*'), and updated my
initramfs, but it isn't activating the LVM.

Successfully reproduced this bug in 0.47 pre-release as downloaded from
Bryce's link. I've attached a screenshot.
To reproduce, draw a square filled with any color, set it as a pattern,
then make a larger rectangle-shape and fill with that pattern.

identical to Michael Vogt's. Then, the next package to be upgraded
froze, and I stopped the upgrade. I had to kill dpkg to continue
upgrading later. This completely destroyed the upgrade process and I was
left to do the rest
