Same problem here, upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy. Error message looks identical to Michael Vogt's. Then, the next package to be upgraded froze, and I stopped the upgrade. I had to kill dpkg to continue upgrading later. This completely destroyed the upgrade process and I was left to do the rest
