Hm, I found this in the release notes: USB stick installs will fail unless
they are created without persistence enabled. This is fixed in updates, but not
on the CD. (627672)
So I'll make a new usb, and retry, and close this bug if it works.

1) boot the machine, do some work with it

It was working until today, december 3rd 2008.
I have GDM set to open a KDE session and also set to aoutomatically log
in as my user.
Then I logged in with a GNOME session for just some small things and I
accepted an update from the update manager.
And now I run in this nasty bug, I have the

Was it a fresh install or an upgrade via the update manager ?
Anyhow, I had the same problem and it was that upgrading had set the PCM
volume to 0
ALSO, the alsamixer had changed in the upgrade, so the simple
alsamixer command did NOT show the PCM volume.
The new alsamixer had to be run like
I'd like to suggest something.
Try to run this command in the terminal:
alsamixer -Dhw
Pay attention to the -Dhw part.
In the screen that shows up, DOUBLE check if the PCM volume is set to 0.
It seems that on some Intrepid installations, that is inexplicably so.

The prefix tab heading says maschera that is the Italian for mask.
So it should say prefix at least, so people expecting the dear old
netmask could google it and find out

I upgraded to Intrepid today with the update manager and my wireless
network settings were inherited from the previous Hardy installation;
Now, from the output of ifconfig wlan0 I see the netmask is
255.255.255.0 (see the attached text file)
Still, in the Network Manager it shows it to be 24 !!

In my case, the sound IS working. It only works through the speakers,
NOT through the USB
Sorry, I didn't test the libasound package indicated by Luke, so the
removing of the .pulse* files from the home dir is not supposed to
produce effects.

Well, I tried to install the libasound plugins for my architecture and
the resukt is that libasound2 is NOT installed on the machine and the
plugins package depends on that so it can not be installed.
But I swear the headphone were working until september 25

Ubuntu has a too old version of solfege. This is fixed in 3.10.1. But
the workaround mentioned above using --no-sound works fine.

at the (initramfs) prompt and found out ther was no vfat module.
Since I was at it I also noticed there no ntfs either.
I can't repot any log because there's no filesystem I can mount, without
vfat. Sorry
