I can confirm it on my X60s.
I see no output from the xbindkeys --key or the xev. But if I do a
cat on /dev/input/event6 which is assigned to the thinkpad_acpi
module, it show some output when I press the ThinkVantage key - but the
power button shows nothing.

This problem still occurs on Kubuntu (since 10 April). When I login I can see
the panel and all applets properly being displayed. When all is ready the
complete panel becomes empty. This occurs in about 50% of the cases.
The trick I found to temporarily fix it is:
- Right click on the panel.

I still get the error after the fix. I'm using an ATI card and the
driver installed by EnvyNG.
Gamma setting does work, just not with the sliders. The sliders don't
change the calibration image' e.g. but if I select any entry from
Target gamma drop down it does this without problems

Currently I'm using Ubuntu Hardy (8.04-Beta).
I reinstalled it, and found the following glitches:
- Close button of Info Window does not work
- Only seems to support 1 processor

After installing Hardy Beta on a friend's PC this suddenly works
without a flaw, but he's using the new card nvidia driver. However,

Setting it as default is a bit harsh. Why put ~bin in by default, and not e.g.
~shs.

Hereby confirmed the changes/workaround work for the default xorg.conf
2 gripes:
- only 640x480 and 800x600 resolution.
- Gamma correction doesn't work... it also didn't work before the changes and I
will open a new bug tracker for it.

The sliders for gamma connection in the MonitorDisplay module of system
settings does not work (currently on kubuntu hardy alpha 6).
To test:
- open a konsole (terminal if not under kubuntu)
- sudo displayconfig
- go to the Color Gamma
It's a problem with the xorg.conf (apparantly some items were removed
which MonitorDisplay module still looks at), so anyone who by default
replaces it by his own probably won't get the error.
For first time users this would be pretty annoying.

That bug is pretty well described. If you like closing outstanding bugs
just because you're too lazy to check on your own if the bug is still
valid. The quality of Ubuntu doesn't get better by that behaviour and I
think you should really reconsider this way of getting closed bug
reports.

I ran kdesudo displayconfig from a konsole and I get the exact error message
as in the original posters (I'm running hardy alpha6).
After fiddling a bit it seems that as pointed out above adding the
ServerLayout section does the trick. Add it to xorg.conf and it opens
again (it won't close
But that's what changing the component and not closing the bug is for,
right?

For now I would prefer Scott's idea on the development list, option d): use
the workaround for 8.4/KDE3. It would be sufficient for beginning users, while
more advanced users can install whatever they like.
