Excellent, it is unlikely the linux-restricted-modules update would have
changed this, but the linux-ubuntu-modules is likely to have fixed this.
As you are now working I will close this one off. Thanks.

I just noticed that linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-23-generic and
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-23-generic were not installed. After the
manual installation of the two packages sound works again with 2.6.24-23
(2.6.24-23.48). I would say that this report can be closed.

Hello Andy! It does still not work with the latest proposed kernel. Can
you please explain what /proc/version_signature is or should be? It is a
0 byte file on my system.

Ok, after more futzing, it turns out my problem is unrelated: Looks like
at some point usb audio started getting loaded into index 1 before
hda_intel had loaded, and then there was a collision. I did add an
options snd_usb_audio index=3, but snd_usb_audio is ignoring this,
which seems to be the
It is cirtainly not expected that this chipset would cease to be
supported. Could you confirm that this is still true with the latest
Hardy kernels, mostly the reports here lack the full version from
/proc/version_signature to be 100% sure. If it does still not work with
the latest -proposed
I may have exactly the same problem. I have a K8NGM2-FID motherboard
with built in audio (Realtek ALC880 chipset, I believe), plus a couple
of other cards with audio (one sound card, one a/v card). I force all
three into a fixed order (otherwise they change places randomly each
reboot which is a
This does not work for me. After entering sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel I
get ERROR: Module snd_hda_intel does not exist in /proc/modules. The
sad thing is that it worked until kernel 2.6.24-21 without any problems.
It still does not work with 2.6.24-23!
It is really sad that Ubuntu's Enterprise
I also had sound problems on my

* Add options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd probe_mask=1 to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
* sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel
* sudo modprobe
I've marked bug 303487 as a duplicate of this report. I'm attaching the
alsa-info.txt file that Jonannes Langlotz had posted to bug 303487.
Thanks.
