I seem to have the same (or similar) problem. I never receive automatic
notifications of updates in Kubuntu 9.10 / Karmic. I verified
KPackageKit is set to load as a startup service. Every few weeks I run
synaptic just to see if updates exist. They always do, but I must
manually search for these
The crashes mentioned after the original report are unlikely to be the
same. Closing until the original crash can be reproduced.

Sorry, seems I was too fast. Today KPackageKit died when it should do
two minor upgrades. I did an apt-get update/upgrade right after I
received the notification in KDE, before starting KPackageKit itself.
Apt said:
...
The following packages will be upgraded:
linux-libc-dev upstart
2 upgraded,
Confirmed. I can do minor updates, but today there would be some kernel
updates and KPackagekit crashed once again, because the upgrade required
would be a dist-upgrade.

I think I have the same problem.
I tried to get a stack trace, but dbg claims that the program has exited
normally when it crashes.
I think it might have something to do with packages that are kept back (
I don't know the right expression, I have the German version of apt).
Here is the output
Same here: KPackageKit always crashes if a dist-upgrade is necessary to
update packages.

I tried installing kpackagekit-dbgsym but it does not seem to be
available. The only dbgsym I could find was:
eg...@daedalus:~$ apt-cache search dbgsym
pkg-create-dbgsym - automatically build debug symbol ddeb packages
Anyway, I tried to run dbg on the process, but right now I could not
Following the guide at https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Backtrace, could you try
to get a backtrace by installing kpackagekit-dbgsym and running
kpackagekit through gdb please? Thanks in advance.

About the 2nd issue : kpackagekit is using policykit (as a replacement for
*sudo). If you want a Qt popup, please ensure that the packagekit-kde package
is installed.
If packagekit still popup in GTK, uninstall packagekit-gnome.
