status. With no meaningful input to the bug in 11 months, and a 5-month-
old unanswered question, there's little recourse but to kill the bug.

bug as invalid due to lack of activity. If anybody would like to pursue

Marking it invalid is not really accurate or true. What happened was
that I couldn't get ubuntu work with the Xerox printer in Gutsy either
and I did not bother responding to the above note because I had no
confidence that my efforts would bear fruit. I had already spend an
inordinate time
I guess this is the bitter end, or? I just can;'t get it to work with Feisty
or Edgy? I thnk
it cannot be a kernel problem because I can print in Knoppix 5.1 on /dev/lp0.
I configured a generic PCL5e printer on LPT1 and printed the test page. One
page

Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf adding a line FileDevice
Yes. Then restart CUPS with sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart.
simply adding FileDevice Yes as a line without quotes, of course. and
restarted
Then I entered
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usblp0
sudo usb_printerid
So the driver seems also not to be the problem (you could also try to
send raw text to the printer via /dev/lp0, does that take so long,
too?).
Looks like this is a kernel problem.

Curious though about these comparisons:
On LPT1:
DocuPrint has the above problem
HP 882C no problems
but both use same driver
As smb network printer
DocuPrint and HP both work perfectly.

does not make it work better. The printer begins to warm-up as before but
it doesn;'t begint to print after 1 hour. One result is that with file:/dev/lp0

The printer warms-up, the data light comes on, but still no printing after
20 minutes. I must leave soon, but I will just leave it on and see
what happens. I assume this is my standard situation. It will print
sometime overnight!

It now has tried to print for 40 minutes. So I took the printer offline and
printed 'form feed' which basically prints out what the printer has so
far. What it prints is about 2.5 inches of the Printer Test Page. So I
predict that it will print in 3 hours.

Can you try another driver with your printer? If there are no other
drivers than HPIJS listed for your printer in the gnome-cups-manager,
choose the Generic PCL 5e Printer and there choose drivers like
ljet4 or Gutenprint.

In the past I tried ljet4 and two Gutenprint drivers that were listed with
same result. I haven't tried adding a Generic PCL 5e printer. WIll try that
at work tomorrow.

The print queue name is the name with which the printer is listed in the
print dialogs of applications and which is used to specify a printer

I managed to borrow an HP Laserjet 5p from a colleague and
hooked it up to my LPT1 and was able to configure the printer and print the
test page in no time. It has to be the hpjis driver for this Xerox machine.

After having all this information it is for sure not a problem of
foomatic-filters or the driver (PostScript-to-PCL filter). It seems to
be a problem o9n the communication between the PC and the printer via
USB.
Canididates for packages in which there is the bug are the USB backand
of CUPS and
1. I ran Knoppix 5.1 live on the same machine and was able to configure
this printer and print the test page. Knoppix was using the Backend
Device /dev/lp0, Driver Type DB driver, Manufacturer Xerox, Model
DocuPrint 4512, Decription Foomatic+hpjis.
2. I hauled the printer home to see if I can

improvement of the performance of foomatic-rip does not help.

When I try to install the foomatic-filters, I am told it is already installed.
So I did not reinstall it, and tried to print the test page. The test page has
not printed in over an hour now, and the printer is constantly in warm-up
stage. The test page prints eventually because this morning
At my wit's end (because if I can't print, I must reinstall windows),
I reinstalled foomatic with no luck. I wish I could get this to work.
