I have a 1 gb sd card reading on a compaq presario v3000 with a built in
sd card reader (R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter). The system

This is true for Dapper I think, not sure if it happened on Edgy for me. It
doesn't actually lock up, but actually waits very long time. Ctrl + 4 trick
which sends signal to hal daemon, works at least on Dapper.
I guess the actual problem is not in pbuilder, but hal service (init
script).

At this stage I would be doing up my own package, the feisty package
likely wont compile on edgy due to the IFLA_RTA patch being somewhat
incorrect.
You could grab SVN, or grab the feisty package and modify avahi-core
/iface-linux.c and avahi-autoipd/iface-linux.c according to these
patches
I can reproduce this (both the problem and the fix). Packaging 0.5.0
would fix this.
