After an upgrade of a completely fresh intrepid install I ran into the same
problem. Moving .kde / .kde4 directories didn't help.
Strace shows that kdostartupconfig tries to open a file from the .kde/
directory - the file however is created automatically in the .kde4 directory.
This is 3.5 code,
I have the same problem with a Radeon X1950PRO, it seems that the driver
is loaded fine but that GDM crashes. I found the following erros in
/var/log/gdm/:0.log

Apart from that, /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun should get added to JAVA_HOME_DIRS, so

I have solved this problem on my system by replacing my USB 2.0 PCI
card.
I had this problem with multiple hard drives connected to a USB2.0 PCI
card in my home server (just a headless desktop machine serving data
and printers to my home network).
My old USB 2.0 card was a CompUSA brand card
Forgot to mention that my machine is running Hardy with all current
updates. Before replacing the USB card I tested to make sure the problem
appeared by attempting to copy a large file over the network, powered
down, swapped out the card, powered up and tested again and found the
problem gone.

I just upgraded Ubuntu and am having the same problem
I tried to use 'some' of these commands in my terminal but they didnt
work
Is there any easier solution to enable me to view myspace pages without
Firefox crashing?

Using Steinar's libvnc.so, occasionally when Firefox attempts to display
some types of content, Xorg will die (but gdmgreeter successfully
restarts).
The Xorg log shows:

As gnome-open $url works fine, I conclude that whatever it is that
handles .desktop files at fault.
gnome-open test.desktop does not do anything, as there is no MIME
handler for the type. Presumably, then, Nautilus is short-circuiting. So
Nautilus is at fault, by my judgement.

mercurial 1.0.1-2 is missing a dependency
I can confirm it (texlive 2007-13 on Ubuntu 8.04) and also that the
installation of cm-super by synaptic or apt-get will solve it, without
changes to the latex document. cm-super is not installed by default,
perhaps because there are good alternative T1 fonts. I just want to

Yes, it happens with applications associated to extensions (file types)
too, see comment # 12 in this bug report.
Yes this is with a clean Hardy install. It happened since day 1 of the
install, and it is still happening today after 200 official updates
(July/08).
