this happened because i first installed the smplayer's site ubuntu deb
package, and then i upgraded to the ubuntu version.
purging smplayer and reinstalling fix this problem.

Metacity had compositing-manager set to true (I don't know why as I
don't remember having enabled it, but I am not sure). This was
conflicting with compiz.

1. Play a flash video (for instance youtube video), or play an .avi file with
mplayer. Note that both run OK.
2. Open bmpx
3. Check flash video/.avi video: they still work.

Local login fails without LDAP
Don't make scripts, just copy the relevent files to the relevent folders
after compiling and you'll have it working without any silly scripts.

network :( that is the reason why i do ./wlan0up at startup...
