I borrowed a friend's external mic to first make sure that it would work
and later bought a super cheap external mic on newegg or amazon (I don't
remember which) for less than $10 (USD). I am hoping that this bug will
be fixed soon, hopefully for the next release of Ubuntu in April!

This[1] is not an oops, but a BUG_ON() called on purpose inside the aufs
code. The function follows:

Do I understand right?
It is not and alsactl problem that sound volume is set to zero during
boot.
It is instead a PulseAudio problem which only happens with this laptop
and only after ALSA is upgraded.

I solved this problem by disabling Compiz/Beryl/Whatever Effects
(System-Preferences-Apperance-None).
Note: COMSOL 3.5 maximizes its windows with Normal Effects
(System-Preferences-Apperance-Normal).
