[Bug 700347] [NEW] Does Files, Folders and Documents need to be a distinct chapter

2011-01-08 Thread Book 'em Dano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-docs

As the files-and-docs.xml file appears now, it only provides links to
other sections in the documentation and does not provide any unique
substantial information. The file is formatted as a chapter and when it
is rendered in yelp or in a browser, it gives the impression that Files,
Folders and Documents will be a substantive chapter, I felt misled upon
reading it and only discovering links to other chapters/sections.
Perhaps files-and-docs.xml could be integrated could into another
chapter/section, since it is curt.

[Bug 700345] [NEW] No launcher, no files, no monted disk on the desktop

2011-01-08 Thread Espinet
Public bug reported:

When logging in ubuntu natty 11.04 alpha1 (with both unity and the
classic Desktop (gnome-panel)), the desktop background is showing
normally but there are no launcher, no files and no display of the
mounted disk,as one would normally expect (see attached screenshot). The
right-click feature (giving access the the appearance preference for
example) is also unavailable. This bug is strange and new, as previous
use of this version of ubuntu didn't reveal that kind of problem.

[Bug 700351] [NEW] Advanced Topics is curt, brief

2011-01-08 Thread Book 'em Dano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-docs

Similar to bug 700347, the Advanced Topics chapter is misleading. As
it appears as a chapter when rendered, I thought before looking at it,
that it would contain some unique valuable information, but sadly, it
only contains links to other sections in documentation. Perhaps a
reference to Advanced Topics could be integrated the Basic Commands
section or other appropriate section/chapter since Advanced Topics is
extremely brief.

Sure, every build in launchpad has the logs avaliable in the
corresponding builds section [0], and it sould have being with the
last natty versions as the build process takes them at the beginning
(see the logs). I have made those builds also in my own computer and
with the same build tools it crashes without the patch and works with
it.

The working patch is in the shankao2 logs, I tested another proposed solution

gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:i386 0.10.25-4ubuntu3~diwic2
on Maverick were enough to fix my long standing problem when trying to run the
following:
wget http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/wavpcm/8_Channel_ID.wav
echo extra-arguments=--log-target=syslog --resample-method=speex-float-3
~/.pulse/client.conf
pulseaudio -k
gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=8_Channel_ID.wav ! decodebin ! audioconvert !

I have a feeling other media players also exhibited symptoms but as
gstreamer is the main one that I use that is what I have tested here.

[Bug 294977] Re: not clear how to configure with pam-auth-update

2011-01-08 Thread Nick Piggott
The common-account created by pam-auth-update when configuring for
cached credentials is failing on my stock Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 install.

The common-account created by pam-auth-update is:

# here are the per-package modules (the Primary block)
account [success=2 new_authtok_reqd=done default=ignore]pam_unix.so
account [success=1 default=ignore] pam_ldap.so
# here's the fallback if no module succeeds
account requisite pam_deny.so
# prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already;
# this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code
# since the modules above will each just jump around
account requiredpam_permit.so
# and here are more per-package modules (the Additional block)
account requiredpam_krb5.so minimum_uid=1000
# end of pam-auth-update config

However, this fails because neither pam_unix.so nor pam_ldap.so can
succeed when the machine is offline.

This makes all offline logins fail:

u...@host:~$ sudo login user
Password:
You have been logged on using cached credentials.

Authentication failure
u...@host:~$

If using cached-credentials, common-account needs to be adapted to
ignore failures against pam_unix and if the ldap server cannot be
reached. My proposed amendment is to amend the criteria for success to
the pam_ldap module to:

account [success=1 authinfo_unavail=1 default=ignore] pam_ldap.so

This should ensure that the module passes if the LDAP server is
unavailable.

A better solution would be to implement the account method for
pam_ccreds, which would allow differentiation between a machine that's
online but unable to reach the LDAP server, versus a machine that's
genuinely offline and relying on cached credentials.

Not joking at all for myself. Not a solution for everyone probably,
but I'm very happy now. I enjoy opening up hardware. Replacing
wireless card is trivial compared to the soundcard replacement I did a
few months ago. :) Main thing is that I'm not even thinking about
this bug anymore and I'm glad about it.

get any more e-mails from users who've lost data because you're

[Bug 700361] [NEW] indicator-applet volume does not detect sink change

[Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-08 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi, I'm the maintainer of zim (upsteam). I agree that the description
could be more clear and I'm open to suggestions. So far I have not seen
a proposal for a text to replace it that seems better to me. If there is
a concrete proposal I will consider it for the description in the
upstream project page etc. Of course you are free to go ahead with a
modified version in the ubuntu or debian packages.

In any case I would appreciate it if the reference to wiki style
editing is kept in the description since I know from discussions with
actual users that this is a common search term that makes people end up
with zim.

Regards,

Jaap

[Bug 599017] Re: [gm45] Xorg freeze on Firefox on one particular page

2011-01-08 Thread viktor
Confirmed on my Vaio laptop (lucid 32bit), but not on my desktop with Nvidia
graphics (64bit).
The bug is specific to Firefox (3.6.13 currently) since no crash occurs on the
pagesjaunes.fr website with Chromium.

[Bug 49819] Re: NFS and SMB transfers across LAN work very slowly

2011-01-08 Thread mmm
Well i have quite fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and i am having
the same problem. When i test network performance between server and
client using the iperf tool both UDP and TCP shows speeds close to
100mpbs (slightly over 9MBps). When i try to copy larger file using NFS
it has constant transfer around 700kbps.

[Bug 399851] Re: [needs-packaging] fgrun, A flight gear launcher.

2011-01-08 Thread Flames_in_Paradise
Hello Chris,

this is a very good idea, to put his back to Debian, if nothing happens
there; like lets say another year; to update even Flightgear to 2.0. It
might be an idea using the build-service of OpenSuse:

https://build.opensuse.org/

Flightgear 2.0 is availble on Mandriva 2010.2+ others like openSuse too
... since a little while...

RE: [Bug 694886] Re: package linux-image-2.6.32-27-generic 2.6.32-27.49 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-01-08 Thread N Twerdochlib
Just got around to checking this out. Thank you. Your response is
correct. I had been compiling grub 0.98 for use on an embedded system
and must have mistakenly installed to the boot drive of the laptop.
Reinstall Grub2 solved the problem.

I have moved up to using Grub2 so if I make this mistake in the
future..

Thanks again.

failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script
returned error exit status 1

Was prompted about a missing /boot/grub/menu.lst. Selected the default
'N' to not create the file.

Your bug report shows that this system was initially installed as Ubuntu
10.04 LTS, which uses grub2 by default, but that you have subsequently
removed the grub2 package in favor of grub1 without configuring it.
Saying 'N' here means that you are declining to configure it, leaving
your system with no way to update a boot loader config for the newly-
installed kernel. You need to have a configured bootloader, either by
configuring grub1 here or by reinstalling grub2 with the following
command: 'sudo apt-get install grub-pc'.

(The correct default answer to the grub prompt is 'no' because there are
other steps you must take to configure the bootloader - such as making
sure that the corresponding version of grub is installed to the actual
boot block of your boot device.)

[Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-08 Thread Chris Wilson
Hi Jaap, what do you think of the following? I've written it to contain
the word 'wiki' while briefly describing how a wiki works for those user
unfamiliar with the term.

Zim is a graphical text editor which allows the user to maintain a collection
of wiki-style interconnected notes. The text of each note can have certain
important keywords highlighted with a link that provides a connection
to another note named after the highlighted text. This new note can provide
details on the meaning of the highlighted text, and can even contain links of
 its own.
 .
 Uses of Zim include:
 • TODO lists
 • Taking notes during meetings
 • Drafting blog entries and emails
 • Brainstorming

2011-01-08 Thread Jan Ostrochovsky
Also just tested with recommended fixes, and the scan functionality does
not work.

Tested on 2 systems: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and 10.10. Both also x86_64.

Error message after running xsane: Failed to open device
hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_1050_J410_series?seria=CN07M2P3G505HW: Device busy..

I downloaded hplip 3.10.9, unpacked, modified the right section of
models.dat included in the package, installed all requested dependencies
(needed to run ./configure repeatedly to install all needed packages).
then:

./configure --disable-network-build
make
sudo make install
sudo reboot

still no success...

[Bug 700379] [NEW] X does not start

2011-01-08 Thread Emidio Planamente
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-24-generic

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire One AO751h with Ubuntu 10.10.

After the last update, X does not start anymore.

I have found that the problem is present with the last installed kernel:
linux-image-2.6.35-24-generic.

With the previous kernel 2.6.35-23-generic it still works perfectly.

You can find as attachment the error when I manually start X.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thanks.

[Bug 700378] [NEW] Unable to mount root ext4 filesystem - kernel oops

2011-01-08 Thread Jon Dye
Public bug reported:

This bug report was taken from the 10.10 live cd as I can no longer boot my
system.
One morning when turning on my system it was suddenly unable to boot past the
initram filesystem. When the scripts attempted to mount the root ext4
filesystem there was a kernel oops with the ext4 functions listed in the stack
trace. When booting from the live cd it also attempts to access the partition
(and I don't know how to stop it). I get the stack trace as show in the
attached report (with __percpu__counter_sum in EIP). At this point I cannot do
anything the that partition because all the tools report that it is locked or
in use (e.g. fsck, mount etc). I tried booting from ubuntu 8.something and got
a similar kernel panic as 10.10. I also tried a Mandriva live CD from 2008 and
got similar. At this stage it seems I am unable to repair as everything kernel
panics and I can't see how I will re-install because by the time the live cd
gets to the partitioning stage it's already done this panic.

This is actually my dad's PC so I have only sporadic access so if there
is more I need to investigate it might not be a fast turnaround.

My symptoms sound like those described in this forum thread

[Bug 671457] Re: Hard freeze on resume after suspend to ram, Atom D525

2011-01-08 Thread mb
This bug is not distribution-specific I see the same problem with
various kernels on the ga-d525-tud booting a gentoo system. Kernels I
tested included 2.6.35,2.6.36 and 2.6.37 (all directly from kernel.org).
I always tried to suspend with no drivers loaded and insided the shell
of an initial ram disk.

I had the same problems: kernel panic on resume, nothing from debug
traces. The problem is the same either on bios-version f1 which I had
before and on Version f3 which I flashed just now. I am running the
system via serial console too, which has so far not helped, sadly.

I found another reference to this problem on:
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-pm/msg22828.html

Any hint is welcome. If you need further investigation on my part, just
say so.

integrated+implemented. I actually tried this Version 2 t out on
Opensuse and Mandriva, current versions - early adoptors. I must admit
that I'am impressed.

Would be very pretty to have this on finally in NettyN Too!

Best wishes/

I think we should remove

[Bug 587601] Re: No Logon screen after 'switching user', only an Ubuntu logo and the computers name

2011-01-08 Thread walter----
Ok, I got my gdm stable again.

= in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf I added in the past manually some settings.
More specific, I added two parameters:

IncludeAll=false
Include=user1,user2,user3

(where user1,... where the users I wanted to be used by gdm to show in the
login screen).
At some point there was an issue in gdm that is was showing all users on the
login screen. Apparently this got fixed at some point.

I now excluded these two setting and now gdm is stable again. The issue is no
longer happening.
I can now run again Ubuntu for weeks without rebooting and having multiple
users using it.

In itself this issue is solved. If some developer wants, he can of
course investigate further why gdm could become instable when these two
settings are used.

enjoy,

Walter

[Bug 574296] Re: Gnome theme not applied on session start

2011-01-08 Thread mitch
I had this same issue on my i7 box (no SSD though) in both Ubuntu 10.10
and Linux Mint 10. I was able to fix the issue by following the solution
posted here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/649809 post #68 which adds a short delay to the daemon
loading on startup.

Basically it involves editing /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-
daemon.desktop and changing line 4 to:

Exec= bash -c sleep 2; /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-
daemon

Hope this helps.

[Bug 569812] Re: 4G XS Stick W14 UMTS USB stick is not recognised as a UMTS modem

2011-01-08 Thread christopher rimmele
Hello,

I have the same problem - and so do three of my friends. The XS W14 is
currentlx sold by klarmobil for a reasonable price and is quite
common

Do you have any idea how long it will take ubuntu netbook remix to
accept the stick? Will the patch be included in the regularly !Auto-
Update! ?

This might be a silly question but I am one of the users with a quite
low technical knowledge..

Thanks for the answer in advance..
