I tried starting audacious from console w/o any parameters and with a
playlist argument. Both failed.
The apparently random data in playlist.xspf did exist. It was a bug in ecryptfs.
Nevertheless a messed up config file should be discarded and not render a segv.

I traced memory usage of Ubiquity (with pmap -d) and there is a huge increase
of memory when the slideshow starts (~ +1.5GB)

to the USB-Audio.pcm.iec958_device section and add the following line:
Sennheiser USB headset 999
(including quotes)
...just above the similar Logitech USB Headset 999 line. Notice that

Ok, my hacky changes to Oneiric killed it, so I reinstalled to Precise,
and then applied your built fix. Works beautifully in the environment
is was built for. I think the patch is golden.

Here's a patch, based on reverting the patch that disabled this feature
[1]. Tested to work with at least Gedit and Nautilus, but I haven't
tried if any other apps might regress.
I hope Ubuntu will decide to carry this if the GTK3 guys don't go back
to previous behavior. Right now we have e.g.
