[Bug 50804] Re: Web interface crashes when restarting cups

2006-07-02 Thread Ante Karamatić
Web interface is deprecated in Ubuntu. If you want to use it, you have
to remove both Include directives in cupsd.conf, since CUPS is unaware
of all of its directives (it doesn't check settings in included files).

** Summary changed:

- Web interface crashes when restarting cups
+ Using web interface makes CUPS unusable

** Description changed:

- I've installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake and use the webinterface off cups at
- http://localhost:631.
+ Adding cupys user to shadow, and then making changes trough web
+ interface, results in CUPS being unusable.

- I've added the cupsys user to the shadow group to be able to use the web
- interface to install printers etc.
+ Problem is that, when saving changes, CUPS doesn't read content of
+ included files (ports.conf and browse.conf) but adds Listen and Browsing
+ directives in cupsd.conf.

- When i'm in the admin part of the web interface and i click on the
- 'Change settings' button i get a new page on which cups tells me: Please
- stand by while the server restarts...
-
- After a few seconds i get an error page from firefox that the page it
- can't connect to localhost:631. I have type sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys
- restart to be able to access the web interface again.
-
- I don't know if it's related, but when i do dmesg i get the following
- notifications:
-
- [4298900.166000] ppdev0: unregistered pardevice
- [4298971.817000] ppdev0: registered pardevice
- [4298971.839000] ppdev0: negotiated back to compatibility mode because
user-space forgot
- [4298971.839000] ppdev0: unregistered pardevice
- [4299181.99] ppdev0: registered pardevice
- [4299182.018000] ppdev0: negotiated back to compatibility mode because
user-space forgot
- [4299182.018000] ppdev0: unregistered pardevice
+ CUPS should save changes for Listen and Browsing options in those
+ included files, not in cupsd.conf.

[Bug 51576] rss-glx really slow (only 1-2fps) since recent fglrx driver update

2006-07-02 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

The rss-glx screensavers on dapper used to run at rates similiar to
breezy. Since the recent update to fglrx 8.26.18 (off the Seveas repo),
frame rates are now only 1-2fps. Frame rates are normal (20-30fps) when
run as just the screensaver executable in a window, eg

culprit.

You installed a 3rd party binary driver without following the complete

disable fglr from linux-restricted-modules to get direct rendering back.

[Bug 30007] Re: USB floppy automounting takes very long

2006-07-02 Thread David Balažic
I tried the Dapper i386 Desktop Cd live environment and experienced the
same problem :

doubleclick on the floppy icon na dit takes about a minute to do
something and then it does NOT open the floppy contents. Doubleclicking
it again finaly opens the contents. (file list window).

The same happens with the other floppy unit, which is an ATA floppy
(LS-120).

During the long something it does not wait on error or like, but
actually reads the floppy. Click..click...click... like when formatting
or doing a sector copy. After a while I started counting the clicks and
counted 21. So there were at least 40 clicks or more, meaning, at least
half of the floppy was read in.

2006-07-02 Thread Lapin
I have the Dell C610 with radeon 7000 graphic card and I got the same problem
(freeze) using ati and radeon drivers.
Indeed, the radeon driver is just a kind of 3d extension to ati driver. So
I changed ati/radeon to vesa and it works fine now.

Do you know if we are going to have a fix for this driver ? In dapper of
edgy ?

And for me, I'll finally buy Nvidia card for next time. I hate ati
equipment, always bad working.

[Bug 51516] Re: Kubuntu installation differs from Ubuntu -- hardware detection

2006-07-02 Thread Colin Watson

Please provide log files from the failed installation. The installer on
the text-mode install CD does *not* differ between Ubuntu and Kubuntu -
we're not just trying to trick you here.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2006-07-02 Thread DarkMageZ
(replying to Daniel Brodzik's previous comment)

hehe yeah. it's even funnier that their latest is 3-5 years obsolete,
depending on which peice of software we are talking about! even then
that code isn't particularly new... they take the old code, add afew
features, put some more polish on the user interface modify the
propriatory format just alittle so it breaks compadibility with the
previous versions!. Now you HAVE to BUY the new version if you wish to
beable to view that powerpoint presentation from your boss.

It's also funny how that they give everyone Administrator (root)
priverlages! .Then install some crummy program to lock you out of
playing with settings, installing software prevent you from using msn
messenger! Which causes Internet Explorer!!! to crash on its first run
everyday...

THEN!!!, you're sitting there with internet explorer opened (because you are
not allowed to use Firefox or Opera) and porn pop-up's keep coming up while you
are trying to do work... and even when you are NOT using internet explorer...
the applications the teachers want you to write documentation for... for an
assignment won't start because windows is corrupt... you know how to fix it
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767)
but fixing it will break collage policy, and the network administrator will be
there in 1-6 months to fix it.

(the above is a true story from just ONE year @ campus)

However, the ultimate wish is to be able to set up (or use somebody

Packaging a 6GB .deb for ut2004 is obviously impractical, not to mention

[Bug 5364] Re: Can't use static ip address with network-manager

2006-07-02 Thread Blue
... it should support both static addresses AND network profiles for mobile
users.
Further, there should be only one way to set up network interfaces
:network-admin or network manager.
As I posted on another bug report, network admin can do some things but
miserably fails at others and viceversa for network manager. This makes using
any of the tools impossible for certain setups.
The way I see this is a tool that works above the classic debian interfaces
network config system, which allows both automatic network sellection, allows
profiles, etc.
network admin and network manager on the other hand have serious shortcomings :
-NM does not know about /etc/network/interfaces - which very hard sucks.
- NM does not allow multiple network profiles
- NA knows about interfaces file which is good.
- NA knows about network profiles but is very buggy at this, and it does not
use the standard interfaces mapping scheme for profiles, which again sucks as
it can create a lot of confusions and problems.
- NA does not know about WPA (it only knows WEP ) when configuring wireless
interfaces. This again sucks, as WEP is quite buggy and WPA is used now for
secure networks.

So, for a highly (laptop) mobile user, who moves into a lot of networks, both
wired and wireless, sometimes having the same ip in two different networks (not
simultaneously, of course), sometimes using dhcp sometimes not, etc there is a
very high need for a smarter tool that :
- Will not be entirely on its own (should rely on the standard debian
infrastructure as much as possible and not try to reinvent the wheel)
- Will not be dependent on user to login or have a graphic environment to work
(think servers !)
- Will support WPA for wireless cards
-Will support multiple profiles, both wired and wireless
-will support both static and dynamic addresses.

2006-07-02 Thread bligneri
Well,

Most of the other distro support this so I wonder why it is not
supportable.

My suggestion was to look in /lib/modules/ in order to get a list of the
installed kernel. Those kernels will be found in /boot

The actual algorithm does exactly the contrary : the kernel list is obtained
from /boot but when /boot is shared it failed because the corresponding
/lib/modules/foobar can not be found.

Again, I do not understand why it is not supportable given the proposed
change is not a major one ?
