using "startx&" without creating a .xinitrc ends with the same results: my
GNOME session won't start. After a few seconds of harddisk activity the PC just
stops loading and does nothing anymore (at least as far as I can s

I think you have typed the command wrong.
The symbols around uname -r must be backticks (`) not quotes ('). The
backtick key is next to the 1 key at the top left of the keyboard.
If you still can't get it to work, try changing `uname -r` to $(uname
-r).

Almost the same for me: Auto-Raise check does not have any affect. The
check-box stays the way I put it, but auto-raise always remains enabled.

I try to use all the methods but id did not help.
Want to ask you. After I type:
sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`
then I get the message:
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-uname -r
Cannot find /lib/modules/uname -r
update-uniframes: failed for /boot/initrd.img-unam
Just an update: In Gutsy, this error is fixed. In firefox in Feisty,
Pango was enabled by default (or maybe disabled by default?).
Regardless, the default setting for Pango was switched in Gutsy and now
the vowels display correctly.

Im sorry Ive been busy I may be a bit over my head here. I crash and end

I must have made a mistake when I filed this bug. I just removed
