Version 0.20.0 adds a number of new features, as well as a significant
UI overhaul and HIG compliance work. It's in a completely usable state
despite being an alpha release.

I'll also file this upgrade request in Debian.

[Bug 181221] Re: The application unknown (nspluginviewer) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

2008-02-03 Thread Thomas Nemeth
Hi.

I just made an upgrade (friday night) which included a lot of KDE upgrades, and
since then
nspluginviewer, used from konqueror, keep on crashing each time I try to view a
flash
enabled webpage (either for videos or simple ads: phoronix, youtube, etc.).
This is perfectly
reproductible.

Firefox does not produce these crashes although it frequently makes it
impossible to have
sound output from videos.

Here is the backtrace for a crash for nspluginviewer launched from
within konqueror:

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-02-03 Thread ebird
I have made some tests on different notebooks. I have made a dist
upgrade of the 32-Bit Version of feisty and a fresh install of the
32-Bit and 64-Bit version of Gusty. The disc performance is bad. It
occurs, when an program accesses the hard drive heavily. It's not a
tracker problem. The resume process of an 512MB RAM of the virtual
machine (VMWare Workstation 6) last about 5 minutes, on Feisty about 1
minute. Sometimes the mouse freezes for two seconds on heavy disc
access.

The problem occurs on my sata and pata machine.

ThinkPad R50p - Pentium M (1,7GHz) - 2GB – PATA
ThinkPad T61p – Core2 Duo 7700 (2,4GHz) – 4 GB – SATA

On my old machine Gusty is unusable, that's why I reinstalled Feisty.
There are no problems under Feisty yet. Gusty on the new machine is like
using Vista. Gnome needs a lot of time to start and I am missing the
fast response I know from Feisty. On Gusty I starts Firefox and it takes
about 8 second before the firefox window pops up. My old Pentium M seems
to be faster (faster response) than my new machine with Gusty.

I think it's not an DMA problem, because I get good results with hdparm
-tT /dev/hda.

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 8604 MB in 1.99 seconds = 4315.53 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 136 MB in 3.01 seconds = 45.17 MB/sec

And I get good read and write results on the hard disc at 800MHz (lowest
frequency), when there is no other disc access.

sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/null bs=1M count=1000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 18,7464 Sekunden, 55,9 MB/s

dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=1M count=1000
1048576000 Bytes (1,0 GB) kopiert, 17,0126 Sekunden, 61,6 MB/s

The sync command last about one second.
I am using ext3 as file system and I don't think it's an ext3 problem, because
there aren't any problems without concurrent access.

Filesystem features: has_journal resize_inode dir_index filetype
needs_recovery sparse_super large_file
Filesystem flags: signed directory hash

I am using now the newest kernel, but same problems on all other kernels.

[Bug 188549] [NEW] Hardy a4: graphics on XPS m1330

2008-02-03 Thread Harri
Public bug reported:

Booting the alpha4 desktop CD for amd64 I just get a black screen at
boot time after the loading kernel popup and a few lines of text. Even
the background light goes off. Selecting a different text mode (e.g.
vga=771) doesn't help. There is no moving boot logo.

After a few minutes I get a popup saying Ubuntu is running in low-
graphics mode. I click on [Configure]. Model is Plugandpray, resolution
is set to 800x600 (the 1280x800 I might have selected at the boot time
is ignored). There is no 1280x800 screen to select from, either.

Next I select the Graphics Card tab, and chose the GeForce Series 8
driver. Back to the Screen tab I can select the generic 1280x800 LCD
panel now, select Widescreen monitor, and click [OK] twice. After that
I am left alone in text mode :-(.

Booting in safe graphics I just get 800x600 in vesa mode, AFAICS.

Please note that this laptop works fine with Unstable Debian, in text
mode with vga=0x318, and using either the nv or the nvidia graphics
driver for X. Kernel is 2.6.24-rc8 or newer.

[Bug 156503] Re: fast user switch applet is displayed even when there is only one user

2008-02-03 Thread Murat Güneş
Thanks for your report. Resolving this issue requires discussion on the
ubuntu-desktop mailing list [1]. Please subscribe to the list and post
there with an explanation of what you think the correct behavior should
be, and a link to this bug. Doing a search [2] to see if it's been
discussed before prior to posting is also a good idea.

[Bug 114331] Re: xserver starts but display is corrupt (i830M,845G)

Stephen Pountney, you reported a problem you're having in the comments
to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/114331. I've reported your issue upstream to the -intel
driver developers and they believe they have a fix for your problem, in
the form of a patch to xserver. Are you able to build xserver and apply
patches? If not, let me know and I can produce a patched version for
you to test next week. Please also join the discussion at the upstream
bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14066.

[Bug 188567] [NEW] [hardy] no sound with zsnes

2008-02-03 Thread Alexander Rødseth
Public bug reported:

When I used Gutsy, I switched to pulseaudio by following this guide:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup
Now I'm on a fully updated Hardy Heron.

Before version 1.51 of Zsnes, I couldn't get the sound working with pulseaudio.
Luckily, v.1.51 is in the repositories now. However, about a week ago sound
disappeared from Zsnes, after a system upgrade.

Here's my console output (I run zsnes with padsp):

[Bug 188568] [NEW] usb-storage driver should send magic command to Option Icon to reset it into serial mode

2008-02-03 Thread Martijn van de Streek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

I have an Option Icon 7.2 HSDPA USB adapter. This works great, once it
has been initialized, but initializing it is a pain. The device starts
out as a USB disk, with Windows drivers on it.

You need to send a special command to the device before it's scanned by
usb-storage (the scan crashes the firmware on the device), using a tool
like usb_modeswitch.

As a crashed device is not really useful, I think the usb-storage driver
should send that magic command to switch the device into serial mode, so
it becomes useful as soon as it's plugged in. This is already being done
for Huawei 3G cards.

A new (beta) driver from option used to contain code to send the magic,
but as usb-storage is loaded first, it takes precedence and the code in
that driver is never executed.

You can find the 0.7 driver on
http://www.pharscape.org/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,68/page,viewtopic/t,373/

The magic happens in check_ums_and_send_rezero in hso.c

Tested it on another PC and without Xulrunner it seems to work.

I cannot see any meaning with a museum version...3.0~b3~cvs20080101t1000

But maybe this has low priority ?

[Bug 188577] [NEW] -G option destroys data

2008-02-03 Thread Mark Suter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: obexftp

I expected the -G option to be safe, that is, if for some reason the file
was not successfully transfered, it would not proceed with the deletion.

The following command destroyed data when my present working directory

a file I no longer have.

obexftp -c C: -c Data -G important.txt

[Bug 188568] Re: usb-storage driver should send magic command to Option Icon to reset it into serial mode

2008-02-03 Thread Martijn van de Streek
Oh, I forgot device IDs.

When you plug it in, you get a mass storage device with vendor id 0x05c6
and product id 0x1000, and once you've sent the packet, it re-appears as
0af0:6901 (which gets picked up by the 'option' usb-serial driver)

I can provide long lsusb dumps if you need them.

I can confirm that bug on on nx6125 with BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g]

Interface does show up as wlan0_rename
But the LED on notebook is not active and that means the card is not
working/not turned on. I was unable to get it working. Ndiswrapper and bcm43xx
works (well kind of a, sometimes there are glitches so I was looking for new

[Bug 188571] [NEW] [hardy] no 3d in pdf

2008-02-03 Thread Alexander Rødseth
Public bug reported:

MeshLab is one of the projects of the month at sourceforge:
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/.
At the webpage, they have a pdf:
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/wiki/images/c/cc/Laurana.pdf
This one is supposed to have embedded 3D in the U3D-format, but I can't see any
3D in Evince, only (lau.u3d).

My first thought was, ah, they have crafted the pdf to work together
with a 3d-viewer on Windows or something, but the references to several
operating systems and cross-plattform standards and technologies on the
webage made me go: look, they have mentioned LaTeX, surely the pdf
should be viewable on Linux as well.

So, if possible, U3D in .pdf files in Evince would be fantastic. I'm not
100% sure if this is a bug or a wish, but I think it's a bug
borderlining a wish.

2008-02-03 Thread wernerroth
Hello Pedro,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
 for you? Thanks in advance.

 ** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)
Status: New = Incomplete

This is definitely a bug, when you try to upgrade a system from CD(!)
which has parts from the internet. To dist-upgrade a system from CD
which needs parts from the repositories, should give me a hint that an
additional internet download is mandatory. That's a good solution to end
with an unclear error message is very bad, because debian systems are
known for perfect dist-upgrades.

I personally moved to 7.10 online, that was my workaround. This bug
still exists on three other machines I tried it without success.

Grüße
Werner

[Bug 181561] Re: Hardy alpha 3 daily-live i386 don't boot

2008-02-03 Thread Paulo Ferro
Same problems here like Patrice's.
Only with an extra USB stick I could start (See message of Tormod Volden on
2008-01-11 above).
I have a Philips DVDR1640, and used Hardy-alpha4. Disabling DMA didn't help.
After starting with the USB stick, the dmesg contains almost no information, so
I let it fallback to BusyBox again an checked that dmesg.
My BIOS settings for my dvd-rewriter are PIO mode 4 and UDMA mode 2, but dmesg
says UDMA/3. Is that okay? Since I use a normal IDE-cable (not a UDMA cable).
