[Bug 33649] Re: root raid installs have bad grub config

2008-07-27 Thread tricky1
It is very disappointing to see that all alfas of intrepid still have
that problem. I wonder how this deeply rooted bug shall be corrected in
the few weeks remaining if currently nothing seems to be done in that
direction?

[Bug 159594] Re: Crash to white screen of death (possibly Firefox?)

2008-07-27 Thread Michael Nagel
copied over from a duplicate:

This is the same bug I reported earlier as the white screen of death:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/159594

In that report, I speculated that it might be Firefox-related, but now
I'm pretty certain that it is not related to Firefox, but is most
visible there because that's the main application I use on the afflicted
machine.

The crash usually results in a totally white screen, though I have seen
at least one case of a bar code like pattern in the lower right, and one
case where the entire display was striped with various colors. In every
case the machine is completely hosed. There is nothing to be done but
cut the power and reboot. Near as I can recall, the fan is always
running when it is in that state. I hope that is not symptomatic of any
thermal problem or related to the crash, but at least the machine hasn't
started smoking (yet).

I have not been able to find any particular stimulus that makes the
crash reproducible. However, I am fairly sure it is related to mouse
movements and that the crash can only happen when the mouse is moving.
The visible display (of the white screen) may be related to a driver
conflict, but that's also kind of speculative. However, I strongly
suspect the problem is related to window-focus problems the machine
exhibits pretty often. These are normally recoverable events, but I
suspect the crash is a case when the same root problem is not caught at
the recoverable condition, but just goes all the way to death.

The frequency of the crash is around once per day, though sometimes I
won't see it for several days, and other days there may be two of them.
I don't recall seeing more than two in a short period, but it's already
to the point where I feel I can't rely on the machine for any serious
work in Linux--it can crash at any time.

As noted in the other bug report, I'm looking for any kind of diagnostic
data or some way to make the bug reproducible.

The afflicted machine is my only Sharp running Linux, and is also the
only one with an AMD CPU. Various other distinctions, including a TV
tuner (which I'm not trying to use from the Linux side).

[Bug 252345] Ubuntu Raid implementation looks like mockery

2008-07-27 Thread tricky1
On Hardy all distros (including server!) do not correctly implement Raid
1 together with crypted partitions or lvm.

The whole installation process requires a well thought out strategy
taking into consideration that the initramfs of a degraded system might
be inappropriate and that it is not possible to create a new image
before the system is up again...

With degraded arrays it all depends on the type of raid.

For raid 1 (mirroring) the user might well decide to continue booting
(automatically or after manual confirmation?).

For other raid types this is high risk, but in some special cases might
be necessary.

See also bug Bug 33649 pending for more than 2 years.

[Bug 252415] Re: remake (and make) memory free() error

2008-07-27 Thread Philip Ashmore
Modifying debian/rules by adding "--with-dmalloc" to the ./configure
invokation and rebuilding provides an interim solution.
The package would then require libdmalloc5 (5.5.1-1) in addition for
installation.

Should I report this against the "make" package as well ?

I'll leave it to your judgement as only you will know if this is
relevant to "upstream" - in your case, "make".

[Bug 252483] [NEW] [intrepid]need restart icon of update manager, doesn't reboot

2008-07-27 Thread Philipp Meier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu 8.10
After an system update through update-manager it sometimes requires a reboot
and shows this with a little notification icon. So far so good, but I did today
recognize that if I hit it and press then reboot now(or similar, I have
installed the german version). It doesn't reboot but shows me the little logout
menu (switch user, cancel, log off). Which seems obviously wrong!

[Bug 46462] Re: RXVT not using .Xdefaults

2008-07-27 Thread Jonathan Marsden
rxvt is currently compiled to use XGetDefault().

XGetDefault() does indeed use values from ~/.Xdefaults, but only after
they are merged into the resource database.

This happens at session startup (as the original reporter apparently
discovered by accident), or you can run:

  xrdb -merge ~/.XDefaults

after editing ~/.Xdefaults, to update the resource database.

On this basis, this issue is not really a bug, simply a decision made by
the packager. So this is Invalid : NotABug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Maybe putting "setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout de -variant basic" into

[Bug 252477] [NEW] Should NOT have both kwin-3d and compriz options available by default

2008-07-27 Thread RMS-mit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic

I have installed Intrepid Alpha3 version of Kubuntu and I found the
options to enable kwin 3d desktop effects. However I also found the
ubuntu compirz setup tool in the applications list (I think under
utilities or system). This is potentially confusing as KDE4.1 should use
kwin's 3d desktop by default. If users really want compirz instead they
can install the package themselves. If they do have compirz and kwin
(say they install the gnome desktop as well as the KDE4.1 desktop) the
ubuntu compirz utility should allow for the following:-

1) Apply compirz settings only to the desktop user is currently running in (eg
if running in gnome desktop do not replace kwin in kde desktop.)
2) If applying compirz to the kde desktop make sure kwin 3d effects is disabled
and is reinstated if compirz is later turned off.
3) maybe hide compirz utility/options when running kde desktop or at least make
it clear kwin has it's own 3d effects.

[Bug 199057] Re: Add Dump patch to nethack

2008-07-27 Thread Stephen Zurcher
Hi, I checked the build sources, this patch is already included in the

to work, but that just may be user error on my part, dumps do show up in
the folder mentioned for me, though).

[Bug 252237] Re: [gnome] normal volume control useless, various race conditions

2008-07-27 Thread xtknight
I am reasonably sure this is a gstreamer problem (either that or somehow
lower down the line into alsa, but it doesn't happen in KDE so there's
something in gnome...)

Mixer applications that use snd_mixer_selem_set_playback_volume()
(alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer) never seem to experience the problem on
their own. Applications that use gst_mixer_set_volume() (gnome-
settings-daemon, gnome-volume-control) experience it excessively.

Therefore ext/alsa/gstalsamixer.c is probably the file at fault in this
source package.

If I ltrace gnome-settings-daemon and use my keyboard volume keys, the
problem is almost completely fixed. This indicates some type of timing
problem, because ltrace slows down applications by a little bit.

[Bug 252359] Re: [needs-packaging] liquibase

2008-07-27 Thread Matvey Kozhev
I think I have provided enough information for _myself_ to start
packaging it - and the upstream website certainly provides enough
information for any potential packager. Perhaps I should have assigned
it to myself from the start to make the intention clear.

I don't like canned responses - they establish a sense of detachment. In
the future, could you please specify, in your own words, what exactly is
missing, instead of using a canned response?

[Bug 252474] [NEW] Version mismatch with raw controls packet format

2008-07-27 Thread Brian May
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flightgear

Hello,

On one screen run:

fgfs --native-ctrls=socket,out,60,,5506,udp --disable-sound

On another screen on the same computer (32bit i386 Ubuntu Hardy) run:

fgfs --native-ctrls=socket,in,60,,5506,udp --fdm=null --disable-sound

This is as documented at

but without (a) sound and (b) fdm communications (both work fine).

The second screen produces this error repeatedly:

Version mismatch with raw controls packet format.
FlightGear needs version = 27 but is receiving version = 452984832

452984832 == 1B00
1B == 27

So I wonder if this is a big-endian vs little endian issue.

Doing a websearch I found which seems to imply the
problem should be fixed in the Hardy version, but it doesn't look like
it :-(.

Yes,

the problem still exists. For instance, when bullets/numbering tool bar

BTW, the problem only seems to exist when the Visual Effects are turned

[Bug 252470] [NEW] Audio noise during sound playback in Inspiron 700m

2008-07-27 Thread moschops
Public bug reported:

On my Dell Inspiron 700m with the default Intrepid alpha 3 install I get
audio noise after a user login as it plays the login sound. The noise
is overlayed with the actual audio which can still be heard albeit
somewhat obscured.

The hardware test applet says I have "I82801DBICH4" audio.

After login audio playback with Rhythmbox also has noise.

[Bug 252471] [NEW] gnome-app-install crashed with ImportError in (due to missing dpkg packages and with the impossibilty of using apt-get source, since also depending on dpkg)

2008-07-27 Thread tdflanders
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

OK, this is the first time I do it like this, so here is the deal: I
assume you have gotten my terminal log? If not, or not far enough back,
plz contact me asap, I'll be happy to reproduce. I have very limited
terminal skills, so therefore I "experiment" a lot, without taking
proper time to learn a few comments by heart. I just look up the man
pages or do a command --help, without knowing exactly what I'm doing.
Still I think I need to report this, since it doesn't make any sense. I
have lost the ability to sudo apt-get any option or file due to a
persistent lock of two dpkg directories. I found an instruction on how
to close down synaptic and so on. I did, but it didn't work, I could not
reboot due to several .torrent downloads in progress. So I did sudo rm
/var/dpkg/lock /var/dpkg/archives/lock. Previously I had tried sudo kill
-9 of everything showing up in: /dev/var $ ps . In it was gedit, man and
wvdial. I am trying to set up 3 Mobile Broandband with Mobile Connect on
Huawei E220 USB Modem. I have been kernel hacking and terminal abusing
in stupid mode = 1 | safe mode = 0 | sudo -i --no-back-up | man --no-
plan for days now. That makes it a bit difficult to trace what went
wrong. I followed some online troubleshooters and If anything I suspect:

sudo nano(or)gedit /etc/conf* and the like (+ save in graphiface)
prerelease install of virtualbox-ose-1.6.2-xxx-ubuntu_x86_deb (or something)
#I had to take a snapshot (on XP config data for IP and such), so I needed USB
support and VMWare is hardware #incompatible.
vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux + hacking in on that
huaweiAbot.ruski or something, shell scripting with gnome-ppp, wvdial, ppp0
and so on
so finally I tried to sudo apt-get build-dep setupserial since I couldn't find
the port number for /dev/ttyUSB0, which has my huawei thingy
but then I got E: could not lock */dpkg*lock - open
so I removed the */lock files
then I needed to install dpkg (I first killed all processes in /dev/var with
-9: didn't help)
oh yeah, I also did a "/dev/var/dpkg $ sudo chmod -cR 777 ." since the Sun vbox
man told me to go read README.debian in ./bridge-utilities but it's actually
called ./bridge-utils, so I did a ls bridge* in */dpkg and afterwards I forgot
I was not in a place I wanted to be, I was somewhere higher up the tree, closer
to the root. While I realized my mistake before I saw the $ prompt again, I was
just happy at the time that I could filler-roller the changelog*gz files since
previous gedit README attempts lead me to an empty page. (yes I know, I'm proud
of me too. So, they need any Windows Server admins or structured programming
teaches in Iraq?) Either way I don't know how to restore the previous
ownership settings for the directory since I don't know what they were prior to
my command.

Anyway, if this all sounds like you don't see the point in trying to
look further in to it, there are two places we can go from here:

1) You give me some diagnostical copy-paste terminal instructions to obtain
more info
2) You give me a simple instruction to reset all system files to default, which
is fine by me, since I don't recall any terminal runs bringing me closer to a
better place anyway. Plus if I'm wrong, I'll just have more fun, since I get to
improve on old themes.

Just don't ask me if I wan't fries with that again please, this is so
'un-ubuntu'. I already asked my mama and she told me she loved me but
she could not help me and then she started crying again.

Kind regards,

Thomas

[Bug 252399] Re: [intrepid] gedit error message isn't readable with new theme

2008-07-27 Thread Dylan McCall
Should this bug be filed with gedit? It does not seem feasible for the theme to
maintain exceptions for these types of popups. From the looks of it, gedit
itself is assuming dark text while arbitrarily choosing a background colour.
(That is, unless GTK has started offering a special widget for these rolldown
messages).

[Bug 219477] Re: GKSudo dialogue leaves drop shadow even when closed

2008-07-27 Thread Greg Tourville
There are a few different bug filings for this problem. From reading
through them, it may be related to nVidia, as the only reported video
cards have been nVidia. I have an nVidia 8600 with the proprietary
driver and a dual display setup, and I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu.

Switching between virtual desktops seems to get rid of the shadow
easily.

[Bug 138691] Re: system hangs at shutdown

2008-07-27 Thread Derek White
I went into recovery mode several times today to check my drive and try
it out since I've never used it before. I had no "halt:" errors this
time, just my usual "ata1.00:" errors. I tried using 'shutdown' with -r,
-h, -H, and -HF and all resulted in ata1.00 errors from recovery console
and gnome-terminal.

I just tried adding "apm power_off=1" and it made no difference. I got
the normal network messages, screen flickered to the splash screen with
a completely black bar and the devices inside my tower sounded like they
powered down immediately when the splash came up. Then it just sits
there until the "ata1.00:" error. Hence, I removed it.

To me, it seems like program 'A' powers down the HDs before program 'B'
(the one that produces the "ata1.00:" errors) is done with it. In System
> Administration > Services I have both acpid and apmd running (default
8.04 install from LiveCD). This was the same in 7.10; so, it's most
likely normal, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

I decided to write down the error and this is what happens:

...
*Unmounting temp filesystems...
*Deactivating swap...
*Unmounting local filesystems...
*Will now halt

And one more thing, I'm not sure it's essential, but it may be wise to

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance on Intel G965 system, ubuntu 8.10 alpha 3

2008-07-27 Thread Störm Poorun
I have now found a workaround for the issue.

I think it basically is to do with the upgrade from XAA to EXA
acceleration.

EXA appears not be working with the Intel GMA 965 (GM) chipset
(including the Intel X3100).

Upon editing my xorg.conf file to add references to XAA I now have
better performance, and am able to use KDE4 desktop effects.

In particular, under Section Device, I added:

Option "XaaNoPixmapCache"
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "1"
Option "DRI" "true"
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

and also

VideoRam440320
Option "XvMCSurfaces" "6"
Option "May_Need_ForceBIOS" "1"

but not sure if these last three items are necessary.

[Bug 192888] Re: firefox crashes on flash contents when using libflashsupport

2008-07-27 Thread Conn
Using nspluginwrapper is an imperfect solution. I have some good news on
the situation, but it depends on other bugs getting fixed.

I mentioned in a previous post that Flash 10 beta 2 is unstable even
without libflashsupport installed. This issue specific to the new Flash
version is not PulseAudio related, and has been identified and fixed in
Firefox upstream or our bug #239182 (and it seems will be fixed in
xulrunner 1.9.0.2).

For Intrepid, this is the situation: as soon as xulrunner is patched or
upgraded to 1.9.0.2 (bug #239182) and the proposed PulseAudio ALSA
plugin configuration in bug #198453 gets implemented, Flash v10 beta 2
will work perfectly with no random crashes as reported in this bug or
bug #239182. Furthermore, Flash will correctly use PulseAudio output
without the need for libflashsupport (note that libflashsupport needs to
remain uninstalled, as it will continue to cause problems, and the
PulseAudio ALSA plugin replaces its function).

For Hardy, we could theoretically implement the same configuration as
Intrepid, but we would need to upgrade libasound2 and libasound2-plugins
(as well as Flash), because Hardy's older ALSA pcm_pulse plugins do not
seem to forward sound properly to PulseAudio with many ALSA
applications. Fixing Hardy is not so straightforward, as the newer
libasound2 may cause regressions.

As it stands, we can easily fix this bug for Intrepid, but Hardy is more
complicated. I would argue that we should implement the necessary
changes in Intrepid for testing purposes ASAP, and consider the
feasibility of applying the same configuration for Hardy later.

Intrepid users can follow this guide and test the patched xulrunner packages to
easily implement the configuration I propose:
1. PulseAudio Fixes (distilled): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=866965
2. Patched xulrunner packages:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5472028&postcount=33

[Bug 30341] Re: Garbage character mixed displayed when viewing man pages

2008-07-27 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Under Ubuntu Hardy 8.0.4 on x86, pinfo ping looks fine to me using pinfo
0.6.9-2.

It looks as though this issue has already been fixed.

[Bug 209057] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron BETA - Sound heard through Speakers but NOT through Headphones

2008-07-27 Thread Everett Guerny
Good news: It looks like this has been fixed in Intrepid Alpha 3! And
for the first time on this laptop, plugging in headphones auto-mutes the
internal speaker. :)

Bad news: I tried playing all the audio and video files in the "Example
Content" folder, and the audio played, but had annoying, screeching,
super-glitchy-sounding noises played on top of it.

Has anyone else tried the Alpha? (grab it here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ ) Does this mirror
your experience?

What do you know. I was right!

If anyone has the time. (which I don't, sorry). the please try
to recreate this by the procedure I described in the comments above
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/235698/comments/27).
You might need to try this a few times to get it to crash.

Then try my patch (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16028112/patch1.txt)
and do the same.
