Re: [Bug 571707] Re: fsck progress stalls at boot, plymouthd/mountall eats CPU

2010-05-06 Thread Barry Drake
I've been at a conference and only had time last night to look at the
patched binaries. I installed the patched mountall, but both
libplymouth and plymouth i386 binaries that I got were faulty (looking
inside the packages, the two executables were only 20 bytes). Taking a
fresh download got the same thing.

Out of curiosity, I forced fsck on boot, and was surprised that it
worked OK.

Summary: mountall=installed && !plymouth=installed == !bug

Hi Michal,

I'll close this bug as the purpose is solved, but I'm interested you to
open a bug about the bluetooth state after resume against the kernel and
propose the patch (and copy me).

is it okay ?

(By the way, I'm looking for people to help me maintain bluez and
bluetooth related bug, if you're interested don't hesitate to give a
hand :).

thanks

@104, 105, 106 and 108 - An old political maxim is that 1 letter = 200
votes, meaning that out of 200 people who care about an issue and will
vote you in or out of parliament because of your stance/action/lack of
action on that issue, only 1 will write to you about that issue.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I am using Ubuntu 10.4 (but the problem probably exists since 7.10 at
least). I use a broadband modem to connect to the Internet, to which my
computer is connected via an ethernet (RJ45) cable.

  Steps to reproduce :
   1. Unplug ethernet cable from computer ;
   2. Turn computer on ;
   3. Boot ubuntu (2.6.32-21-generic) with acpi support enabled (ie. not
explicitly disabled) ;
   4. When logged in, plug ethernet cable into computer.

Result : the network-manager icon starts animating (to indicate
activity), and the computer hangs after less than 1 second ; there is no
response to any stimulus (except hard poweroff).

This problem also arises if I prevent Gnome, its network manager and GDM
to automatically launch and start the network manually.

- However, this problem does not arise if Ubuntu is booted with the
- options "acpi=off noacpi" added to the boot command.

[Bug 410407] Re: Clicking on items in Flash player does nothing [READ DESCRIPTION]

2010-05-06 Thread Evan Martin
I am the Chromium developer who fixed this again.

Not that anyone cares anymore, but: the problem was that Flash breaks if
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS isn't set.
The first fix was to set that in our plugin process before starting Flash.

However, GTK clears the environment variable after initializing. So
with nspluginwrapper we would set the variable, initialize GTK, and then
call into the plugin (nspluginwrapper), which would then spawn its
helper process which then would run Flash without the variable set.

So as of today's release of Chrome we set the variable, initialize GTK,
and then immediately set the variable again before calling into the
plugin.

It seems Firefox may have this second bug as well.
http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=15232 If I remember tomorrow
I will attempt to track down that bug in their bug tracker again.

[Bug 558927] Re: KMS causes hibernate to hang on "GeForce Go 6800" (Dell Inspiron 9300)

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Warren
FYI, installing package nvidia-current, and using the binary NVIDIA
driver solves this; I have hibernate/restore'd once now.

[Bug 576820] [NEW] Synaptic ignores pins in /etc/apt/preferences.d/

2010-05-06 Thread Tomasz Chrzczonowicz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a file in /etc/apt/preferences.d/ and define some pins there
2. Launch Synaptic
3. Navigate to some packages you pinned in 1.

What happens:

Synaptic acts, as if no pins were defined in 1., disregards them when
updating/installing packages.

What should happen:

Synaptic should honor pins in /etc/apt/preferences.d/

Additional info:

If you define pins the file /etc/apt/preferences, Synaptic honors them.

[Bug 498336] Re: Wireless network card stopped working with ubuntu 9.10

2010-05-06 Thread Matijs van Zuijlen
I just moved the file /lib/firmware/agere_sta_fw.bin out of the way (and
for good measure, agere_ap_fw.bin as well), reloaded the airport and
orinoco modules, and wireless is working again (using WEP).

This is on an 800 MHz iBook (G3).

The infamous eth1: Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming
still shows up, but a connection is still made.

[Bug 571242] Re: 2.30.1 stable update

2010-05-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package libsoup2.4 - 2.30.1-0ubuntu1

---
libsoup2.4 (2.30.1-0ubuntu1) lucid-proposed; urgency=low

  * New upstream version (lp: #571242):
- Fix for https through proxies that close the connection when returning a
"407 Proxy Authentication Required" response, and add a
  regression test for that case.
- Fixed multiple forms/multipart-related interoperability problems reported
  by Egon Andersen:
- Don't quote the multipart boundary string if it's not needed, since
RFC 2616 recommends that you don't, and some servers don't handle quotes
  there correctly. (Sigh.)
- Don't put an extra blank line before the first multipart part, since it's
unnecessary and some servers don't handle a multipart preamble correctly.
- Don't put Content-Transfer-Encoding headers in
the multipart/form-data parts, even though the HTML 4 spec says you must,
since no other browsers do, and some servers don't handle them correctly.
- Changed SoupCookieJarSqlite to actually erase deleted
  cookies from the database.
- Fixed SoupLogger to be more robust against getting passed bad data
   by the session.
- Fixed SoupAuthDomain to ignore paths when doing proxy auth
- Fixed a g_warning when hovering over a javascript link in WebKit
  * debian/libsoup2.4-1.symbols:
- new version update
  * debian/rules:
- copied new Debian soname computation code to fix build issue
- updated shlib version

[Bug 576816] [NEW] ddd source package doesn't list all required build dependencies

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ddd

I ran "sudo apt-get build-dep ddd", then grabbed the ddd source code

[Bug 544741] Re: [X700] KMS, amd64: Kernel panic while trying to launch system > preferences > appearance

2010-05-06 Thread Torbjørn Sund
After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 i386 my system freezes when changing
users. Had no problems with 9.10. Have applied all system updates.

System: Acer Travelmate 3222, 2GB, external display HP L1720 @1280x1024. Video
ATI Radeon Mobility X700.
Symptoms:
- 1. Sluggish display (could it be the change from nv to nouveau display
driver?)
- 2. Consistently upon "Change user" the display goes blank except for cursor
and sometimes noise in lower part. Possible to switch to login terminal and
back (ctrl-alt-f1/f7), but only once, when repeated system freezes.
Solution:
Reboot.

I will provide more information on request, but I am not a Linux expert.

[Bug 576813] [NEW] Ubuntu Lucid x64 in VirtualBox - Network Device Bug

2010-05-06 Thread Kevin
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

Fresh installation of Ubuntu Lucid x64 in VirtualBox 3.1.6 using bridged
networking and VirtualBox's Intel PRO virtual device, the device seems
to work properly until trying to install/upgrade software. See this
forum thread for details:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472340

Apparently, the network device corrupts "certain" files that are being
downloaded...changing the VirtualBox virtual device to AMD PCNET-FAST
III solves the problem.

Please investigate the cause of the Intel network driver failure.

[Bug 553498] Re: Dell Studio 1558 (Arrandale) hangs on resume from suspend

2010-05-06 Thread gavin
I have been so frustrated with my Dell Latitude D430's inability to
suspend (bug 474949 and many others if you do a search on Dell Suspend)
I thought I would give this new kernel 2.6.32-22.34 a go because the
problems with the Dell Studio described above seem so similar to mine.
Alas, the kernel install fine but the suspend problem will Dell Latitude
D430's still exists. I love the new Lucid environment but a notebook
without suspend on lid close is very frustrating

No, direct download is not possible too. The error is something like "the

I tried the download from my other pc (windows) and the download was successful.

[Bug 476817] Re: [i855] [i855] [karmic] X freezes with intel 855GM videocard

2010-05-06 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I can also confirm that the ppa kernel works for me in Lucid, while
without it I can't boot my old laptop.

My card is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02)

2.6.32-20.30 => Last one that boots, crashes with Xv
2.6.32-21.32 => It hangs when X starts
2.6.32-22.33 => It hangs when X starts
2.6.34rc3-51.2 => Works fine with KMS and Xv and everything.
One minor glitch, I'm sometimes seeing a black square over the Xv video (e.g.
on totem but not on vlc), covering all of the video. In totem, when I open a
menu and close it, that black square goes where the menu was. And when I switch
to fullscreen it goes away so I can see the video normally. (for more details
see my posts in bug #511001)

Please backport that newest patch for Lucid. :)

Re: [Bug 575602] Re: Connecting with BBC Radio 4 unavailable

Draycen

Again my thanks for your additional information.

Attempted to listen to 07:00 news to be denied yet again. As usual I was
using the link on the BBC News page. Went to the Today home page with
the same result.

Opened up my mail and and found your post which worked. That at least
is minimal progress.

The obvious question is what ever happened to working just out of the
box. To have FF so badly underperform is not acceptable! Why are we
being foisted with this miserable browser.

I hope that you and others can please work your magic in order that
normal service can be resumed.

Again my thanks

Ian

[Bug 576811] [NEW] firefox is very slow in Ubuntu 10.10

2010-05-06 Thread AlmaTlust
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Since I've updated (actually I did a clean install, but copied my home folder
back), firefox is much slower than any other browser I installed (konqueror,
rekonq, chromium), which is sad because it's the one displaying most pages
best...
I can't give any further information right now but am willing to help if told
how.
Cheers,
Martin

Is that so? OK, they'll never fix it :) now i can clearly see that
They just simply can not or do not want to resolve the problem.
Doesn't matter now anyway because my little PR200X is broken... maybe I'll have

I really love Ubuntu and all the developers but that was (and still is) a

[Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

2010-05-06 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
Thank you for the tip Willem, with that kernel I'm also able to boot with KMS
on and Xv and everything.
I only noticed a small glitch, in Xv sometimes (e.g. in totem, but not with
fullscreen nor in vlc) there's a black overlay over the video. And if I click
on a totem menu, and then I close the totem menu, the black overlay is left
where the menu was.

Anyway, it's very workable with that kernel, thanks again.

[Bug 562092] Re: [Lucid] cdrom drive not recognized automatically

2010-05-06 Thread Marcus K
Sometimes I see the DVD drive, sometimes I don't. When I see the drive,
everything works fine until the next boot, including playing movies. I don't
know exactly what is making it disappear.
The udev version I have installed is 151-12, Ubuntu 10.04, and here is my dvdrw
information, which I only see when my drive is detected: product: DVD+-RW
GH50N; vendor: HL-DT-ST.

My workaround is to boot in recovery mode, and then "Proceed with normal
boot". It looks like the drive is always detected when I do that. I end
up at the terminal prompt. To open gnome, I login and type "startx".

[Bug 570589] Re: Lucid: Overheating due to no PM for ATI KMS

2010-05-06 Thread ngc2997
I definitely agree with Richard - I'd also rate this bug highly
important, especially with the fact in mind that for ATI cards the
xserver-xorg-video-ati driver is used by default on a fresh installation
(correct me if I am wrong here). Also consider this might perhaps lead
to increasing reports about dying video cards and eventually to bad
publicity for the entire distribution. I might be a bit too concerned
here, but I wonder how long a card may actually survive when permanently
running on temperatures around 80°C (when idle, that is).

Due to fglrx not supporting KMS and introducing a severe memory leak
with compositing enabled, I switched back to the free driver just
yesterday, but chose to revert that, as I am heavily concerned about the
lifetime of my video card (HD4350, passive / heatsink) when using the
free driver with the temperature being significantly (!) higher.

2010-05-06 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi James,

The warning reported here typically indicates that it took longer for
your system to resume from suspend than expected. I believe there is a
5 sec barrier which your system likely exceeded. Based on your dmesg
output I see PM: resume devices took 17.420 seconds. I'm setting this
to traiged for further investigation. Thanks!

[Bug 505494] Re: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart

Yes, after trying around I found out the same thing!

For example, when I click on the App Launcher in the taskbar, the mouse
will not actually work in the applauncher unless I right-click on the
symbol or anywhere in the taskbar again..

Quite annoying! I really hope there will be a patch for this because I
actually was still in the process of switching to Ubuntu and now I find
myself going back to Windows which is so slow!

[Bug 574157] Re: Right click on graph'ed obj locks ddd/Ubuntu

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Warren
FYI, I think this is upstream bug http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?28247
However, I can't add that as a bug watch to Launchpad, since Launchpad
doesn't know about the ddd upstream project.

FYI, a partial workaround is to left double-click on items you want to
expand. This appears to do what right-click "Display" would do. However,
that doesn't allow access to all the other actions that are on the
right-click menu.

[Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Warren
petter wahlman (comment #44), I suspect your bug is different; with ddd,
there's a very specific and reproducible way to make this happen. That
issue is covered by bug 574157. My quick reading of the rest of this bug
is that it's something that happens randomly to people whilst not doing
anything specific and/or repeatable.

This only happens when I use a password-less login.

[Bug 574157] Re: Right click on graph'ed obj locks ddd/Ubuntu

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Warren
I'm affected by this too. Just to be explicit, here are repro steps:

g++ -ggdb -Wall -Werror -o bug1 bug1.cpp # I'll attach that in a second
ddd ./bug1
View Menu -> ensure" Data Window" is checked
b alter_list
r
# wait for breakpoint to be hit
In ddd source window, right-click on the "list" parameter to function
alter_list(), and select "Display list"
Now, go to the data window, right-click on the graphic view of "list". ddd will
hang, and mouse will be grabbed into the data window.

Note: You can recover from this without killing X by:
CTRL-ALT-F2 to switch to a text console
Log in
kill `pidof ddd`
CTRL-ALT-F<> to switch back to X
