The settings were moved to gsettings as this was easier for packages to
override them. The easiest way to set the defaults is to make an
override file in /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/, e.g. unity-
greeter.override:

draw-grid=false
Then run:
sudo glib-compile-schemas
I don't know what the problem is, but it should work if you change it as

I forgot to confirm that it was fixed (a long time ago) by a kernel
update.
