[Bug 1448617] [NEW] Useless error message

2015-04-26 Thread Michael Kanis
Public bug reported:

The dialog states in the first section This feature can't be enabled
because the necessary packages are not installed.

This message is completely useless, because it leaves me completely in
the dark what the actual problem is and how I can resolve it. It should
instead provide a button to install whatever the system is missing or at
least name the packages that I need to install manually. (It's probably
samba, *I* know how to fix this)

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled
the xorg-edgers-ppa. This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains
different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu. The page,
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa, contains details on to
how to revert to the official Xorg packages. Thanks.

messages appears to be related to systemd, although probably is not due
to exactly the same bug reported there.

It does appear that you are running systemd on 14.10. This is not a
supported configuration in 14.10, because systemd was only partially
supported by certain key services (such as the rpc stack). So we can't
provide support for an upgrade failure caused by running systemd on
14.10.

[Bug 1340115] Re: Black squares appear for 1-2 sec. on almost the whole screen and then disappear.

2015-04-26 Thread Salih114
I updated my BIOS. Nothing changed. The black squares still appear for a
second in large distances. It is not a huge problem but something seems
to be wrong. Could it have to do with the cpu scaler (I use energy
saving for the most of the time.)

[Bug 1040873] Re: [N56VZ, Realtek ALC663, Black Headphone Out, Right] No sound at all: Subwoofer not working

2015-04-26 Thread sami
Hi,

I just tried Ubuntu 15.04 which embeeds pulse audio 6.0.
In the sound settings panel, I can switch to 2.1 profile, and within test
panel, everything works just fine : Left, right and subwoofer.

*But* when I launch any sound application, there is no sound through subwoofer.
I tried Gnome videos, vlc and firefox.
Is there something wrong with the applications?

I think this is weird because if the application outputs stereo tracks, then
pulse/alsa should be able to generate a subwoofer track (mix+lowpass) and then
output 2.1.
Am I wrong?
Any configuration test I should try?

[Bug 1447600] Re: 15.04 installer hangs in partitoner during something else

2015-04-26 Thread Obi1Kenobi
Same problem here. Basically I cannot install Kubuntu 15.04. Same
symptom: installer hangs at 33% while preparing the ext4 file system. I
currently have KUbuntu 14.10 and was trying to format the root partition
and put 15.04 instead. Noticed that the installer didn't actually do any
changes to that partition as was able to boot 14.10 without a hitch
after my failed installation attempt. So apparently it doesn't write
anything on selected root partition while being stuck at 33%.

Hope this helps and you fix it soon so we can all install 15.04.

Thank you.

[Bug 1368402]

2015-04-26 Thread Main-haarp
My bet is that since GTK3 applications use smooth scrolling
(http://who-t.blogspot.de/2011/09/whats-new-in-xi-21-smooth-
scrolling.html), they listen to different scroll events than the
(correctly-inverted) GTK2-based ones.

Public bug reported:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu

Codename: vivid
AMD64

To reproduce this bug please checkout the following. Open a video in
Youtube, have a look in Browser at the url and sharing url below the
video. It is beautiful short and can be spread easy through several

[Bug 1431743] Re: fails to boot due to read-ony file system

2015-04-26 Thread ironstorm
This should be reopened.

This is a potentially serious regression that broke on my machine
upgrading from 14.10 to 15.04. The way in which it broke left me
looking at a shell that told me despite my FS being mounted rw
according to mount, all commands were failing because of Read-only
file system.

It is in no way intuitive why it happens, nor the solution that adding
an entry to /etc/fstab for the root would fix it, given that that fstab
entry was not required in 14.10 and prior.

I'm fortunate enough to be experienced enough to find this report and
execute follow the steps, many non-power/novice users will not be.

This issue could have been avoided altogether by implementing a post-
install check that examines the fstab and corrects the issue or at least
notifies the user to correct the issue before rebooting.

[Bug 1366418] Re: Bluetooth BCM43142A0 doesn’t work

2015-04-26 Thread Pilot6
@Mark,

1. Asus drivers are buit a way that you do not see separate firmware files.
2. To determine which hex file to use, you need to look into inf file. Find
your adapter VID PID and match it to hex file. Then convert it to hcd.

It is a shame that Broadcom does not give license to distribute that
firmware. I think about making a ppa with all these files, but it is not
quite legal.

[Bug 1448586] Re: package rpcbind 0.2.1-6ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2015-04-26 Thread Steve Langasek
The output in your log is:

such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)
Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Could not connect: No
such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)
Failed to stop rpcbind.service: Transaction order is cyclic. See system logs
for details.
invoke-rc.d: initscript rpcbind, action stop failed.

According to this bug report,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89289 the first of these
messages appears to be related to systemd, although probably is not due
to exactly the same bug reported there.

It does appear that you are running systemd on 14.10. This is not a
supported configuration in 14.10, because systemd was only partially
supported by certain key services (such as the rpc stack). So we can't
provide support for an upgrade failure caused by running systemd on
14.10.

[Bug 1448678] [NEW] ntfs3g -s option should be ignored, making autofs mounts failing

2015-04-26 Thread Georg Grabler
Public bug reported:

I've troubled some with mounting ntfs-3g file systems with autofs.

AutoFS passes the sloppy option (-s) to mounts, which is actually a
valid thing since mount is to behave on all filesystems the same option-
whise. Though, the ntfs-3g filesystem does not support it, and fails on
it, which it should not. This is in my opinion a misbehaviour of
mount.ntfs3g, because it should just ignore the option and NOT exit.

I've troubled some with mounting ntfs-3g file systems with autofs.

[Bug 1448220] Re: package sgml-base 1.26+nmu4ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2015-04-26 Thread Mike Fisher
The error message (see attachment DpkgTerminalLog.txt) says:

cannot open /var/lib/sgml-base/supercatalog.new for writing: No such
file or directory at /usr/sbin/update-catalog line 312.

ls /var/lib shows that /var/lib/sgml-base does not exist. Fixing this
manually (sudo mkdir /var/lib/sgml-base) and then running sudo apt-get
upgrade fixes the problem and sets up sgml-base and the packages that
depend on it.

2015-04-26 Thread Torsten Curdt
Seeing the very same thing here on a server install.

I consider severity quite high because I was trying to secure a new server
installation with PasswordAuthentication no.
Only by accident I found that the sshd did not accept the new configuration
and was still wide open with password authentication.

This is pretty bad.

[Bug 1448677] Re: kde plasma5 crashes on login

2015-04-26 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1448677/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you

[Bug 1448704] [NEW] Usb-creator should use -vga std (or -vga vmware) option on QEMU-KVM launch (Test Disk) for better compatibility with modern versions of Ubuntu

2015-04-26 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
   1. Launch usb-creator-gtk (for example from Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS)
   2. Choose iso-image to create LiveUSB (12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 14.10, 15.04)
   3. Press Make Startup Disk
   4. LiveUSB was created (Installation Complete window)
   5. Pressed Test Disk
   6. Got error message in QEMU window (gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image) - it
is known bug 1325801 , enter live here
7a. Boot to corrupted desktop (12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 14.10 ) - it is bug
1080674
7b. Boot to failsafe mode (15.04) - it is bug 1437740

EXPECTED RESULTS:
usb-creator-gtk is compatible with modern versions of Ubuntu, user can boot
and test new versions of Ubuntu in it.

ACTUAL RESULTS:
usb-creator-gtk launch kvm without -vga option, guest system does not work
with full graphics performance. User is disappointed.

FIX:
Developers can choose between two solutions - fix the problem on distro-side
(in QEMU-KVM guest system), or pass -vga std (or -vga vmware) to kvm
command on execution of Test Disk procedure.

NOTES:
I prepared google docs table (
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WsjQ8nz3b6dhYGdM3xxkdxZHp27j9ggvrRPcZbm9Cao/edit?usp=sharing
) for better understanding the problem with screenshots.

[Bug 1448234] Re: after upgrade from ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04 I can't download subtitles anymore

2015-04-26 Thread Mondane
Thank you, I've found the option to download the subtitles indeed in
full screen.

About that menu in full screen, I did saw the option 'Subtitles' with a
right pointing arrow. Since I'm used that hovering above such an item,
automatically opens the submenu whoch didn't happen, I believed there
were no subitems. After really clicking on 'Subtitles', the menu was
changed with a new submenu.

This makes me wonder if the change in interface is done for touch
devices. In those situations, the new interface makes sence.

So the bug report should be changed to something like 'Menu options
missing in the global menu' and perhaps a new bug report should be made
to address the 'no submenu on hovering the fullscreen menu items'.

Do you agree?

[Bug 1447224] Re: Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-04-26 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, I read about restoring subtitle functionality by switching to
fullscreen in #1448234, which gave me an idea. There is nothing wrong
with totem or vlc. Yet again its Ubuntu's appmenu that botches up
applications. After uninstalling appmenu everything works as expected.

[Bug 1446027] Re: SNA acceleration causes sudden shutdowns and corrupts CMOS data on the the Asus UX21E ultrabook on a wide variety of kernels since at least Ubuntu 14.04

2015-04-26 Thread Simon
Right now, I'm downloading http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current
/vivid-desktop-amd64.iso and soon will be posting the apport-collect
reports: one during operation above the vendor-induced custom throttle
threshold and another after it kicks in.

On Friday, I contacted ASUS for a third time and a couple of hours ago
they replied via e-mail that the battery was replaced on my second visit
to their customer support center, although their tests revealed no
defect in the previous battery or any other hardware component. So now
I'm 200% sure it's not a hardware fault.

Overnight I tested with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (with the appropriate
drivers and Asus Hybrid Engine software downloaded from the official
support website) In Windows 7, everything works all right. In Windows
8.1 the shutdowns follow exactly the same pattern as in Ubuntu: once the
battery charge approaches 7000 mW, the CPU is forcibly throttled down to
800 MHz. If there's a combination of Flash Player running and an above-
than-average power consumption, a shutdown happens. If the CPU
successfully throttles to 800 MHz without shutting down, everything
continues to work as expected regardless of further CPU load or overall
power consumption.

Another important thing I discovered is that the backlight level does
not contribute to the probability of shutdown, although all other power-
related Windows options do. Windows 8.1 is much more susceptible to the
issue than Ubuntu is. Again, much like in Ubuntu, once there was a
shutdown, CMOS data becomes compromised and further shutdowns follow in
a totally chaotic fashion until I detach the BIOS battery from the
motherboard for a few minutes.

I spent hours looking through the manuals but wasn't able to discover a
kernel boot flag or something that would ward off any attempts by the
BIOS to override the current CPU frequency set by the CPU governor. It
appears that this custom throttling mechanism is masquerading as the one
activated when CPU becomes critically overheated, so both Windows and
Ubuntu see no fault and have to comply.

Now I understand this is clearly not a fault of Ubuntu, but still cross
my fingers for someone who has the knowledge to create a more
streamlined, trusted workaround than the one I'm currently using.

Even though the original issue here is supposed to be fixed, I still see
a similar problem when attempting to start glhack in Ubuntu 15.04. I was
also able to reproduce this in Debian Sid, so I have filed a follow-up
issue https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=783376

[Bug 1448694] [NEW] Black screen on Guvcview

2015-04-26 Thread Rex Bouwense
Public bug reported:

I have Lubuntu 14.04.2 installed on an ASUS EeePC 1000h. The installed
default program for the internal camera is Guvcview (1.7.1-1). All I
can get in the way of output is a black screen. I had Lubuntu 14.10 and
now 15.04 installed on another partition on the same computer and
Guvcview works perfectly in those versions. I reinstalled Guvcview and
there was no change in the output. I installed Cheese to make sure that
there wasn't a problem with the hardware and using cheese I can take a
picture and video without a problem. Is there a problem with Guvcview
working in Linux kernel 3.16? Guvcview does work with the Linux kernel
3.19 in Lubuntu 15.04.
