However, running Ubuntu on these systems is not supported. It's true that
Linux 3.4 is currently the baseline kernel for Ubuntu userspace because that
was the kernel used in various Android BSPs for Ubuntu Phone enablement, but
that is not a requirement going forward. There's no expectation of
compatibility between Ubuntu userspace and arbitrary third-party SoC
kernels, and even if there were, this is a very niche use case
(kerberos-authenticated NFS clients) and it's been agreed that the bug is in
the kernel. We shouldn't feel obligated to carry a workaround for a bug in
kernels we don't ship.

I don't think this is a requirement at all. This is a non-default option,
and the removal of the option will happen only as part of a release upgrade,
the point at which the behavior of the system with regard to config handling
is not expected to remain consistent. I would say that at most, this should
be a Debian.NEWS entry.

I'm ok to sponsor this as-is for now, but could you please follow through
with a plan for removal of the patch?

[Bug 1012521] Re: Installer Crashed while trying to install grub on /dev/sdb (usb memory stick which live installation CD)

2017-08-06 Thread Mischa
Maybe this should be an enhancement request then. I don't want to touch
my hard disk. And if the live CD ISO can boot from a USB stick, why
can't Ubuntu itself not launch from an USB stick?

Also, if it is not supported, why can I select this option in the
installer as if it is supported?

Other people seem to have been successful with installing the boot loader on
the USB stick in the past:

BTW: When I read the original bug more carefully it looks like someone is

[Bug 844582] Re: "Invalid argument" when trying to scan

2017-08-06 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Please do not suggest to install third-party packages, even if from the
upstream developper. It is a very bad idea in almost all situations.
The real problem is how to distinguish those situations from the ones
where it might be OK (for the ordinary user). Thus, the normal user
should stick to the official packages. We need to get rid of the
impulse to install random stuff from the internet to quickly "fix" a
problem.

[Bug 1613264] Re: Virt-manager Spice console not working

2017-08-06 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi,
thanks for the ping I didn't see the bug before.
For me things worked right out of the box, but I could reproduce by
uninstalling the gir1 package that was mentioned before.
Therefore I can somewhat confirm the issue but IMHO it is not that much a bug,
let me explain why.

I went back and checked why it worked for me out of the box and the
package was installed at first and it was driven by correct
dependencies.

$ aptitude why gir1.2-spice-client-gtk-3.0 --show-summary
Packages requiring gir1.2-spice-client-gtk-3.0:
  virt-manager

So the packaging already has a valid dependency to make this work.
Since many or rather most common virt-manager tasks work I think "recommends"
is the right dependency in general.

We would need to check why you had it not installed, as by default recommends
are installed.
Maybe you had the packages from the image which can leave out some recommends
to keep image size down?

Therefore I wanted to ask how you installed virt-manager?
- was it without recommends intentionally then this is not really a bug
- did it come from other dependencies, images, ... and missed to install the
recommends than we should understand and solve that.

Setting incomplete until we know how you got virt-manager without the
recommended gir1 package.

sunxi.org/Linux_Kernel#Kernel_versions

Dropping the patch can also cause failure on systems passing -e as an
option thus we may need to keep the -e option at least as a noop for
some time.

Because of the reasons above I kept the patch for the merge and I think
it would be reasonable to keep it.

[Bug 1708995] [NEW] [Hyper-V] netvsc: fix rtnl deadlock on unregister of vf

2017-08-06 Thread Joshua R. Poulson
Public bug reported:

This is a deadlock fix for functionality introduced with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+bug/1708469 which
applies to lts-xenial and linux-azure

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/davem/net-
next.git/commit/?id=fb84af8a4397ee664a51c2da1dd64fb3d582ee24

With new transparent VF support, it is possible to get a deadlock
when some of the deferred work is running and the unregister_vf
is trying to cancel the work element. The solution is to use
trylock and reschedule (similar to bonding and team device)

[Bug 1708292] Re: Please merge nfs-utils 1:1.3.4-2.1 (main) from debian unstable (main)

2017-08-06 Thread Steve Langasek
Based on the linked Debian discussion (LP: #794112 -> Debian bug
#648155), I believe that patch 20-ticket-expired-error.patch is
irrelevant for Ubuntu releases beyond 12.04 because this behavior was
fixed upstream in the kernel in commit
eb96d5c97b0825d542e9c4ba5e0a22b519355166 present in kernel 3.10 and
later. Do you agree with this conclusion, and should we drop the patch?

(I'm not sure that this warrants keeping around the non-upstreamed
option to gssd for compatibility)

Otherwise this LGTM.

[Bug 1510731] Re: Can't use crypto in manual disk setup Kubuntu 15.10

2017-08-06 Thread GizmoChicken
I can confirm this bug exists in the latest daily build of Kubuntu 17.10
amd64 (downloaded 2017-08-06), both when installing onto a newer UEFI
system and when installing onto an older BIOS system.

This bug also exist in the latest build of KDE NEON User Edition, which
seems to use the same, or very similar, variant of Ubiquity.

I haven't tested the latest daily build of Ubuntu, but I can confirm
that this bug does NOT exist in Ubuntu 16.04.3 or Ubuntu 17.04.

Moreover, this bug does NOT exist in the latest daily build of Ubuntu
MATE 17.10 amd64 (downloaded 2017-08-06), and does NOT exist in the
latest daily build of Ubuntu Budgie 17.10 amd64 (downloaded 2017-08-06).

Note that Artemgy mentions that bug exists in Lubuntu Next 17.10 amd64,
and that Lubuntu Next 17.10 derives its variant of Ubiquity from

[Bug 1708828] Re: Trackpad tap does not work in GDM

2017-08-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Low priority. I agree having a configuration that works for all personal
preferences on the login screen would be best.

However forcing the user to click on a clickpad that is designed to be
physically clicked is not a significant restriction.

[Bug 1604750] Re: Byobu not clearing update numbers after updates

2017-08-06 Thread James Sinton
@mckub1 I've been running the proposed fix for Ubuntu for about 7 months
now. I've only seen it fail to update the updates_available value once
during an upgrade. The failure with the proposed fix was running under a
virtual instance of Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016), which
screamed through an upgrade. However, I have not seen such a failure
since, and clearing the cache manually always fixes it.

In general, this issue requires a special race condition to reproduce,
since some system configuration are not experiencing it. My older
server, which runs on a quad-core AMD Phenom II, was the first to
exhibit the issue of failing to update the updates_available value.

[Bug 1604750] Re: Byobu not clearing update numbers after updates

2017-08-06 Thread Mark Kelly
After a few weeks of use, I have to say the fix -

[ "/var/lib/apt" -nt "$mycache" ] || [ "/var/lib/apt/lists" -nt
"$mycache" ] || [ "/var/log/dpkg.log" -nt "$mycache" ]

to the /usr/lib/byobu/updates_available script has worked well for me on two
different systems (both Ubuntu 16.04 with HWE).
After an apt-get upgrade the notification is sometimes still there - but
hitting a few F5's (boybu status updates) or waiting until the status update
runs again always clears the notification.

Until you solve it you don't need to reboot, you can simply remove the
cache file to clear the notification with -

rm $BYOBU_RUN_DIR/cache.tmux/updates-available

[Bug 1706818] Re: mismatched file locking since 1:4.2.8p4+dfsg-3ubuntu1 causes race leaving ntp dead on reboot

2017-08-06 Thread Paul Gear
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1593907 was recently
released to fix ntp/ntpdate interactions; if they're still broken, there
seems little need to justify this given that precedent. (Full
disclosure: I want ntp/ntpdate interactions solid so I can use ntpdate
in the ntp charm. :-)

[Bug 1708972] [NEW] Distribution Upgrade icon stuck in Launcher with no window after running

2017-08-06 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

When running Software Updater, I started getting the messy, unclear,
mostly nonsensical error message that says "Some of the updates couldn't
be installed bla bla bla. This could be due to any of the following
reasons" (1. you tell me exactly which one; 2. some of them don't even
make sense) and I was given the options "Continue" (continue what?) or
"Do a partial upgrade" (with no explanation of what a partial upgrade
is). That dialog is a complete disaster in the first place.

Anyway, the second time I got this shitty dialog that doesn't explain
what has happened and gives no clue about what to do, I chose "Do a
partial upgrade", whatever the f**k that means.

When prompted I clicked "ok", "continue" or whatever.

After a few hours, when that had been long finished, I noticed that I couldn't
suspend the computer. Suspend just does nothing (no error message either).
Then I noticed that there was this "?" icon in the Launcher. When rolling over
it, the tooltip says "Distribution Upgrade". When clicking on it, no window
shows up or gets focus.

Even in the Alt-Tab list of supposedly open windows, there is one with
the same "?" icon, and clicking on it does nothing.

So, it seems that the Distribution Upgrade is somehow not responding, and also
the window manager and/or Launcher are fundamentally broken if they allow an
application to have an active and selected icon in Launcher (and in the Alt+Tab
menu) without a corresponding window: that's an inconsistency that shouldn't be
possible no matter how broken and buggy an application is.

Upgrading stuff is one of the most delicate moments when you most need
the system to be absolutely rock-solid, yet it's almost when Ubuntu is
most unreliable.

I can confirm this issue in Ubuntu Mate 17.10 Alpha 2. However on my

released, rather the HUD will not launch when Chromium, Firefox, or

[Bug 1708971] [NEW] libceres-dev needs rebuild because of mismatching eigen version

2017-08-06 Thread Mikael Arguedas
Public bug reported:

Current version of ceres ("1.12.0+dfsg0-1") was built against eigen 3.3.0.
Current libeigen-dev version is 3.3.2 (3.3.2-1).
So ceres needs a rebuild otherwise packages cannot link against it getting the
following cmake error
```
CMake Error at /usr/lib/cmake/ceres/CeresConfig.cmake:88 (message):
  Failed to find Ceres - Found Eigen dependency, but the version of Eigen
  found (3.3.2) does not exactly match the version of Eigen Ceres was
  compiled with (3.3.0).  This can cause subtle bugs by triggering violations
  of the One Definition Rule.  See the Wikipedia article
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Definition_Rule for more details
```

For reference the debian build (1.12.0+dfsg0-1+b2) solves the problem

[Bug 1638842] Re: network-manager does not manage ethernet and bluetooth interfaces when Ubuntu 16.10 is installed using chroot/netboot method

2017-08-06 Thread Forceflow
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1676547 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1676547

Installed 17.04 using minimal server install CD, wanted to use
networkmanager to manage my interfaces, encountered this pesky bug. I
had removed any mention of my wired interface in
/etc/network/interfaces, and still it wouldn't show up in
NetworkManager.

If this is supposed to be default behavior, I do not approve. It is
confusing and pretty hard to fix if you don't have the slightest idea
where to look.

[Bug 1454306] Re: apt-btrfs-snapshot supported reports "Sorry, your system lacks support for the snapshot feature" since update of btrfs-tools to 4.0-2 in debian/testing

2017-08-06 Thread cpatrick08
This needs to be fixed in Xenial as the package in xenial-proposed fixes
the problem. This problem should not exist but especially the current
LTS release. Fix it please or explain why you won't fix it.
