Hi Steve,

is the firmware from #9 fixed the issue?
So far, we don't sure if the firmware crashing the root cause of your issue, so
KC separated it to LP: #1933755. And firmware from #9 helps LP: #1933755 (see
LP: #1933755 comment #2)

2021-07-06 Thread Alex Tu
Hi Steve, my comment #12 is saying the firmware in #9 works on the
machine in certification lab, so that HWE is doing a SRU [1] to land
that firmware.

But that firmware seems not to work for your case(refer to your comment
#10 which I missed when commenting #9).

Could you please also provide your dmesg again when for the issue after
you applied the firmware from #9 or from [1]

[Bug 1923150] Re: unexpected error pop-up after 'apt install nvidia-driver-455'

2021-04-18 Thread Alex Tu
It seems still an issue if a user installed Focal by 20.04.1 before then
he buy and then plug-in a new Nvidia card to his PC then install nvidia
driver. The user will still get this error.

The version(2.0.4) of fixed apt not in focal-security, so user not
updated apt manually will still get the problem.

[Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]

2021-07-14 Thread Alex Tu
progress update:
 - Vicamo is SRUing related firmware for both oem 5.10, hwe 5.11 and oem 5.13.
   - for OEM 5.10, HWE 5.11:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1934217
   - for OEM 5.13:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1933415

@Steve,
per #17, the firmware for OEM 5.10(LP: #1934217) not works for you.
Could you please have a try on OEM 5.13 + firmware from LP: #1933415?

The firmware crashing looks not happens to every machine using AX201.
 - Vicamo can not reproduce it with wifi6 AP during both SRU (LP: #1934217 and
LP: 1933415)
 - It passed with OEM 5.10 + firmware(LP: #1934217)
 - But it failed with OEM 5.10 + firmware(LP: #1934217) on Steve's machine (per
#17)

So, we are asking Intel for a suggested combination of Kernel and
firmware to make sure the stability of AX201.

2021-07-14 Thread Alex Tu
sorry for confusing, let me break down the steps:
1. # Add PPA from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1933415/comments/2
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vicamo/linux-firmware-staging

2. # to get linux-firmware from Vicamo's PPA
$ sudo apt-get install linux-firmware

3. # to install OEM 5.13
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-oem-20.04c

4. # reboot, and make sure you are running under oem kernel 5.13
$ uanme -r
5.13.0-1007-oem

5. # check if the target firmware `-63` loaded
$ dmesg  | grep iwlwifi
iwlwifi :00:14.3: loaded firmware version 63.c04f3485.0
QuZ-a0-hr-b0-63.ucode op_mode iwlmvm

6. # check if the wifi issue can still be reproduced.
- if it is there, please also attach the dmesg here.

@Zorro, We can not reproduce the AX201 wifi crashing issue with new
firmware #9 + kernel 5.10.0-1037-oem on the machine XPS 13 TGL in the

Could you please check if this issue can be reproduced on other XPS 13

Hi Steve,
Looks launchpad does not forward the updated comment through mail.
I updated step 3 because of OEM kernel 5.13 is only in focal-proposed now:

3. # to install OEM 5.13
# Please manually click on Pre-released updates(focal-proposed) in
`Software & Updates` UI first.
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-oem-20.04c

[8.920438] iwlwifi :48:00.0: loaded firmware version 59.601f3a66.0
cc-a0-59.ucode op_mode iwlmvm

Looks both boot time (pass and failed) are using the same version of
iwlwifi firmware.

Compare to linux-firmware 1.199 and 1.198:
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/commit/?h=impish&id=19185cb1aeb67563dd18f00963f388ceaaa29fcd

looks the only firmware change related to iwlwifi is this one:
+- iwlwifi: add ty firmware from Core63-43

But there is a bluetooth firmware change for Intel AX200 which not sure will it
impact the wifi module on the same chip(after all, the firmware is blackbox
binary from IHV):
+- linux-firmware: Update firmware file for Intel Bluetooth AX200

Could you please add one of the 2 firmware manually to check if the
issue can be reproduced?

[Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]

2021-07-25 Thread Alex Tu
Hi Harrison,
Intel used to ask users using the latest proprietary firmware from upstream[1].
The proprietary firmware is a blackbox in opensource, so we are trying to
figure out the stable combination of kernel and related firmware.

So far there are 2 kernel flavors verified works in the environment of #27 in
Focal:
1. HWE kernel 5.11 + latest firmware iwlwifi-QuZ-a0-hr-b0-59.ucode (you can try
it from the linux-firmware from #21 which is doing SRU)
2. OEM kernel 5.13 + latest firmware -63 (you can try it from the
linux-firmware from #21 which is doing SRU)

We did not check the latest mainline kernel[2] + latest upstream
firmware [1] because so far the above 2 works well in our WIFI AX
environment.

We are wondering if any difference from the Steve's environment and
yours keep the Intel proprietary firmware crashing.

Could you please check if the above 2 kernel flavors plus the linux-firmware
doing SRUing work on your environment?
If it still failed, could you please share with us the dmesg and lspci (better
to get sosreport as well) and which WIFI 6 AP you are connecting to? So that we
can try reproducing your issue here :)

[Bug 1799389] Re: not use /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml by default

2018-10-23 Thread Alex Tu
Hi srinivas-pandruvada,
It's a workaround to update man to avoid confusing, but not really help the
case which user would like to correct the behavior without change in BIOS.

So, I propose to rename original /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml to
/etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.template then change the code of thermald
to read /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml first and fall back to
/var/run/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.auto if /etc/thermald/thermal-
conf.xml is not there.

welcome any idea.

@Stephan,
Could you please try upgrade system to see if this issue can be fixed?
$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade -y

[Bug 1818881] Re: ath10k_pci crashing

2019-04-02 Thread Alex Tu
shared more information from Stephan,
"
so just to be clear, I often times am able to stay on 5 hours on a Meet with no
problem
then it just starts happening and I can't seem to get out of it
"

and the machine is also plugged AC power while meeting.

I also followed the way to test google hangout video call + youtube
playing over 6 hours on the same environment of #24 which the XPS 13 I
have, but no luck to reproduce that here so far.

[Bug 1855825] Re: When connecting to wifi with the proposed linux-oem kernel , the system hangs

2019-12-11 Thread Alex Tu
on machine 9380
this issue happens to oem kernel 4.15.0-1065-oem + linux-firmware 1.173.13
while the wifi failed, a workaround operation can be done to take wifi back.
steps:

1. remove the problematic firmware manually
$ sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode $HOME

2. reload the iwlwifi
$ sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi; sudo modprobe -r iwlwifi

Then wifi works well.

[Bug 1865838] [NEW] no error popup while exceed maximal fingerprint retry during login

2020-03-03 Thread Alex Tu
Public bug reported:

from journalctl, gdm-fingerprint shows error there after retried 5 times
of fingerprint login failed, so I open this issue here.

Steps to reproduce issue:
1. enroll fingerprint for your right index finger.
2. logout
3. login and try login by incorrect finger e.g. middle finger
4. after 5 times retry. There's no error popup, then re-try index finger still
no any message remind users they can not try fingerprint anymore.

It will confuse user.

Suggest behavior:
 1. Each time user try fingerprint failed, show error message to remind user.
 2. When user exceed 5 time errors, show error message to remind user input
password instead.

[Bug 1865845] [NEW] no fingerprint enrolling progress information

2020-03-03 Thread Alex Tu
Public bug reported:

there is no progress information shows to user while enrolling fingerprint.
It might confuse user thinking it as freeze failure.

steps:
1. enroll fingerprint in gnome-control-center
2. click 'Next' on the enrolling page
3. There is no message tell user that it need at least 12 times touching
fingerprint.
4. user press fingerprint for 5 times, there is no way to cancel enrolling.
5. user wait for timeout and get error message for timeout notification.
6. after 5. user page of setting will always failed and show no user found.

So, the suggestion would be:
1. remind user to press 12 times on fingerprint for step 3.
2. show the progress during user pressing fingerprint for step 4.

And this also introduce some critical issue of step 6 that user page in
settings failed forever.

[Bug 1865845] Re: No UI indication for fingerprint enrolling progress

2020-03-04 Thread Alex Tu
I just also verified on Lenovo X230 with fingerprint device 147e:2020
the UI indication for fingerprint enrolling progress looks good.
So, I'm wondering if the issue is caused by private built IHV proprietary
driver + libfprintd pkgs.
I will check it again while get the latest IHV driver which built with latest
V1.90.1+tod1.

[Bug 1693756] Re: [Xenial][ DW5816e] to support qmi over mbim which needed for FCC authentication.

2017-06-25 Thread Alex Tu
Hi Sebastien,
Thanks for your review, there are some reasons to take the bumping version
patch.

1. to verify which patches in libqmi is needed , it need a known worked
modemmanager and libmbim (yakkety version) help, and there are version
check both in configure and build dependency.

2. looks the bumping version action was took by upstream when a big
change like this qmi-over-mbim. So, people might expect qmi-over-mbim
should not be there before such version. So, I was confused about should
I keep the bumped version there to keep this expectation synced.

All patches were picked up by git bisect method in the environment setting of
point 1, then install all backported packages together for a sanity check in
final.
And the decision to keep the version bumping was made based on point 2.

In another side about why not just take whole new version:
by roughly diff of libqmi,
changed no. of lines of backport patches to xenial libqmi-glib1-1.12.6-1
1791

changed no. of lines of xenial libqmi-glib1-1.12.6-1 to yakkety libqmi 1.16.0-1
142332

And just taking new version would introduce more changes in libmbim and
modemmanager which not related to qmi-over-mbim for DW5816 by just take
yakkety libqmi 1.16.0-1.

So, the idea is fewer changes might have higher SRU possibility.

[Bug 1693756] Re: [Xenial][ DW5816e] to support qmi over mbim which needed for FCC authentication.

2017-06-25 Thread Alex Tu
this is the PPA that I used to test backported packages:
https://launchpad.net/~alextu/+archive/ubuntu/test

 * libmbim - 1.12.2-2ubuntu1oem1:
https://launchpad.net/~alextu/+archive/ubuntu/test/+sourcepub/7925248/+listing-archive-extra

 *  libqmi - 1.12.6-1ubuntu1oem2:
https://launchpad.net/~alextu/+archive/ubuntu/test/+sourcepub/7925734/+listing-archive-extra

 * modemmanager - 1.4.12-1ubuntu1oem4:
https://launchpad.net/~alextu/+archive/ubuntu/test/+sourcepub/7927789/+listing-archive-extra

BTW, there is a patch [1]which released to oem but not SRU yet, is it
suitable to SRU it together or we should to SRU it one by one?

[Bug 1693756] Re: [Xenial][ DW5816e] to support qmi over mbim which needed for FCC authentication.

2017-06-26 Thread Alex Tu
followed #15, also sum things up here for expected package version
change and share libs version change:

libmbim-glib4_1.12.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
libmbim-glib4_1.12.2-2ubuntu1oem1_amd64.deb
 * libmbim-glib.so.4.1.0 - > libmbim-glib.so.4.1.0

libmbim-proxy_1.12.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb -> libmbim-
proxy_1.12.2-2ubuntu1oem1_amd64.deb

libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1_amd64.deb -> libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb
 * libqmi-glib.so.1.3.0 -> libqmi-glib.so.5.0.0

libqmi-proxy_1.12.6-1_amd64.deb -> libqmi-
proxy_1.12.6-1ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb

libmm-glib0_1.4.12-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
libmm-glib0_1.4.12-1ubuntu1oem4_amd64.deb
 * libmm-glib.so.0.2.0 -> libmm-glib.so.0.2.0

modemmanager_1.4.12-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
modemmanager_1.4.12-1ubuntu1oem4_amd64.deb

--
For the libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb, I plan to change it's
version to libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1oem2_amd64.deb[1] so that, it could be upgrade
when SRU package (1_1.12.6-1ubuntu1) ready.

-
And for the old existes patch which mentioned in #15, I created another ppa[1]
to host them and they are planned to be included in oem image candidate:

[Bug 1667198] Re: gpu-manager should also support using custom xorg.conf files for Nvidia

2017-06-27 Thread Alex Tu
with ubuntu-drivers-common 1:0.4.17.3,
verified /usr/share/gpu-manager.d/hybrid-performance on "Inspiron 15 7000
Gaming" which has Nvidia VGA controller [10de:1c8c], the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file was replaced by /usr/share/gpu-manager.d/hybrid-performance as expected.

2017-07-04 Thread Alex Tu
refer to versioning rule of libtool[1], there are some versioning changes added.
And this version is the candidate to be took into oem image.
The candidate binary packages could also be found in this ppa[1]

So, sum things up here again:

[The changes packages and it's .so version]
libmbim-glib4_1.12.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
libmbim-glib4_1.12.2-2ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb
 * libmbim-glib.so.4.1.0 - > libmbim-glib.so.4.1.1

libmbim-proxy_1.12.2-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
libmbim-proxy_1.12.2-2ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb

libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1_amd64.deb ->
libqmi-glib1_1.12.6-1oem1_amd64.deb
 * libqmi-glib.so.1.3.0 -> libqmi-glib.so.1.4.0

libqmi-proxy_1.12.6-1_amd64.deb ->
libqmi-proxy_1.12.6-1oem1_amd64.deb

libmm-glib0_1.4.12-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb ->
libmm-glib0_1.4.12-1ubuntu1oem2_amd64.deb
 * libmm-glib.so.0.2.0 -> libmm-glib.so.0.2.0

[Bug 1725190] Re: Please update modemmanager in xenial to the 1.6 series

2017-12-07 Thread Alex Tu
not experienced modemmanager-qt while backporting qmi over mbim for xenial
before. (LP: #1693756)
btw, I also tried just adding zesty ppa in xenial to install
modem-manager/libqmi/libmbim, it also works well with DW5811 and DW5816.

And it seems only one package for modemmanager-qt called "modemmanager-qt-dev":
modemmanager-qt-dev - Qt wrapper for ModemManager - devel files

So, we might need to check what the error message for ABI-check tests to
understand how is the impaction.

don't know what's the difference between #10 and LP: #1731873 #4 for version
1:0.4.17.4 in Xenial,
#9 and LP: #1731873 #3 for version 1:0.4.22.2 in zesty.

[Bug 1737915] [NEW] apply the changed microphone mute key scan code.

2017-12-13 Thread Alex Tu
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
A change was landed in dell-wmi.ko which extend scan code of microphone mute
from 0x150 to 0x100150, so that we need to add the mapping as well.

related commit:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/5012

also affects:
LP: #1736352

[Test Case]
1. install the new udev package.
2. press "microphone mute" key from laptop keyboard.
3. microphone should be muted.

[Regression Potential]
low, because this patch is to add a key instead of replace it.

2017-12-19 Thread Alex Tu
This issue happens to all xenial, zesty dell platform users who updated
kernel to the one after 4.8.0. Because the root cause is the change of
dell-wmi kernel module [1]

And this is a cert blocking issue for OEM projects.
How long will this kind SRU be in your experience ?
