[Bug 60639] Edgy know 2 - Installer does not detect disk partitions

2006-09-15 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop, It has a single SATA disk, with
existing NTFS and FAT32 partitions and lots of free space.

When I boot with my Edgy Knot 2 liveCD and launch the graphical installer, the
disk is detected but not any of my existing partitions. The installer shows an
empty, non partioned, totally unallocated disk.

Curiously, if I launch Nautilius via Places Computer, my NTFS and
FAT32 volume labels are shown!!

I tried launching the installer in text mode: exactly the same problem.
I am disappointed with this, I didn't expect to run into this issue.

I also tried a Dapper 6.06.1 liveCD, same results. I hoped that Edgy
would fix the problem but so far it didn't. The problem is a bit
frustrating, I can't afford wiping the existing partitions.

Thanks!

[Bug 60639] Re: Edgy know 2 - Installer does not detect disk partitions

2006-09-16 Thread Ari
Today I tried booting the laptop with Knoppix 5.0.1 (kernel 2.6.17);
same results: Knoppix desktop shows icons for all my existing
partitions; but when I try to install it to the hard disk, the
partitioner (qtparted) does not detect any existing partition, and shows
the disk as fully unallocated. This looks like lack of support for this
type of disk at the kernel level. :(

[Bug 69184] gedit error Could not create a backup file when trying to save a file in a VFAT partition

2006-10-29 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I have an edgy (final) fresh install. It detected and mounts on boot my
FAT32 drive that I share with windows.

I can create and delete files in this partition with no problems with
all applications including gedit itself.

The problem is, when I try to save the new file again (or to save a file
just opened and modified), gedit always gives me an error message:

Could not create a backup file while saving
/home/ariel/Desktop/MyFolder/mynewtextfile.txt

It looks like the backup filename has something in it that is not
supported in a vfat partition, or there is some problem with the way
ubuntu sets the default permissions

In any case, this is annoying. It happened to me previously with Dapper
in another machine. Hopefully this can get fixed soon!

Note: being a vfat partition, the user:group is set now set to root:root
(initially, the group was plugdev but I changed that to see if it fixed my
problem; it didn't help at all).

My current fstab entry is:

UUID=d5628904-b3cf-4aaa-ae5b-5adb62952fbd
/media/sda6 vfatiocharset=utf8,umask=000,user0 0

[Bug 69184] Re: gedit error Could not create a backup file when trying to save a file in a VFAT partition

2006-10-31 Thread Ari
Hi Constantine, first thanks a lot for your quick response!

On umask: It doesn't look like that option will accept a user number...
it seems to be a permission mask for filesystems that don't support
builtin unix permissions

 umask: octal file permissions

You can change permissions using the parameter umask. But be aware that
it must be the bitmask of permissions that are not present for the
mountpoint. It is an octal number, formed like this:

* character '0': Indicates that this is an octal number, not decimal.
* first digit: owner user permissions
* second digit: owner group permissions
* third digit: world permissions (every other user on the system)

[Bug 156831] Re: VMWare Server and Compiz Fusion do not play nice

2007-10-26 Thread Ari
Exact same problem here but with plain Ubuntu 7.10, and vmware
workstation 6.02 build 59824.

When I try to go to full screen mode in vmware, the gnome-panel stays
on, and the vmware fullscreen is shifted and shows up below the
panel, which makes the bottom part of the vmware fullscreen to go off-
screen... including the windows taskbar.

In non-exclusive mode, on ctrl-alt, vmware shows the small control
bar... below gnome-panel, which is weird.

doing metacity --replace and then going full screen with vmware goes
fine.

maybe there is some workaround/setting we are missing in compiz-fusion?

[Bug 157837] BMPx nautilus integration: Open with BMPx: Play files doesn't play anything

2007-10-27 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 7.10 fresh install.

In Nautilus, right clicking on a folder that contains mp3 files, or
right clicking in an mp3 file itself, and selecting Open with BMPx:
Play files will open BMPx but the files will not be played, nor
enqueued nor anything, they are just ignored.

The nautilus option Open with BMPx: Enqueue files likewise doesn't
enqueue anything in bmpx, it just opens it.

Hope there is some sort of workaround, because I was starting to like
bmpx.

[Bug 157854] After scanning, xsane display of image in FullScreen (default) does not play well with Compiz

2007-10-27 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

After scanning, by default, xsane displays the image attempting to do
some sort of maximized mode that does not play well with Compiz; it
overlaps the gnome panel and offers no way of resizing the output
window, which is very unfriendly to newbies. Some composite-based apps
like AWN still display windows on top of it (so if xsane was attempting
a Full Screen mode then something is wrong with it).

This can be fixed by doing xsane Preferences Setup Display uncheck
Main Window Size Fixed

I think this was an unfortunate default choice; this is with Ubuntu
7.10; previous releases didn't have this problem.

[Bug 204960] Re: [Hardy] Lirc devinput (linux-input-layer) broken

2008-10-25 Thread Ari
Hi Fastguy, this bug workaround is specifically for SAA7134-based
cards, and it is only about LIRC being unable to grab the device,
because HAL did it earlier.

In any case, whatever the chipset you have, you may be having a driver
problem, or a lirc misconfig (since you seem to have the basics
working). Really this does not seem related to this bug. Suggest you
open a new bug, or better, first ask around in #lirc and in the forums.

[Bug 204785] [NEW] Hardy: When moving a Window with ALT-F7, the window sticks to the mouse pointer an is never released

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta (first official beta), clean install.

I am using nvidia-glx-new and normal desktop effects (ubuntu defaults,
with no tweakings)

When moving a Window with ALT-F7, the window sticks to the mouse pointer
an is never released regardless of right/left/both clicks with the
mouse.

The only way to un-stick the window is pressing enter in the keyboard.

[Bug 204826] [NEW] Hardy - After rIght click on folders and opening with application, the selected app is not remembered

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

In gutsy and edgy, after doing the above, every time I right clicked on

[Bug 204826] Re: Hardy - After rIght click on folders and opening with application, the selected app is not remembered

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Yes this is from a clean (blank) Hardy beta install.

There is something weird going on.

This is on Folders only. First thing I did, was the Open with other
app on one of my audio folders. I selected audacious, audacious opened,
all right.

Now the Open with audacious was not showing up in Nautilus' context
menu. Reboots and all, still not showing, I had to use open with other
app menu every time.

Now per your suggestion above, I tried adding a second app: VLC. Did the
Open with other app on my folder and selected VLC. VLC opened.

Again, the Open with VLC has NOT been added to nautilus context menu
for folders. BUT now Audacious shows up!!

What I also notice is that if I right click on a folder and do
Properties, then Open With, I can see both Audacious and VLC listed.
However only audacious shows up in the context menu.

Looks like the latest additon to the Open With menu is lost in the
context menu.

[Bug 204903] [NEW] Hardy: vlc shows an animated sound volume bar in the main gui window

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy latest Beta, default VLC installation.

Launching VLC, the main window shows up as usual, with the volume
control on the top right with a bar indicating the set volume level.

Now this bar shows the funky animation that progress bars show in Hardy.
It does not make a lot of sense for a volume level set and it is
distracting for a desktop.

I believe this is a bug that slipped by.

[Bug 204933] [NEW] [Hardy] Cuesheet plugin is broken

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta (updated as of today). clean install.

Audacious plugins include cuesheet, which has been automatically
activated.

However, it does not work. Opening a .cue fails, and opening a folder
that has a .cue in it doesn't play it.

I verified this with .cue's that refer to .flac files (supported by
default) and also .ape (I added the plugin, which works fine (I can open

[Bug 204960] [NEW] [Hardy] Lirc devinput (linux-input-layer) broken

2008-03-21 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta1. Clean install.

I have an SAA7134-based board with a remote control that I've been using
for long with LIRC, before hardy. Now it seems support for this type of
devices is broken.

This is the info:

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

I: Bus=0001 Vendor=185b Product=c100 Version=0001
N: Name=saa7134 IR (Compro VideoMate TV
P: Phys=pci-:05:01.0/ir0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:1e.0/:05:01.0/input/input6
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd event6
B: EV=13
B: KEY=108c0222 2110801 0 0 19080006801 e1680 ffc

You can see
My hardware.conf is attached. I'll also attach lircd.conf.
I noticed that hardware.conf format has changed, and adapted my configuration
accordingly.

After reboot irw stays mute, it doesn't get any remote keypress.

Doing /etc/init.d/lirc stop; and then launching lircd in non-daemon mode
gives me (I'm connecting to lircd with irw):

$ sudo lircd -n --driver=dev/input --device=/dev/input/event6
lircd-0.8.3pre1[10361]: you should specify a valid gap value
lircd-0.8.3pre1[10361]: lircd(userspace) ready
lircd-0.8.3pre1[10361]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.8.3pre1[10361]: initializing '/dev/input/event6'
lircd-0.8.3pre1[10361]: can't get exclusive access to events comming from
`/dev/input/event6' interface

Then, nothing happens. The terminal that is on focus will get numeric
keys from the remote (because this is a linux-input-layer type device),
which also happened in gutsy. But in gutsy, lircd trapped those events
and processed them, and sent them to the connected lirc clients (e.g.
irw).

BTW, those number keypresses I get in the terminals demonstrate that my
hardware and the remote are fine, and also that the kernel module looks
good as well.

2008-03-22 Thread Ari
Just confirmed: the problem is specific to the Folder type. Regular
files do not have this problem.

I think the difference haso do with the fact that folders always at
least one Open With action (if you right click on a folder
Properties Open With, you can see it, it's Open Folder) and this
default action does not change, double clicking in a folder always opens
the folder.

[Bug 205344] [NEW] [Hardy] Menu bar has a color problem - selected item unreadable

2008-03-22 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta, acroread from ubuntu repos.

The application runs OK. The menu bar now blends more or less well with
GTK2 however there is a glitch with the currently selected item in the

[Bug 205353] [NEW] [Hard] HP PSC 1200 Combo scanner not detected by XSANE

2008-03-22 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta, clean install.

HP PSC 1200 combo printer/scanner. The printer side works fine.

When I fire up xsane, it doesn't detect it. It attempts to scan from
my TV tuner card.

In 7.10, xsane gave me an option when started, as of which scanner to
use (the PSC 1200 or the TV card). In hardy, there is no option, it uses
the TV Card without asking, and I can't find the way to force it to scan

[Bug 205717] [NEW] [Hardy] S/Pdif / digital output not available in pulseaudio

2008-03-23 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hardy beta, clean install.

ALSA sees the integrated sound card in my system and its analog and
digital outputs, with no problem:

 aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

However, pulseaudio is only using the Analog output.
Also, pavucontrol only shows the analog output device (ALC883 Analog).

I think this is a bug, there seems to be no way to have pulseaudio
output to the digital (s/pdif / ie958) sink.

This: http://www.pulseaudio.org/ticket/139
may have something to do with this.
 I followed the instructions:
   - added the following line to /etc/pulse/default.pa:
   load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,1 ## Card 0,
Device 1
   - Kill and restart the audio server:
   pulseaudio -k
   pulseaudio -D

Now the digital output shows up in pavucontrol, and the applications
that use pulse also use the digital output. All this shouldn't be
needed (output to digital by default) or at least an easier digital
output activation is necessary.

Thanks

[Bug 204960] Re: [Hardy] Lirc devinput (linux-input-layer) broken

2008-03-24 Thread Ari
I'm surprised. Are you aware of what could have changed with respect to
Gutsy / 2.6.22 and previous kernels/hald's?

This remote has been working perfectly on linux for a couple of years...
SAA7134-based boards are very popular out there.

A few questions, Is there a reason why LIRC's has to lock the device?
Should I open a bug against LIRC?
Do you think all 2.6.24-based distros will have this same problem?

I'm not a programmer but I'm willing to help / test / investigate as
much as I can.

[Bug 212342] [NEW] 2.6.24-15-generic kernel freezes during boot when loading manual modules

2008-04-05 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

After the update to 2.6.24-15, the system can not complete the boot up

Usplash freezes at about 20% completeness, then disappears and the boot
meessages are displayed. The last one shows Loading manual modules or
something very similar.

I can still boot the system with the previous 2.6.24-14 kernel with no
problem.

The only non-official package installed in this system is VirtualBox
non-OSE (amd64 version). Which works fine in hardy beta 2.6.24-14 and

[Bug 212946] [NEW] Mouse wheel zoom in/out not working

2008-04-06 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

gThumb 2.10.x reportedly restored the zoom in/out behaviour controlled
by the mouse wheel.

Ubuntu Hardy version of it (as of today) still implements the old
annoying mouse wheel behaviour (Next/Previous picture controlled by the
wheel) that was changed in 2.10 due to massive user complaints.

This is a request for the ubuntu gthumb package to do zoom in/out by
default, as intended by the application devs.

Below are the release notes for gthumb 2.10 where the new behavior is
stated (the highlighting is mine)

___

Version 2.10 is now available at:

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gthumb/2.10/

* gthumb-2.10.8.tar.gz
* gthumb-2.10.8.tar.bz2

This is a major new release, with new features not available in the 2.8
series. The following is the list of the major new features of the 2.10
series:

* Added support for displaying remote locations.
* Added red-eye removal tool.
* Added a filter bar, to limit displayed images.
* Added thumbnailing and player-launching for videos and audio files.
* Added programmable hotkeys.
* Added the ability to manually specify photo print sizes.
* Added a zoom-to-width mode.
* Added sort by comment and sort by Exif DateTime tag.
* Adds support for multiple auto-detected cameras, or multiple modes for
single cameras.
* Enhancements to the crop dialog: added undo/redo support; allow to crop
multiple times without exiting the dialog; allow to switch on/off the selection
mask;

/
zoom in/out with mouse wheel;

zoom keeping the center of the image visible.
* Allows file extension to be changed when bulk-renaming.
* Added reset Exif orientation tag tool.
* New re-size options in web exporter to allow equal landscape and portrait
image sizes.

For a detailed list of the new features and bugfixes see here.

2008-04-08 Thread Ari
Hi, if you installed Hardy a while ago, this a known problem already
fixed in new installations.

This is the bug:

[Bug 206097] [NEW] [Hardy] System freeze during shutdown with an empty screen with gnome's background image

2008-03-24 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta clean install.

System freezes during shutdown, after closing all applications and the
panel, it leaves me with an empty screen with gnome's background image
and stays there forever.

If I kill X (ctrl-alt-backspace) then shutdown proceeds and terminates.

Also if I shutdown from a console (ctrl-alt-f2, shutdown -h now) it
works.

The problem is reproducible 100% of the time. It has been happening
since my initial Beta install, and the daily updates have not fixed it.

This is with Hardy _AMD64, NVIDIA 8600 with nvidia-glx-new and compiz,
setup using Desktop effects with no extra tweakings.

Not really sure if this is a gnome problem or an X problem.

[Bug 206288] [NEW] [hardy] Mplayer plugin opens a new window instead of embedding itself in firefox 3; also it can't recover from full screen

2008-03-24 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy beta clean install. Firefox 3 beta4.

Removed Totem plugin, installed mozilla-mplayer form the official hardy
repo. The installed version shows up as 3.50-1ubuntu2

If you navitate to http://www.cbc.ca, in the right of the page you will
see a frame with a video label. If you click on the play button, a new
small window pops up with the video content, which plays back OK.
However the video content should play back embedded in the page.

Ubuntu 7.10 and earlier worked fine in this regard, the videos from
cbc.ca actually are embedded in the page (same as in windows IE).

Further, if in the small window you click the full screen icon (bottom
right), the video will go full screen as expected; if in full screen
mode you click again in the same icon, instead of the video returning to
the embedded page video (or to the small window per the above bug), the
video window disappears but the audio keeps playing back. Totally weird.

[Bug 207523] [NEW] Problems to playing back mms stream

2008-03-26 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta updated as of today.

VLC has problems playing back this stream:

mms://lared.wms.sinectis.com.ar/laredam910

Audio starts and stops every two seconds. On the same platform, Mplayer

[Bug 211908] [NEW] Audacious 1.5 new Monkey plugin not working with some .ape files

2008-04-04 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacious

In the past I used audacious 1.3.x and 1.4.x with the un-official mac
plugin (from here: http://www.netswarm.net/) audacious-mac-0.3.10, I
never had a problem with it, it can play all my .ape files.

With audacious 1.5's new mac plugin, some files refuse to play, the
player just stays idle with no error message. De-activating the new

the new plugin can be fixed.

[Bug 204960] Re: [Hardy] Lirc devinput (linux-input-layer) broken

2008-04-08 Thread Ari
Yes, I know I am way too lazy.

So after a little research I came up with a workaround and now my remote
is back alive.

Following laga's suggestion, you need to put the attached remote.fdi
file in /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/20thirdparty/

Also you need to modify the file to match your remote. In the line that
reads:

match key=info.product string=saa7134 IR (Compro VideoMate TV

...replace the string content with the string corresponding to your device
(mine is a Compro videomate card).
You can find the proper string to put there by doing:

lshal ~/hal-output.txt

gedit ~/hal-output.txt

...and then search for saa7134 IR. To confirm, under the same key you should
see in hal's output a line that looks like
input.device = '/dev/input/event6'
(your event number may be different). That was the problem, HAL was locking
that device that LIRC needed to use.

videos, and from reading the above I don't understand what the
workaround is. Can someone clarify how to fix this?

 - Upgraded a perfectly working Edgy to Gutsy, then the problems with the
colors while playing movies started
 - Using the intel driver
 - problems occur in all video players I use (vlc totem)
 - problems occur regardless of the desktop effects setting

TIA

totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945
have horrible colour/gamma)

[Bug 155047] Re: gparted hangs Scanning all Devices forever (because of /dev/fd0)

2007-11-22 Thread Ari
Just confirmed that disabling the floppy from the bios (there is no
physical floppy in my system) fixed the problem

[Bug 59060] Re: Invest applet renders incorrectly

2007-12-07 Thread Ari
just to confirm that the invest applet is still broken and nonfunctional
under 7.10. Not only it doesn't do anything (it can't be set up, no
context menu, no preferences), there is also no way to uninstall it
other than the workarounds discussed above.

looks like this applet has been been broker for a year or two. sad gnome
doesn't provide an option to monitor stocks. most of us don't care a lot
about this but it's important for the average joe. Also I guess ubuntu
shouldn't ship badly broken applets as this discourages new users.
