files back into .config later. Nothing else I tried worked after

When upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 the following error was reported:
Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop'
It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a
bug using 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

It's upgrading now on a slow 3G connection. The only problem was that
the same error message appeared briefly in a notification box, but

Wow, this bugginess is still around in 16.04. Today after a minor
upgrade this offer to change folders came up. I initially declined the
offer but when it persisted I accepted and my Download folder with 13 GB
of data disappeared - poof - and was replaced with an empty Download

I'm having significant problems with LibreOffice Write with kernel
4.4.0-66, but not with 64. The program won't allow text to be
highlighted and locks up one core of my CPU. A graceful shutdown of
Write is not allowed and even Ubuntu won't shut down without a manual
switch off.

Upgrading to kernel 3.8.0-32-generic actually made this problem much
worse, but last night's auto-upgrade including the error reporting
software (apport, python files, etc.) along with the Intel 9xx and 8xx
driver upgrade, etc. seems to have solved this. Thanks.

After installing updated Intel graphics drivers the display problems
with kernels 3.8.0-35 and 3.8.0-34 in 13.04 are gone. Perhaps the
kernel developers used newer drivers than those in 13.04 for creating
new kernels, but those drivers are not part of the auto-update that
includes the kernels. K
Chris, the original issue of black screens has not occured in Trusty,
which has other issues, such as the false gpu hang mentioned earlier and
just now a freeze during startup. Should I file other such bug reports
as they occur, or will that be confusing?

necessary even if a system is stable in Windows, which this system is.

version for Raring - 3.9.0-030900rc8 - the video problem again is gone.
On UbuntuForums this kernel had good reviews, especially regarding the
way it fixes Intel video problems on laptops, so it seems to have done

than 3.8.0-35 or 3.8.0-34 but is not perfect. Occasionally the laptop
screen will go blank, though the monitor remains normal.
I've asked a friend in a nearby city to download the Trusty daily. In
the meantime I'm using 3.8.0-
ASUS K55A laptop with an i7 3630QM CPU having Intel HD
4000 on-chip graphics.
I can help with some technical detective work to help solve this
problem, but due to a slow EDGE Inet connection kernel bisections are
not feasible.

Observed:
Immediately after a system update last week that included going from kernel
xxx.25 to xxx.26 the video became unstable. At start-up the cursor will blink
in the upper left corner and won't respond
Might be worth noting that this is a dual-boot system with Win8. The
GRUB start-up screen comes up reliably but when the laptop has no
monitor connected the default boot into Ubuntu fails with a perpetual
blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the laptop screen. When the
