[Bug 1878617] Re: Apple pages file type should be added to MIME types

2022-05-19 Thread David D Lowe
A fix was released upstream in shared-mime-info 2.2 (2022-03-27). Sadly,
this didn't make it to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

[Bug 1741074]

2022-01-22 Thread David D Lowe
This bug report is getting triaged, I'm glad. I'll add that Ubuntu 22.04
LTS is planning on removing Firefox from the APT repositories altogether
and to only provide the snap version of Firefox, which is Ubuntu's
default browser, so this bug is going to be experienced by a large
fraction of the Ubuntu userbase at some point.

[Bug 1741074]

2021-10-20 Thread David D Lowe
This bug is also being tracked at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1741074

Ubuntu 21.10 ships the snap version of Firefox by default, (instead of
the APT version), so we can expect more users to experience this bug.

[Bug 1947579] [NEW] GNOME Shell integration doesn't work with snap version of Firefox

2021-10-18 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 21.10, the default installation has been switched from the
version provided by APT, to the version provided by snap. Users that
upgrade from Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10 will be migrated to the snap version
of Firefox.

In the snap version of Firefox, it is impossible to install extensions
from https://extensions.gnome.org . This error message is displayed:

> Although GNOME Shell integration extension is running, native host
connector is not detected. Refer documentation for instructions about
installing connector.

Installing chrome-gnome-shell does not fix this issue.

I'm not sure where to file this bug report exactly, but I thought I
would file it here.

[Bug 1906476] Re: PANIC at zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init() // VERIFY(0 == sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, >z_sa_hdl)) failed

2021-10-16 Thread David D Lowe
I installed Ubuntu 21.10 system with ZFS and encryption, and I installed
all APT updates. I quickly started experiencing filesystem corruption
within an hour or two, and now my system won't boot. I see that this bug
has been marked "Fix Released", but I am still experiencing it.

Even before the bug fix is released, I urge the developers to take
urgent preventative measures to stop users from experiencing filesystem
corruption, especially users who are upgrading, since they have more
data to lose. Specifically, I ask you to take these three actions:

1. Make the upgrade tool refuse to upgrade to Ubuntu 21.10 if ZFS is
being used, until a permanent fix is released.

2. If possible, don't allow users to install a fresh installation of
Ubuntu 21.10 with ZFS enabled. I don't know if it's possible to release
a new ISO, but please consider that it might be worth releasing a
21.10.01 ISO.

3. The release notes for Ubuntu 21.10 do contain warnings about
filesystem corruption when using ZFS, but you have to read 2800 words
before reaching the paragraph that warns about this. Please consider
modify the release notes to make this warning more prominent. Also,
modify any other web pages that users might check before installing
Ubuntu 21.10 or upgrading to it.

2021-10-16 Thread David D Lowe
I've also gotten bitten by this. Upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 caused weird
filesystem issues to be present on my ZFS filesystem, with errors on the
command-line such as:

Cannot access 'foobar': No such file or directory

When running ls -l in some directory, I get question marks, like this:

-? ? ???? enum_binary_params.hpp
-? ? ???? enum.hpp

I tried to select the "revert" option in the Grub boot menu to go back to
Ubuntu 21.04, and that worked.

I then tried to install a fresh installation of Ubuntu 21.10 from a USB
stick, selecting the ZFS option with encryption, and I am getting these
errors again.

I only noticed now this note in the release notes:

> The version of the ZFS driver included in the 5.13.0-19 kernel
contains a bug 16 that can result in filesystem corruption. Users of ZFS
are advised to wait until the first Stable Release Update of the kernel
in 21.10 before upgrading.

I know that this comment is not that useful to Ubuntu developers, but
I'm posting it for the benefit of those searching for this issue in
their favourite search engine.

Public bug reported:

I upgrade from Ubuntu 21.04 to Ubuntu 21.10, using the command: do-

[Bug 1878617] [NEW] Apple pages file type should be added to MIME types

2020-05-14 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

LibreOffice can open .pages files (from Apple pages). However, the mime
type for these files is incorrectly just application/zip:

$ file --mime-type example.pages
example.pages: application/zip

Instead, it should be application/vnd.apple.pages .

This would allow the user to associate LibreOffice Writer with these
types of files, and use it to open this file. (LibreOffice Writer can
open .pages files)

Apple Keynote files should have this MIME type:
application/vnd.apple.keynote

Apple Numbers files should have this MIME type:
application/vnd.apple.numbers

I also experienced this bug. I was running Ubuntu 18.04, and I upgraded

[Bug 1864500] Re: Commas in strange location when using Latin text

2020-02-24 Thread David D Lowe
I first discovered this issue when rendering text in the Scheherazade
font in Firefox. See this bug report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1614575

They said:

> Ah, I see ... it appears this is a bug in the font, but only in its
Graphite layout behavior. If you set gfx.font_rendering.graphite.enabled
to false in about:config, the problem disappears, as we then use the
OpenType layout tables. Chrome doesn't support Graphite rendering, so
the problem doesn't show up there.

> And the problem doesn't occur when using the font served by Google
Fonts (rather than a locally-installed copy) because Google serves a
copy of the font where the Graphite tables have been removed.

> Further confirmation: I see the same bad result if I use the font in
LibreOffice (which does support Graphite).

> So this is not a Firefox bug, it's a font bug; I'll let the SIL team
responsible for Scheherazade know about it. Meanwhile, as a workaround
you can disable Graphite in Firefox as mentioned above.

This confirms that the problem is in the Scheherazade font file shipped
with Ubuntu in the package fonts-sil-scheherazade.

[Bug 1864500] [NEW] Commas in strange location when using Latin text

they are rendered too high up. Also, the spacing after the comma is
missing. See the attached screenshot.

[Bug 1862660] [NEW] Give users more than 3 tries before being forced to wait for 60 seconds

2020-02-10 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

If you have full-disk encryption enabled, you are asked for your
password upon boot-up. If you enter the incorrect password three times,
you are forced to wait for 60 seconds before you can try again. You are
show this message:

cryptsetup: going to sleep for 60 seconds

Ubuntu is Linux for humans. Humans forget their passwords, and they need
more than three tries sometimes. If Ubuntu's keyboard layout is not the
one you are expecting, there is no indication of that (bug #1862656),
and it takes more than three tries to figure that out and then enter the
correct password. There is also no way to display the password (bug
#1862654), which also makes it likely that a user may need more than
three tries.

Please give the user more than three tries before forcing them to wait,
or at least reduce the wait time from 60 seconds to something shorter.

I am using Ubuntu 18.04.

[Bug 1862654] [NEW] Allow users to display the typed password on boot-up

2020-02-10 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

I had set up full-disk encryption using Ubuntu's installer. One day,
after rebooting, I could not get my new password accepted. I tried again
and again. Eventually, I realised that I was typing in the wrong
keyboard layout.

I have a feature request: please allow the user to display the password.
Maybe provide a keyboard shortcut like F1, with the message printed to
the screen: "press F1 to display the password field".

This would have saved me so much time and would have enabled me to
realise what the problem was much sooner.

Note that there is no way to verify what keyboard layout is active, as
whatever you type is hidden with asterisks. Even changing to another
virtual terminal does not let you display what you have typed. This
makes it even more important to allow the user to see what they had
typed in the password field if they want to.

Here you go.

$ nmblookup -M -- -

sudo apt install smbclient

I checked, and I'm still getting the same error message in Nautilus after
installing those packages.

I've done what you've asked. To be clear, the bug report is about
improving the error dialog, not about fixing the underlying problem,
which I guess could be another bug report.

[Bug 1646420] [NEW] Files (Nautilus) does not appear in Launcher or Alt-Tab

2016-12-01 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

When Nautilus is unpinned, it does not show up in the Launcher, even
when it is running. It does not show up the list displayed by alt-tab
either. Even when Nautilus is pinned, it does not indicate (with a tiny
arrow to the left of the icon) that it is running, and clicking on the
icon in the launcher doesn't switch to it.

This is regression from bug #1578792.

[Bug 1594104] [NEW] GNOME Music stuck at "The contents of your Music folder will appear here"

2016-06-19 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

When I open GNOME Music, I see this screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/L5NLiBR.png?1

It simply displays the message: "Hey DJ. The contents of your Music
folder will appear here."

To fix it, you have to enable tracker by running `tracker control -s`,
and then close the application and re-open.

What I expected to happen:

- The application should check whether Tracker is running, and tell me to turn
it on if it's not.
- The application should display some sort of animated progress indicator so
that I can tell that it's doing something.
- The application should not require a restart to see added music.

I'm not sure if Tracker is meant to be enabled by default in Ubuntu or
not, but either way, this bug still applies.

[Bug 1319397] Re: checkbox does not recover well from a suspend crash

2014-05-14 Thread David D Lowe
Thanks for your prompt response!

That's an interesting idea. It is not implemented right now. We have a
similar bug that explores this idea already
https://bugs.launchpad.net/plainbox/+bug/1232029

That bug report looks good. Is plainbox the backend for checkbox? I'm
unfamiliar with it.

We do that. You should have seen a prompt if you want to 'resume',
'continue' or 'restart' (those are quite confusing) did you see that
after restarting checkbox?

Yes, I did see that box. I clicked continue, as I deliberately wanted
to skip the suspend tests. It started a microphone test, if I recall
correctly, and then ran the suspend tests again, causing my computer to
crash. I'll upload a log later tonight if I get other things off my
plate first. The bug isn't that the dialog failed to appear, the bug is
that it failed to skip a test that had previously caused my computer to
crash, even though I chose continue instead of rerun last test.

I don't think we need to upload results before every dangerous test.
We try very hard to save everything on the filesystem before running
each job so that if it crashes you should still be safe.

Yes, but how do you know how many users never even try to run Checkbox
again? Just because the data is saved on disk doesn't mean it will get
uploaded. How do you know how many users give up before completing the
process? My intuition says that a significant proportion do. There's a
vast amount of UX materiel out there that examines form completion rates
on the web. On the web, this stuff is measured, and you would be
surprised how even tiny things put people off from completing a form.

My proposal is simply to start measuring this by uploading every result
as you go along, rather than assuming that the majority of users finish
the process.

Given that users are more likely to finish the process if nothing
crashes, the fact that data isn't being uploaded in increments means
that the received data is skewed towards test passes.

Thinking about, this really is two bugs in one report, so let me know if
I should file each one separately.

[Bug 1319397] [NEW] checkbox does not recover well from a suspend crash

2014-05-14 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Checkbox causes my machine to crash (solved only by a cold reboot). When
I start Checkbox again, it asks me if I want to rerun the last test, or
continue with the next. I selected continue, only to checkbox restart
before the suspend tests, and then crash once the suspend tests were run
again.

(It's worth noting, that suspend is indeed faulty, and causes my
computer to crash, but this bug is about Checkbox, not about the bug
with the suspend functionality.)

What I expected to happen:

- Before running the test, I expected some sort of prompt, that would allow me
to skip the test. Suspend/hibernate tests have a high likelyhood of failing, so
I think this should be required.
- Checkbox should save how far I got along in the tests more accurately.
- I'm not sure if this is the case or not, but the results should be uploaded
before I reach the final tests. I am now dead set against running Checkbox,
because I don't want to have to reboot my computer again. Ubuntu should be
collecting stats on this, on how many people do not finish the tests and why.

[Bug 1081219] Re: UI violates Ubuntu's unit policy

2014-04-16 Thread David D Lowe
It should conform to Ubuntu's policy, which specifies the meanings of
both the longhand and the shorthand.

Wherever gigabyte or GB is displayed, that should mean 10
bytes, wherever GiB or gibibyte is displayed, that should mean
1073741824 bytes.

[Bug 1168747] [NEW] Removing a user's password effectively locks them out of admin privileges

2013-04-13 Thread David D Lowe
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 882255 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882255

Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce this bug:

- Log in with a user who has admin privileges
- Open User Accounts from System Settings
- Click Unlock and authenticate yourself
- Click on the Password field.
- Set Action to Log in without a password
- Click on Change

(Same steps with screenshots can be found in this answer:
http://askubuntu.com/a/281093/2355 )

This successfully sets the user's password to empty. However, it does
not ensure that sudoers includes a NOPASSWD directive, so the user now
can longer use sudo, gksu, pkexec or PolicyKit to authenticate themself
to gain admin rights.

What I expected to happen:

This functionality should be disabled for users with admin rights, or
the sudoers file should be modified as appropriate, and PolicyKit made
to work for users without a password.

[Bug 1165413] [NEW] man page of `free` uses the term kilobytes when it means kibibytes

2013-04-06 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

However, it should say:

-k, --kilo
Display the amount of memory in kibibytes. This is the default.

[Bug 1083680] [NEW] lvm man pages are confusing when it comes to units

2012-11-27 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

The man page for lvextend gives these instructions for the -L option:

   -L, --size [+]LogicalVolumeSize[bBsSkKmMgGtTpPeE]
Extend or set the logical volume size in units of megabytes. A
size suffix of M for megabytes, G for gigabytes, T for terabytes, P
for petabytes or E for exabytes is optional. With the + sign the
value is added to the actual size of the logical volume and without
it, the value is taken as an absolute one.

By megabyte, does the man page mean 1024 * 1024 bytes, or does it
100 bytes?

Let's look at lvs's man page:

   --units hHbBsSkKmMgGtTpPeE
All sizes are output in these units: (h)uman-readable,
(b)ytes, (s)ectors, (k)ilobytes, (m)egabytes, (g)igabytes, (t)erabytes,
(p)etabytes, (e)xabytes. Capitalise to use multiples of 1000
(S.I.) instead of 1024. Can also specify custom units e.g. --units 3M

This is less confusing, but still so. Sure a lower-case b is a bit, and
an upper-case B is a byte? Surely k is a kibibyte, and K is a kilobyte?

[Bug 1081219] [NEW] UI violates Ubuntu's unit policy

2012-11-20 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

When creating a new logical volume in system-config-lvm, the user can
choose between the following units:

Extents, Gigabytes, Megabytes, Kilobytes.

By Gigabytes, system-config-lvm actually means gibibytes, and so on
for the other units.

This is a violation of Ubuntu's unit policy:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnitsPolicy

What I expected:

- Either 10 based units (such as GB) or 2 based units (such as GiB) to be used.
- The option of using Bytes, so I can specify the volume size precisely
without any ambiguity.

[Bug 443330] Re: USB Creator does not warn or ask user to confirm before formatting disks

This is a bug tracker, folks. Comments #29, #30, #31, #32, #33 and #34
don't belong here, they're just spam wasting valuable developer time.

[Bug 443330] Re: USB Creator does not warn or ask user to confirm before formatting disks

2012-10-09 Thread David D Lowe
Hello Joe. I really feel for you. Losing personal memories like that can
be heart-wrenching. There may be ways to recover your data, although
there are no guarantees (unless you have a back-up). If I were you, I
would seek help on any of the official or community support channels of
Ubuntu.

http://www.ubuntu.com/support

I would recommend ubuntuforums.org, askubuntu.com and the #ubuntu IRC
channel.

Since this bug has been fixed in the latest versions of USB Startup Disk
Creator, you're unlikely to find help in this bug tracker.

[Bug 1050419] [NEW] kipi-plugins-common packages .desktop files without corresponding executable files

2012-09-13 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

The kipi-plugins-common includes .desktop files, without including the
corresponding executable files. The corresponding executable files are
found in kipi-plugins. kipi-plugins-common does not depend on kipi-
plugins, which means useless .desktop files can be installed by the
user.

Steps to reproduce:

$ sudo apt-get install kipi-plugins-common
# ...
$ grep '^Exec' /usr/share/applications/kde4/photolayoutseditor.desktop
Exec=photolayoutseditor
$ photolayoutseditor
The program 'photolayoutseditor' is currently not installed. You can install
it by typing:
sudo apt-get install kipi-plugins
$ sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends kipi-plugins
# ...
$ photolayoutseditor
# works

kipi-plugins should include both the executables and the .desktop
files, and kipi-plugins-common should include neither.

An important sympton of this bug is in the Ubuntu Software Centre. If
you search for Photo Layouts Editor in the Ubuntu Software Centre and
install it, you will get a non-functioning icon in the launcher.

I don't know if fixing kipi-plugins-common and kipi-plugins will
automatically fix the catalogue in the Ubuntu Software Centre, so I'm
marking the Software Centre as affected.

[Bug 1027436] [NEW] Clicking cancel in the Create Ubuntu One account dialog freezes the Ubuntu One music store

2012-07-21 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce bug:

1. Open Rhythmbox.
2. Click on the Ubuntu One music store in the left pane.
3. Click the My downloads tab within the music's store's interface. A dialog,
entitled Create Ubuntu One account should appear.
4. Click Cancel.

The dialog will disappear, but the Ubuntu One music store pane will
still display this message:

Connecting you to the Ubuntu One Music Store...

After that, it is no longer possible to browse the Ubuntu One music
store. Consequently, any items in your basket are now lost. I expected
to still be able to browse the music store.

When rhythmbox first starts up, this text is printed to the terminal. I
don't think it is related to this bug but I am including it for
completeness:

[Bug 676981] Re: [MASTER] gwibber-accounts crashed with DBusException in call_blocking()

2011-11-27 Thread David D Lowe
My user automatically logs in. I am asked for my password after I log
in, presumably to unlock my keyring. This crash happened to me after I
failed to enter my password for at least half an hour, as I left my
computer after I logged in.

Could it be that Gwibber is waiting for the password to be entered, and
then timed out?

[Bug 879077] [NEW] sponge's man page should include a warning on how not to use it

2011-10-20 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Using bash redirection with sponge does not work as expected. For
example, this will make test_file empty:

sed 's/^/prefix/' test_file | sponge test_file

Instead, one should do this instead:

sed 's/^/prefix/' test_file | sponge test_file

I feel the man page should be updated to include this warning.

[Bug 268946] Re: gpg-encrypted files have no icon

2011-05-23 Thread David D Lowe
Here's what needs to be done:

An icon for application/pgp-encrypted mimetype needs to be created. None
of the icons found in /usr/share/pixmaps/seahorse/ are suitable, as none
of them represent an encrypted file. This icon should follow Tango icon
theme guidelines. It should be installed under /usr/share/icons/hicolor/
and shipped with seahorse's package.

The same icon needs to be created but following Humanity's style. It
should be installed under /usr/share/icons/Humanity and /usr/share/icons
/Humanity-Dark and shipped with humanity-icon-theme's package.

[Bug 755556] [NEW] Unity dash is inactive

2011-04-09 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Clicking the Ubuntu logo in the top-left corner of the screen opens a
blank dash (with just a simple text field and an empty area). Typing
something into the text field makes the typed characters appear, but has
no other effect. Pressing escape prints an unrecognizable character
(seen in screenshot), and pressing Enter simply appends a space.
Pressing Alt-F2 has no effect. The only way I could launch anything not
in the Launcher was to open /usr/bin in Nautilus.

I'm running Natty Beta1 from a USB stick.

Thanks for the bug report. You're right, it is a problem, but the
solution is a bit more difficult than just changing the script to
reading the current theme. The trouble is that thumbnails do not refresh

[Bug 346095] Re: notify-osd doesn't honor my preference

2010-11-27 Thread David D Lowe
I'm changing the title of this bug to:
Regression: bubble location setting from notification-daemon is not migrated

This reflects the original problem better.

The bug asking for the possibility to configure notify-osd's bubble
location has already been filed separately at as bug #420514 : Position
of notification bubbles could be configurable. This is the bug report
that many people who have commented on this bug report seem to be
affected by.

[Bug 244930] Re: gksu doesn't run terminal apps right

2010-10-26 Thread David D Lowe
While this bug doesn't affect me anymore, I was asking for a quote from
an authoritative source, not an opinion on what gksu should or should
not do.

To settle the difference of opinion, I've found the relevant text from the man
page:
gksu is a frontend to su and gksudo is a frontend to sudo. Their primary
purpose is to run graphical commands that need root without the need to run an
X terminal emulator and using su directly.

So Phillip Susi was right, this is not a bug but a feature request. Do
you know how I can submit feature requests to gksu?
