Yes this isn't by design, I believe it is a bug in Qt, reported at
https://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-21328
The only workaround I have so far is to disable the bounce effect. I
have played with the bounce distance and deceleration parameters to no
avail, but I might give it another go.

Case of Ubuntu inside a VM is not something we can easily fix, as we
need to globally listen for any Alt key presses. There's no easy way
around this.
The tap detection code does indeed take into account all other
keypresses. The HUD should only show if you press & release the Alt key
quickly, and

After some testing of this branch, it was found that a very minor visual change
was made by the fix. It was near impossible to distinguish with the human eye

Unity2D doesn't use those settings, they're Unity only. The Alt key is
hardcoded in unfortunately. This could be made a setting if enough people want
it. I advise opening a bug asking for the Alt key to be a dconf option, and
