For me, this problem started after upgrading to Gutsy, and it persists
in Hardy. All other scrolling (including message previews in
Thunderbird) is fast, but scolling the message list is slow, I'd say
less than 5 frames per second. I have tried both with the nv and the

found that s2disk also fails, I would say more than 50% of the time. I'm

updates this Monday; most notably xorg and xserver-xorg from version
1:7.1.1ubuntu6 to 1:7.1.1ubuntu6.2. It happened during the upgrade in

workaround is to switch terminals. Press ctrl+alt+f4 (for example) and
then switch back to the graphical terminal with ctrl+alt+f7.

Some more results of my troubleshooting:
The problem doesn't have to do with the restricted nVidia drivers. I
recently changed from the non-free (nvidia) driver to the free (nv)
driver, and the problem still appeared after a while.
What about you, Joachim, are you using the nVidia drivers as

Synaptic, and look at the installed version number there. However, I
doubt that this problem has to do with the driver version, after all. Do

I just noticed that I'm affected by the same problem. I also have a HP
pavilion laptop. As the OP said, removing and replacing the battery with
the power cord connected resets the battery type to the correct Li-Ion.

When I first plug in the modem (syslog_1), the GSM modem first claims
ttyUSB0 and then ttyUSB2. When I try to connect (syslog_2) modem-manager

backend for the compositor. I have tried switching from OpenGl 3 to
OpenGL 2, and that seems to fix the issue for me.
