[Bug 239317] Re: GST-Plugin Prevents use with Region 1 DVDs

2008-07-04 Thread Matthew Craig
Looking at 0.7.1-0ubuntu1 (-proposed), and the problem of the frozen
blue-screen is resolved.

I am seeing no obvious issues, after trying different Thoggen
configuration settings and different (non-CSS-encrypted only) Region 1
DVDs.

[Bug 239317] [NEW] GST-Plugin Prevents use with Region 1 DVDs

2008-06-11 Thread Matthew Craig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thoggen

The GST-Plugin contained within the Thoggen package (in the Hardy
repositories 0.7.0-1 version) makes the application non-functional with
Region 1 DVDs.

Reproduce this bug by selecting the DVD and tracks, configure the track
settings, then, on the Progress Screen, the application will hang
silently without error. The screen will remain a blue box, and the All
progress bar will remain at zero. I have chatted with the project lead,
Tim-Philipp, who says Sebastian Droege (MOTU Team) is working with him
to package the fix. I am creating this bug for Launchpad tracking
purposes.

Original Sourceforge.net bug can be seen here:

[Bug 164603] Re: gnash eats up ram

2008-02-09 Thread Matthew Craig
I installed GNASH for the first time since I left the above comment,
about a week ago. This bug must have been fixed, since that time,
because I have not seen the issue again. The memory usage has never
again raced and used all the memory, nor has GNASH started allocating
swap space. I consider this bug closed and marking it so.

[Bug 188758] [NEW] Update Speex package to 1.2 version

2008-02-03 Thread Matthew Craig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: speex

Due to new dependency from the upcoming Mumble package - and generally
increased stability - the Speex library and supporting applications
should be updated to the 1.2~beta3 version. Currently, Ubuntu is using
1.1.x, which is considered a developmental and a 1.0.x experimental
branch.

Two points were emphasized by the Speex developer:
(1) The library's new features are now broken out into a separate library
called 'libspeexdsp', and this needs to be in its own package, with dependency
on 'libspeex'. Two packages is recommended for systems that have extreme space
limitations where Speex is common (such as handhelds).
The header files for these two library packages need to be as follows:
(1a) 'speex_config_types.h.in' and 'speex_types.h' are required for both.
These can go in the 'libspeex' package as long as 'libspeexdsp' depends on it.
(1b) The header files associated only with the 'libspeexdsp' package are:
speex_buffer.h , speex_echo.h , speex_jitter.h , speex_preprocess.h ,
speex_resampler.h
(1c) The rest of the header files are associated only with the 'libspeex'
package.

(2) There are issues with the SONAME of Speex libraries, within the existing
Debian Experimental repository. To understand this, one must understand a bit
of Speex history. Speex is presently using the Linux version notation of 1.0
stable, 1.1 experimental and developmental, and 1.2 stable. Because 1.0 is old
and not recommended and 1.2 is beta and unstable, Debian and Ubuntu have been
using the 1.1 version and referring to the SONAME as 1.0 version.
Unfortunately, the Speex lead developer never intended 1.1 version to be API
compatible with 1.2, and, while 1.2 can share the same SONAME with 1.0 [*], 1.2
cannot share the SONAME with 1.1 version.
This puts conflicts with how the lead developer wants the SONAME used (continue
using 1.0 version notation) and how Debian wants the SONAME used (start using
2.0 version notation). It will be possible to use the 1.0 SONAME in Ubuntu,
because Ubuntu never adopted the Debian Experimental version.

[*] The lead developer of the Speex project has said the new version is
API compatible: 1.2 is a drop-in replacement for 1.0 -- jmspeex
#ubuntu-motu 2/1/8

[Bug 129081] Re: [needs-packaging] Mumble

2008-02-01 Thread Matthew Craig
ISSUE: There is mention in the documentation of Mumble that there is
Proprietary code within Mumble. Through an IRC discussion, it was
determined by Thorvald that there, in fact, was not Proprietary code
within Mumble. Perhaps this was a misuse of the word. Regardless, it
was also determined that this word must be removed from the
documentation, in order to be included within the Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 129081] Re: [needs-packaging] Mumble

2008-02-01 Thread Matthew Craig
ISSUE: The version of Speex libraries included with Ubuntu have
insufficient features to be used with Mumble. The newest version of
Speex 1.2~beta3 does have, for the most part, sufficient features. By
getting Speex 1.3~beta into the Debian Experimental repository, Mumble
can be packaged for Ubuntu without duplication of those libraries. This
will require updating the Experimental repository. It has already been
determined, through the same IRC discussion mentioned above, that the
new libraries should not break compatibilities with existing
applications with Speex dependencies, by Jean-Marc Valin - lead
developer of the Speex project.

ACTION REQUIRED: Update Debian Experimental repository with Speex
1.2~beta3. Sync Ubuntu repository with this upstream package.

Danny, Gotta agree with you that NVIDIA solved the problem with their
new driver version. I had been running NVIDIA's driver instead of the
Ubuntu Restricted driver (remember to lock your kernel version!), and,
yet, I was still having intermittent problems. 11 days ago, when I
saw your most recent message on this bug list, I tried the new
version. Since then, not seen the issue pop up again. Very happy
with the quality, but, now, we have got to get this into the Ubuntu
Restricted driver so everyone else can use it, too.

[Bug 164603] Re: gnash eats up ram

2007-12-02 Thread Matthew Craig
Yes, putting my 'Me, too!' here... Also on Gutsy [7.10] AMD64. It
doesn't take long before I was hitting web sites, with Firefox, that
would cause this problem. When it occurs, GNASH just starts chewing
through memory, allocating more and more. Once it allocates all the
real memory, Ubuntu starts swapping out virtual memory. When this
happens, the system slows to a crawl and the problem is hard to fix
because of the unresponsiveness. Ubuntu will start swapping more and
more memory back and forth between virtual and actual memory without
end.

This is a serious problem, and I caution against anyone installing
mozilla-plugin-gnash on AMD64 Ubuntu until it is resolved.

[Bug 162343] Intermittent Video Playback Issue in Gutsy with NVIDIA restricted driver

2007-11-12 Thread Matthew Craig
Public bug reported:

Intermittently, upon play back of videos, the player will show green and
scrambled graphics instead of the regular video. This is monitor
specific, with dual monitors, based on which monitor the video window
originates. Upon moving the video back and forth between the two
monitors, the video goes from good to bad to good again. Sometimes, one
monitor will show a still image of the video, while the other shows the
scrambled green. Sometimes, one monitor will consistently fail to show
a video, while the other monitor will consistently succeed in showing
the video. Sometimes, both monitors will consistently fail.

When the video player is dragged to a second monitor, the video freezes
or goes scrambled green. When the video is dragged back to the original
monitor, the video plays normally. The video can be between the two
screens and only the part of the video on the original monitor will
play.

I am using the new Gutsy (AMD64), with the Ubuntu-supplied restricted
NVIDIA driver 100.14.19, I configured my two Dell 2005WP / 2007WP
monitors with the Screen and Graphics tool, and I am having the problem
with both Totem, Xine, and Firefox embedded video. This happens with all
codecs, including OGG theora.

This problem only started occurring after upgrading to Gutsy.

I tried switching out gstreamer, codecs, and the totem player. None of
these made a difference. So, I have concluded it must be the new Ubuntu
NVIDIA driver, by process of elimination.

A work around is restarting the X display.

Someone else noted this same issue on the Forums:

[Bug 46996] Re: Hotplugged sound devices get sound card index of 0 instead of PCI card

2007-10-26 Thread Matthew Craig
Daniel, I have just finished fighting with this default ALSA card not
found issue for several days, and I came to Launchpad to file a bug
report, when I saw this one referenced.

I disagree with the approach of using asoundconf set-default-card
string because (a) the user is not given information what the string
should be, (b) the command does not error when the user has chosen the
wrong string, and (c) that asoundconf command is not universal - there
are still SDL applications that are unable to find a default card.

My work around that I wanted to share was:
(1) Get the card's module name with the command: cat /proc/asound/modules
(2) With sudo, edit the file: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
(3) Insert into the last line: options module name index=0
(4) Restart ALSA with: sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

I believe Ubuntu should handle these steps during installation, as this
is a painful process for new users to get basic sound functionality.

[Bug 156930] No sound on installation

2007-10-25 Thread Matthew Craig
Public bug reported:

On both Feisty and Gutsy, there was no sound on installation. The
problem is that the DCA channel in ALSAMIXER was set to zero. The first
time I saw this problem in Feisty, it took me a week to figure it out.
Most recently I saw it again in a clean Gutsy install, and it took me
8-9 hours to figure it out, because of course I forgot about my previous
experience. This may be working as designed, but it is incredibly
frustrating and I decided to file a bug report so others can reference
the fix (including myself when this happens to me again.)

A great first step in troubleshooting lack of sound is to open a
terminal window and type alsamixer. The ALSA tools might not know
your default card, and result in the following error, alsamixer:
function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device, but before
you go and try all the troubleshooting guides that recommend reloading
modules, try, alsamixer -c 0 or alsamixer -c 1.

You should be at a text-GUI (aka: curses) for alsamixer. Scroll through
each channel and set them all to 100% with the left, right, and up
arrows. Also unmute all channels with the space-bar key. You may need
to hit the tab key to get to other interfaces. Check the top-left of
the screen to make sure the card you are configuring is the one you
expect.

Now that all your channels are maxed, open the GNOME sound configuration
tool. (System - Preferences - Sound.) You do not need to close the
alsamixer or save the settings for them to take effect. Play with the
Sound Playback drop down choices and click the Test button. Some may
give you errors, and that's okay. Hopefully you will find a setting
that works.

Lastly, return to your alsamixer window, which should still be open.
While the tone is playing from the sound configuration tool, lower the
active channels half way or so, and lower the inactive channels even
more. At this time you may want to mute some channels (again with the
space bar) or set channels to zero. Do this while the sound is playing
so that you know you are not muting your primary sound again.

The Linux sound system can be confusing. There are GNOME sound levels
and ALSA sound levels. You have to be sure neither are muted in order
to get sound output. It doesn't help that some of the channels are
called things like DAC (which means Digital Analog Converter, by the
way). The problem - the bug - here is that Ubuntu installs with some of
these required channels set to zero or set to mute, and dozens of people
ask for help on this issue every day. Hope this information finds its
way to some of them.

I suggest this bug receive a higher priority. It is difficult to exit a

necessary to login a console (alt-f1) and kill the totem process.

I can reproduce this bug (repeatedly with the --fullscreen, and
occasionally without it), and I am running Feisty AMD64 with Ubuntu-

[Bug 95260] Re: Not enough free disk space

2007-10-23 Thread Matthew Craig
Had this same problem with the Feisty - Gutsy upgrade.

A Little Rant:
Update-manager should have determined there was insufficient space before
starting the download!! Before it did anything else!! Instead, the upgrade
critically failed mid-way through configuring all system files!!

Troubleshooting Details:
Used the Feisty LiveCD to run gparted and resize the /boot partition, but
update-manager left the OS in such a bad state that any kernel that I tried to
boot only arrived at a BusyBox prompt. Since grub seemed to be finding to
the /boot partition correctly, but the system was not working, my next step was
a complete re-install of Feisty and a new upgrade to Gutsy. This re-install
and clean upgrade ultimately worked, especially now that the /boot partition is
3x the size, but I lost all of my installed applications.

More thoughts:
I think the most important thing with this bug is that it could have been
prevented by checking for disk space pre-requisites. Seems like a prudent
task, especially as the kernel is being modified and the system is then being
rebooted, at the completion of the process.

[Bug 92811] Re: SDLJump hang-up when game start.

2007-09-19 Thread Matthew Craig
I can reproduce this bug with AMDx86_64 (2.6.20-15-generic).
The software will completely freeze either on start or when graphical options
are modified.
For one example, changing option OpenGL to On and clicking Back will
produce a freeze. This is reproducible.
The software can then only be terminated by kill -9. Closing the window has
no result, even after 30 minutes.

Point of Interest: This project was renamed a year ago to GNUjump (see:

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-04 Thread Matthew Craig
While it is true that performing the instructions for playing encrypted DVDs,
the Americans to who I'd recommend Ubuntu would be stopped with this first
caution:
In some countries it is possible that the use of some of the following
software to play or copy DVDs is not permitted by law. Verify that you are
within your rights in using it.

http://preview.tinyurl.com/2kakuk

As you can see with the above link, our government is very serious about
preventing circumvention of electronic data protection (DRM). News and
media outlets also are making sure citizens here know the importance of
not breaking the laws regarding electronic circumvention, so it is
becoming increasingly unlikely that average computer users here will be
willing to risk performing potentially illegal actions in order to use
their computer. (Regardless whether the two are morally, legally, or
technically equivalent, I think we can agree the console-mod busts may
prevent people from risking arrest, even if they misunderstand the
matter.)

I am curious what Canonical did for Dell's users, in the USA. Probably
pointed them to this same website? Meanwhile, unencrypted playback is
very much possible without fearing that precaution. But, the average
user is not going to know while of those steps needs to be skipped in
order to make the installation legal. That's why I think the
documentation should be updated. Ubuntu should have DVD playback, as
long as the user doesn't buy into any DRM protection rackets, which is
entirely possible although unlikely.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-03 Thread Matthew Craig
I suppose you mean by Ubuntu documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/musicvideophotos/C/video.html#video-dvd

The movie players provided with Ubuntu are capable of reading DVDs that
are not encrypted;

As can be seen from my comment that I needed to install Gxine to get
playback from not encrypted DVDs.

The documentation makes the reader believe that it is the encryption
that prevents the viewing, which may be true in most cases, but the
statement from the documentation appears to be false. This leads the
reader to assume there is some problem with their configuration, when
simply adding software capable of DVD playback is the only fix required.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-03 Thread Matthew Craig
After thinking about this issue, I feel the Ubuntu documentation should
be updated, even with a footnote or a hyperlink to further explanation.
Linux is all about using open and free software, and I think people who
want to watch an open, unencrypted DVD should be given the information
how to do it. I don't mean to spoil the meaning for the 95% of Ubuntu
users who want to watch their video rental, but I think it would be
keeping with the spirit of the Linux OS to have details on unencrypted
DVD playback.

Also, Phil,I don't know of any small unencrypted DVD images. I just
watch and redistribute DVDs which friends with Mac OS make for me. I
don't know how to make them myself. (Is that what Ubuntu Studio does?)
Regardless, Thank you very much for your response.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-02 Thread Matthew Craig
Thanks to Kaleo identifying the path to resolution above, I was able to see the
correct path, in enabling (unencrypted) DVD playback, is installing through
Synaptic Package Manager:
1) gxine
2) libxine1
3) libxine1-ffmpeg

Now, I can open gxine from the Ubuntu menu and play (unencrypted) DVDs
in Ubuntu. This work-around for a common problem was too hard to find,
in my opinion. I also think the xine workaround should be presented
as an option along side the DeCSS recommendations, in addition to
information on why their encrypted DVDs are limiting fair-use.

Thanks for providing this resource, and I hope gstreamer fixes this DVD-
playback problem soon.

There are more, but more than half of the keymappings that I tried displayed
nothing. I just wanted to give you an idea of what worked.

[Bug 82368] Re: Usb keyboard doesn't work at log on

2007-07-15 Thread Matthew Craig
I see this problem all the time. (AMD64 Feisty) This problem is 100%
repeatable for me. On every startup (from a cold shutdown), the
keyboard is unresponsive at the login prompt. My 100% reliable
workaround is unplugging the keyboard via USB cable, waiting 5 long
seconds, and reconnecting the USB cable. Always works after that and
never any issue after login.

I will attached dmesg and lsusb files.

(I have a mini keyboard which has a single USB port on board - which is
unused by me. Sorry, the manufacturer long since rubbed off. Also,
point of interest, I use an 2' extension USB cable, since the orginal
cable is only 2' or so long.)

[Bug 82368] Re: Usb keyboard doesn't work at log on

2007-07-15 Thread Matthew Craig
(Something else just occurred to me...)

The keyboard is not completely un-functional at the login screen. After
pressing enough keys, I can find some that work in displaying incorrect
characters to the login prompt window. Most do nothing, but some do
consistently output the wrong characters. I will try to write some of
them down the next time I see this issue.

(To emphasize: after disconnect, wait, and reconnect, the keyboard works
just fine.)
