[Bug 1452748] [NEW] Had to change Video Card to AMD to solve Video problem , but keep getting further updates for Nvidia card!

2015-05-07 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Before I updated to latest Ubuntu LTS previous version with Nvidia card worked
fine with the driver supplied.
Bur the new driver caused me endless crashes, so to rectify the problem I
fitted an AMD Card, as My PC has an AMD processor. ( I could also have used the
AMD onboard video but needed more ommff.)
I dual boot this PC with Windows 8.1 as I need to run windows software, I have
a Windows phone.
Its working great using your general video driver, but I keep being asked to
download and install the Nvidia 331 driver, then get a report a problem window
as obviously the new driver can not find a card!
I have tried to download an AMD driver, but am told no propriatory drivers are
available.

[Bug 1488719] Re: dmesg shows "[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!"

2015-11-23 Thread Paul
Had it happen today for the first time. Other than Ubuntu updates no
changes to the configuration in months so it seems to be a very recent
change. The last time I used the dual monitor config was 5 days ago,
with no troubles at all. Now the 2nd monitor (4k) goes blank and comes
back about every 5 seconds. Tried resetting display resolution (and
then back again) and may have helped for now.

Latest Dell XPS13 dev edition running Ubuntu 15.04.

[Bug 1580268] Re: Produce mplayer2 transitional package for upgrades

2016-06-02 Thread Paul
No correspondingly updated mplayer-dbg package has been released.
Therefore, after upgrading to mplayer-2:1.2.1-1ubuntu1, mplayer-dbg
(which obviously depends on an identical version of mplayer) can no
longer be installed.

Workaround: downgrade to mplayer-2:1.2.1

Correct, it turns out I upgraded mplayer while proposed was enabled,
then attempted to install mplayer-dbg at a later time with proposed
disabled.

Thanks for looking into that.

[Bug 1574382] Re: Default sound device changes after resuming system

2016-06-23 Thread paul
This may be a bug in Pulseaudio introduced in version 8 - at least it
was in my case. The issue is fixed in the newest release of Pulseaudio
(Automatic routing improvements) -
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Notes/9.0/.

*It did not appear in Ubuntu 14.04 (which uses version 4) and does appear in
16.10 (which uses version 8).
*I could fix it through brute force be making the *-default-sink file in
~/.config/pulse ro.
*I fixed it through the temporary fix as outlined in this post -
https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-bugs/2016-February/010460.html.
Please note that this may introduce other regressions. Read the entire post to
find out what. The regressions should not affect the vast majority of users.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 1542146] [NEW] Nautilus fails to preserve directory timestamp on move

2016-02-04 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Move a directory using mv and its mtime will be preserved. Move a
directory using Nautilus, and its mtime will be set to the time it was
moved. This is a bug.

Nautilus preserves mtime for file and directory copies as well as file
moves. Moveover, if the user attempts to move a directory that the user
does not have permission to delete (e.g. it is owned by another user), a
copy will be created with the correct mtime. This indicates that
Nautilus is taking an additional step that blats the mtime, but only on
moves, and only after they have already successfully created the
destination file.

[Bug 1548587] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 VMWare guest won't show UI after upgrading to 4.2.0-30

2016-02-23 Thread Paul
I've just installed the update on 5 VMs and none of them would boot.

I've interrupted boot (by holding the Shift key whilst powering on the
VM) to bring up the Grub menu (it took several attempts to get it),
selected "Advanced options for Ubuntu", highlighted the previous kernel
("Ubuntu, with Linux 4.2.0-27-generic"), and booted.

Once the system came back up I logged in and did:

apt-get --purge remove linux-image-4.2.0-30-generic linux-image-
extra-4.2.0-30-generic

My VM(s) will now reboot.

Looks like the new kernel is broke.

I'm running VMware Workstation Pro 12.1.0 build-3272444 on Windows 7
64-bit and my VMs are using open-vm-tools.

[Bug 1555389] Re: system reboots after acpi error

2016-03-12 Thread Paul
Hi Christopher,

Thanks for the prompt feedback. I was able to upgrade the bios but the
issue re-occurred 24 hours later.

As requested:

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2.05
01/04/2016

As far as I can tell there is no improvement, typically the problem
happens at least once every 24 hours.

Kind regards,
Paul

Thanks Christopher.
I'm going to test some new Crucial memory to rule that out - then will follow
your suggestion r.e. upstream kernel.
Memtest doesn't reveal any errors but my Corsair isn't on the supported list so
will test new Crucial memory for the next 48 hours to rule that out.

[Bug 1576565] [NEW] HDMI Sound drops out after screen blank/suspend (must use pacmd to reset0

screen blank, output switches to analog and HDMI is not an available

Hi (again)
Ubuntu is great, and free, so thanks very much!
But I think you have to agree that this issue persisting for 8 months is a bit
lame.

[Bug 1571138] [NEW] gnome-terminal resizes to entire desktop when un-maximised

2016-04-15 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Start a gnome-terminal (it should start windowed, 80x24), then maximise
it (by double clicking the title bar, clicking the maximise button,
etc.); its title bar disappears and it is now correctly maximised.

Now un-maximise the terminal (same way as before). It briefly flashes
down to its former size and position, then instantly resizes to take up
the entire desktop. So it looks like when it was maximised, except its
title bar is still visible.

Re-maximising and un-maximising from this state doesn't return the
previous dimensions; the gnome-terminal has forgotten its original size.

[Bug 1560797] Re: package systemd-sysv 225-1ubuntu9.1 failed to install/upgrade: libgcrypt20 was unconfigured during 15.10 to 16.04 upgrade

2016-04-15 Thread Paul
Quick fix solution if you hit this on an amd64 system before the patch
propagates:

dpkg --purge libcgmanager0:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libgcrypt20:i386
libnih-dbus1:i386 libsystemd0:i386

(Don't know why my system had i386 versions of these packages installed,
maybe they were automatically installed during the switch to systemd.)

[Bug 1488254] Re: clang++ no longer ABI-compatible with g++

2016-07-19 Thread the paul
I've made a first pass at adapting patches D17567 and D18035 to work
with your clang-3.8 packages. It builds and passes its own build-time
tests, and successfully builds and links a medium-size project we have
at work on 16.04, but I can't vouch for it much more than that.

I can see that this particular bug is attached to llvm-toolchain-3.6 and
not 3.8, but there doesn't seem to be a corresponding bug on 3.8, so
hopefully this isn't a bad place to mention it. Haven't tried patching
clang-3.6 yet.

** Patch added: "clang-3.8-abi_tag-ubuntu-changes.diff"

[Bug 1595580] Re: Upgrade to version 9.0 from June 2016

2016-07-13 Thread paul
I would like to see this changed from the wishlist as it contains a
fairly bad regression for users (like me) using HDMI sound. The full
discussion can be found here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93946. This issue has been
fixed in PulseAudio 9 - it is actually the first thing mentioned in the
v9 post above.]

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-07-16 Thread Paul
Same problem here, driving me crazy because it's unpredictable. Last
night I copied 500GB (movies 1-2 GB) from an old external HDD to a new
external external HDD. Finished the next morning without problems. Next
I wanted to copy 5GB and the transfer became slower until it came to a
halt. The system (Ubuntu 14.04) froze, I could't use the mouse/keyboard.
Had to reset my computer at the risk of damaging the disk. Luckily that
didn't happen. Tried a couple times but the system kept on freezing. Had
to use Windows to get the job done.

Possibly connected to this bug:

[Bug 1624715] Re: rpc.statd not started automatically

Neither do I, but part of the problem in that bug was the rpc.statd service
(and rpcbind) not working as well.
I found that bug because it was mentioned a number of times on the web as the
solution to the exact problem we have here.

[Bug 1264795] Re: Alt+Tab Switcher randomly activates itself

2016-08-28 Thread Paul
I've been doing some research after experiencing this issue, and
stumbled across this. It may be nothing but for me this only seems to
happen when my MacBook Pro is connected to the mains. When unplugged it
goes away, and also when keeping a finger touching the chassis whilst
using the touchpad, it also hasn't happened yet.

I didn't notice this under OSX so maybe there's some extra checks going
on behind the scenes there for contact patch size or reduced touchpad
sensitivity.

Steps whilst plugged in,
1, use laptop for a while
2, two fingers together on touchpad (not touching anything else), swipe slowly
and gently upwards to scroll the page
3, alt tab switcher opens, switches to next window, closes, instead of
scrolling upwards

Laptop unplugged or with a 3rd finger touching the metal body? Nothing
unexpected happens.

This was for a Ubuntu 16.10 hybrid USB build.

[Bug 1677442] [NEW] openvpn client breaks on connection loss

2017-03-29 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

openvpn version 2.3.11-1ubuntu2
Kubuntu 16.10, all latest packages

If while an openvpn connection is active, and said connection provides
the main internet access, if a short underlying connection loss occurs,
such as when used over wifi, the VPN connection will fail completely,
however remain active. What then ends up happening is the client will
attempt to re-connect but immediately fail as it's using the existing,
broken, VPN connection to connect to the server. The only way to resume
network connections to normal is to manually de-activate the openvpn
client via the network manager (ie; tell the active openVPN connection
to disconnect).

On an occurrence of a connection loss, the openVPN client should be able
to re-connect via the underlying connection, not via it's own
connection...

[Bug 1677442] Re: openvpn client breaks on connection loss

2017-03-31 Thread Paul
Does it work with URLs directly? if not then it definitely wont work as
the IP address can only ever be determined on connection initiation.

I'm yet to actually get routing to work properly, I had already tried
with a different VPN connection without success...

[Bug 1672099] Re: DNS loop, >5, 000 queries per second for minutes at a time

2017-03-21 Thread Paul
You're right, it turns out dnsmasq was only installed because I had
installed polipo, which depends on the dnsmasq package. Purging polipo
removes dnsmasq.

I have been running polipo (with config files unmodified from default)
for several years, including since fresh installing Ubuntu-Gnome 16.10.
Only since the upgrade to 17.04 two weeks ago has this problem emerged.
Presumably it will hit every user who installs polipo or dnsmasq in
17.04.

[Bug 1672099] Re: DNS loop, >5, 000 queries per second for minutes at a time

2017-03-14 Thread Paul
I just found that I can reproduce this loop state by reconnecting to my
Wi-Fi access point. The storm starts right after this line, 5 seconds
after the link comes up:

systemd-resolved[1188]: Server 127.0.0.1 does not support DNSSEC,
downgrading to non-DNSSEC mode.

The (much shorter this time) syslog extract is attached.

The only reference I can find to 127.0.0.53 in the settings (other than comment
lines) is in /run/resolvconf/interface/systemd-resolved:

nameserver 127.0.0.53

So I also don't know how dnsmasq gets that address unless it reads that
config file for some reason (no mention of it in source), derives it
from an incoming request, or gets it via D-Bus.

[Bug 1677442] Re: openvpn client breaks on connection loss

2017-04-05 Thread Paul
This is in seconds right? I don't want to be waiting an entire minute
for the connection to reset, if full packet loss occurs for more than 3
seconds than the connection would be broken and there'd be no point in
waiting any longer.

I will note though in this situation the ping shouldn't be any more than
50ms, I'm connecting to my local FTTH residence.

[Bug 1683122] [NEW] mouse input permanently locks to a single window

2017-04-16 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Once every few days or so, mouse/touchpad input in Gnome suddenly
breaks. The mouse cursor still moves around the screen as usual, but all
click events go to a random single window. Events such as clicks on
parts of the screen outside that window, or even on other workspaces,
are interpreted as events in that one window. Only the window content
receives events; decorations (and in the case of gnome-terminal, even
menus and scroll bars) do not.

Keyboard input in other windows continues to work fine, as does Alt+Tab
and Ctrl+Alt+arrows.

Bizarrely, touchscreen input works just fine. And if the touchscreen is
used to change to a different window, that window (or a nearby window)
may then become the single window selected for mouse input.

If the affected window is closed, another window is selected to receive
input in the same way. The only way to clear the problem is to log out
of Gnome.

[Bug 1683122] Re: mouse input permanently locks to a single window

2017-04-16 Thread Paul
Workaround:

rmmod usbhid ; sleep 1 ; modprobe usbhid

This clears the problem. Also tried rmmod hid_multitouch and psmouse,
neither of which seemed to do anything. I don't see how this could be a
kernel module problem, however. Seems more likely that removing the
module resets something in gnome-shell.

[Bug 1685564] [NEW] swapops.h bug causes soft lockup, takes down entire network stack

2017-04-22 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Unlocked the computer to find Thunderbird in an infinite loop and the
system barely usable, with no networking. ifconfig and netstat -r both
locked up without returning data. Apport would not complete until after
a reboot, so I collected some log output (attached).

At the time of the bug, Ubuntu had been running for about 15 hours since
the last software suspend.
