which do anything:

Running Natty under VirtualBox, the problem does not occur. I set the
time manually to a different date and time and then did the automatic
setting. It worked. However, the fact that I was running Natty in a
virtual environment might be relevant -- I don't know.

I've determined that the external microphone does work, so the problem
is only with the internal one. On much closer examination I determined
that the internal microphone is actually working but at a near-zero

With the latest version of alsabase (1.0.23+dfg-1ubuntu4), the behavior
of alsamixer is peculiar and surprising, but at least not unworkable:
(1) With IHP off, front controls the active output even if that output
is the HP. Unplugging and replugging the HP mutes it, but it can be
unmuted.

One other oddity I just discovered: with IHP on, muting either the HP or
the front has the effect of muting the front.

I should have mentioned that the troublesome updates have updated linux-
alsa-driver-modules (both server and generic). My current version is
2.6.35-22.201011021600. That module has been updated four times in the
last week (11/3, 11/1, 10/31, 10/30).

the installation process. I'm running a multi-boot system that includes

later kernel release solved that problem -- but now I still get sent

prevent hal from being reinstalled. That in itself is probably a bug,
since if you reinstall a package, the reinstallation shouldn't in any
case be disrupted by the previous version of that package.

I found the fix to this, thanks to another post that I cannot locate at
the moment. The file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf has contradictory
information. Removing the deny lines enables the hal installation to
work. The incorrect hal.conf file is a bug in its own right, but I
don't know how to

I just got the error exit 1 after attempting to reinstall hal. No other
configuration problems I'm aware of right now. (Kubuntu 8.04).
