I have same problem.
Asus Maximus Formula motherboard with Asus PCI-Express soundcard
(analogue devices ADI1988). Clean Ubuntu 10.10 install.

in a VM to check, but I'm installing a new hard
drive in the machine that contains all my VMs and since I'm a belt
suspenders kind of guy, I use the -cc option to mkfs, so creating 500
MB partitions takes almost 40 hours each. I expect that it'll be about a
week before I can report back.

I just installed a Delta-44 using the ICE1712 ALSA driver in my machine
running Lucid. I had to use the fix in comment #2 to get audio out of my
sound card. It would be nice to see this fix included in the distro.

Update on progress I have recently made in overcoming this problem. I can now
boot up to the GUI desktop!
How did I achieve this? I decided to remove the hardware driver, NVIDIA
accelerated graphics driver (version current) which I had inherited from
10.04.1 when I upgraded to 10.10. I was then

Booting with quiet splash deleted the messages move too quickly up the screen
for me to read. When they stop I do not know how to copy and save what is on
the screen. I thought all the files produced by apport and attached to the
report would provide this information.

I have re loaded 10.04 a few times (for various reasons) and in the
past two months ? and have only had one extra sound icon . Problem
seems to have vanished . I am still running all the same things
(compiz etc.) as before .
