I've found the cause of the problem. It was due to mysql not having
permissions to the appropriate directories in AppArmor. Changing them
fixed it.
Question: why did MySQL run before the update without the permissions?!?

I have the same problem with a Compaq Presario 1800T on Hardy. (I've had
the same problem with this laptop since Feisty; it worked fine with

I have both Firefox 3 and Firefox 2 installed (since some websites I use
don't work on FF 3). Flash plugin is installed for Firefox 2, but not
for 3.

With both versions of Firefox installed, they use the same profile,
which causes problems w.r.t. plugins: some plugins work in FF 2, others
in FF 3, while the rest are disabled (e.g. flash-nonfree works in FF2,
but NoScvript works in FF3)

With respect to Bug 209348, the upgrade should copy the profile to a new
one, so that one can simultaneously use both versions of Firefox without
quirks of one version affecting the other.

Were you using the nvidia driver? I recently observed a similar soft
lock. The stack trace appears to come from the nvidia kernel module.
Possibly related also to compiz. I have Intel CoreDuo in Dell D820
laptop.
