I did some testing, and it appears it *is* a kernel bug after all, as
this happens when using Kubuntu or when manually running pmi from the
command line. Also, I reloaded my system with the -12 kernel (from

My bad - I spoke too soon. Even though I got some errors from g-p-m in
the process, the root problem remains with the kernel. I've reverted my
kernel to the -12 kernel included on the Gutsy beta CD and it works
fine, though I would like to see this fixed in a SRU for the current
Gutsy kernel.
Also of not - sometimes I can wake my system when frozen in this state
by closing the lid, waiting a few seconds, connecting/disconnecting the
power cord, and then pressing the power dutton. However, this only
revives the system about half of the time.

In Gutsy, when using VMware Fusion with the autodetected settings and
the vmware driver, the resolution used by default is significantly

I'm somewhat busy currently and don't have access to my Linux install, but I
will point out something that I think is related to the issue - the fact
that my system has a widescreen display. I have a feeling that the code to
do the splash screen on Gutsy is somehow messed up in the way it handles
I should note that the i810 driver doesn't have this problem, so if your
card supports it you can use this and avoid the crashes. You do need
915resolution, though...
Devs: If this problem doesn't get fixed for final, could the default driver
be set to i810(+915resolution included) for cards
I just installed it, and will keep you updated as to whether the problem
comes back or disappears...

I very much doubt upstream will have anything before Gutsy release.
Could we integrate my patch or possibly a similar one with some minor
changes? It wouldn't be very good IMO to have the brightness randomly
increasing in Gutsy final as it does now...

I have figured out that the current font problem is limited to Compiz,
so adding that as a package which this bug occurs in and re-closing the
bug in xorg-server...

Please look at this as it related to Compiz... I have huge title bar
fonts after starting X with Compiz enabled (with Compiz disabled, it's
fine...).
